The Hidden Dragon In-Law

Chapter 37 – Can't take the loss

Paul Wang couldn't contain his excitement upon hearing this.

His car was a 540, while James Ye's was a 520. No matter how hard James tried, he couldn't possibly win.

James actually dared to bet so big with him!

If they set off thirty thousand firecrackers inside the car, it would be ruined. The interior, seats, and control panel would be completely destroyed.

Since James was courting death himself, Paul saw it as a perfect opportunity to humiliate him!

Without hesitation, Paul nodded and shouted, "Everyone bear witness! James and I will race to see whose car is faster. The loser has to set off these firecrackers inside their car!"

He added, "Anyone who backs out or cheats, may their whole family die!"

Several male classmates started jeering, and those upstairs, upon hearing the commotion, rushed out to watch. Around twenty or thirty people gathered at the entrance, eager for the show.

Everyone thought James was an idiot. How could a 520 compete with a 540? This was a straight road; the winner depended more on the car's performance than the driver's skill.

Even if Schumacher were driving the 520, he couldn't beat the 540!

It seemed James's brand-new BMW 520 was about to be declared a total loss!

Mary Xiao kept trying to dissuade James, saying, "James, don't let him provoke you. He's doing it on purpose. Let's not compete with him."

James smiled slightly, "Don't worry, honey. Your husband will never lose."

Paul laughed heartily, "James, I have to admire your courage! Since that's the case, let's cut the chatter and get straight to the race!"

"Alright," James nodded, "How do you want to race?"

Paul pointed to the intersection at the end of the road, "We'll start at the same time, race to that intersection, make a U-turn, and come back. Whoever returns first wins. How about it?"

James smiled, "No problem!"

"Great!" Paul said excitedly, "Everyone bear witness, we're starting the race right now!"

With that, he got into his BMW 540 and drove onto the main road.

Ignoring Mary's attempts to stop him, James drove his car next to Paul's, aligning the fronts of their cars.

A mischievous male student laughed, "I'll do the countdown for you!"

"Great!" Paul laughed, "Start when you're ready!"

James nodded and switched his BMW 760 to sport mode.

The BMW 760 had a 6.6-liter engine with 585 horsepower.

Meanwhile, the BMW 540 had a 3.0-liter engine with 340 horsepower.

The difference in engine size and power was immense!

But Paul had no idea that James's 520 was actually a top-tier 760. He thought he had the race in the bag.

The student responsible for the countdown shouted excitedly, "Ready! 3, 2, 1!"

As soon as the words left his mouth, Paul floored the gas pedal!

He knew James was destined to lose, but he wanted to make James's defeat even more humiliating!

However, to his surprise, a black shadow shot out from his right side, instantly leaving him far behind!

It was James's BMW 520!

Paul could hardly believe his eyes!

Damn it!

How was this possible?

It couldn't be!

James's 520 only had 184 horsepower, while his car had 340 horsepower, nearly double! How could James so easily overtake him?!

The onlookers were also stunned!

No one expected James, who everyone thought would definitely lose, to shoot out like an arrow and instantly leave Paul far behind!

Before Paul even reached the halfway point, James had already made the U-turn at the intersection!

As Paul was about to make the U-turn, James had already driven back to the starting point!

James won!

And he won with an overwhelming advantage!

Paul had just made the U-turn when he saw James already at the finish line, and he was nearly in despair!

What the hell was going on?!

How could a BMW 520 outperform a BMW 540 by such a margin?

No way! That bastard must have modified his car!

Damn it! Using a modified car to trick me? Damn it!

He gritted his teeth and drove back to the crowd, where James was already celebrating with Mary.

The surrounding classmates were all dumbfounded, still unable to understand why James's 520 was so fast!

Paul stopped his car, got out angrily, and roared, "Damn it, James! You used a modified car to trick me, didn't you? This race doesn't count! A modified car has way more power than mine, how is that fair?"

James sneered, "Hey, Paul, you were the one who said power didn't matter, that it was all about skill and courage. Now that you've lost, you're trying to back out?"

"I am not!" Paul showed a flash of panic, trying to argue, "You tricked me, it's not me backing out!"@@novelbin@@

Linda Dong scoffed, "Paul, you're really disgusting. Don't forget the oath you swore earlier: whoever doesn't honor the bet, may their whole family die!"

"Exactly!" Many classmates who were initially waiting to see James make a fool of himself were now displeased with Paul. It was clear he couldn't take a loss. He had started this whole thing, and now he didn't dare to honor it.

Someone spoke up, "Paul, this is really disappointing. Everyone witnessed you challenging James and saying power didn't matter, and that you'd honor the bet no matter what. Now you're backing out, are you really willing to let your whole family die just to avoid the bet?"

"Yeah!" A girl chimed in, "Paul, we all thought you were a man of your word, but it turns out you're just a petty person who goes back on his word!"

Someone else added, "Now I see what kind of person Paul really is! He's just a double standards dog! If James had lost, Paul wouldn't have let him off easily! Now that he's lost, he's acting all shameless. What trash!"

Paul's face turned red and white with anger.

To be honest, he had just bought this car less than a month ago, spending over seventy thousand dollars.

If he really set off the thirty thousand firecrackers inside, the car would be ruined!

This was his beloved car! He wouldn't even tolerate a small scratch or speck of dust on it, how could he bear to set off firecrackers inside?

But with so many classmates watching, he had clearly lost their respect. If he continued to back out, none of them would want to associate with him in the future.

They might even spread rumors about how he lost a bet and didn't honor it, despite swearing on his family's life.

Thinking about this, he wavered.

If he didn't set off the firecrackers, his reputation would be ruined!

At this moment, James suddenly spoke, "Paul, we're all classmates, just having some fun. If you can't bear to set off the firecrackers, then don't."

Paul instantly breathed a sigh of relief.

But the surrounding classmates immediately started murmuring, "Wow! James is really magnanimous. Look at Paul, how embarrassing!"

"Exactly! James saw that Paul couldn't take the loss and gave him a way out!"

Paul's pride suddenly exploded, and he cursed, "Who the hell said I can't take the loss? Where are the firecrackers? Give them to me! If I can bet, I can lose!"

James's lips curled into a sly smile...
