Chapter 467: Chapter 18 Helen, You Can’t! (4.7k)
In the courtyard, the atmosphere fell into a deep silence.
Atalanta looked at Luo En, her brow furrowed in worry, and quickly began to explain.
“Teacher, I just want to know who my parents are, where I come from. I definitely don’t mean to distance myself from you! I always keep in mind the care you and the great Artemis have shown me!”
“I know.”
Luo En nodded and cast a reassuring glance at Atalanta.
On an island in Ancient Greece, one day, as the sun set, the sage Socrates stared into the vast sea and sky, posing three questions: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going?
Once asked, these questions became the ultimate philosophical propositions, continually testing human wisdom and discussing human existence.
Because at a certain time in life, nearly everyone considers similar questions, exploring the meaning of their own existence.
Clearly, Atalanta had reached that age.
In this matter, Luo En could of course understand and was not angered by it. In fact, what he was pondering was a different question.
“If I tell you the answer, what will you do when you meet them?”
“I want to know why they abandoned me?”
Atalanta replied without hesitation, her expression earnest.
Luo En sighed and softly spoke the truth.
“Because your father wanted a son to inherit his family business, and you were born a girl. So, to him, you were without value.”
Upon hearing this, Atalanta’s face paled, and she inadvertently bit her lip hard enough to draw blood.
Leaving a newborn baby in a deserted forest would obviously lead to dire consequences.
If it weren’t for her teacher and the great Artemis happening to be hunting in the Arcadian Mountains, she likely would have become nothing more than a smudge under a centaur’s hoof, or food in the mouth of a magic beast…
Atalanta clenched her teeth and asked in a heavy tone.
“Who is he? I want to see him!”
“And then what?”
Luo En repeated his question, his deep gaze scrutinizing his student.
“Accept him, submit to him, despise him, or kill him?”
Hearing these soul-striking inquiries, Atalanta became dazed, standing silently in place.
Indeed, even if she could recognize her father, she did not know what attitude or approach to take towards the blood relative who had abandoned her.
Seeing Atalanta’s distraught demeanor, Luo En could not help but shake his head and sigh.
The daughter was a good daughter, but the father might not necessarily be a good father.
Before, they had met with Iasus, King of Arcadia, who was the unworthy father Luo En spoke of for abandoning his daughter Atalanta in a rage because she was not a son.
Moreover, in order not to see this daughter, who he deemed a disgrace, he even specifically ordered his servants to abandon the newly born Atalanta in the remote Arcadian Mountains, clearly intending to let his shame die off in the deserted wilderness.
What was even colder to consider was that after Atalanta grew up and showcased her exceptional hunting skills at Calydon, this King of Arcadia took the initiative to acknowledge her and deceitfully brought Atalanta back to the Royal Palace.
What awaited Atalanta next was not the doting affection of a guilt-ridden father, but one forced marriage after another.
Since a daughter could not inherit the throne directly, the plan was to marry her off to a man who could produce a grandson.
—This was the true intention of that King of Arcadia.
All along, he held not a sliver of remorse for abandoning his daughter.
Under her father’s persistent persuasions, Atalanta eventually softened and agreed to set up a contest to choose a suitor.
But as a follower of Artemis, who had vowed to remain chaste, her decision was equivalent to betrayal in the eyes of the original Goddess of the Hunt.
Thus, she lost Artemis’ protection and soon fell under the influence of Love God Aphrodite’s authority, marrying a lesser-known suitor—Hippomenes.
In the end, as Hippomenes was cursed for forgetting to make a sacrifice to Aphrodite, Atalanta too was implicated, accidentally committing a sacrilege and transformed into a lion to serve the gods by pulling their chariots.@@novelbin@@
After going over Atalanta’s life experiences in his mind, Luo En spoke with a heavy heart.
“Think it through well. Once you have it figured out, I can still tell you the answer later.”
As Atalanta came out of her daze and heard the concern in his words, she nodded slightly, then filled with confusion and contemplation, she returned to her bedroom.
Indeed, she needed to carefully consider how to confront the father who had abandoned her.
Watching his student Atalanta’s somewhat desolate figure, and recalling his junior Medea’s tragic life, Luo En felt an immense headache.
Sigh, one after another, none of them makes it easy for me.
After muttering to himself, Luo En raised his hand to gather the fragments of a crystal ball scattered in the pond into his palm, planning to take them back to his bedroom to study the implications of the recent divination.
After all, as a goddess of roads, Hecate held some expertise in divination.
If he could decipher the meaning of the omen, it might provide some guidance for the upcoming mission to quell the Beast Disaster.
Soon, Luo En erased the traces in the yard, entered his bedroom with a bag of crystal ball fragments.
