Chapter 741: Ruby's Warning
The Incubus System Chapter 731. Ruby's Warning
Interrupting our conversation, Celia, appeared by my side. She held out a steaming mug of warm coffee, the fragrant vapor rising from its surface. The rich aroma wafted towards me.
"Here you go, brother," Celia chirped. She extended the mug towards me.
"Thanks." I reached out and accepted the mug from Celia, feeling the warmth. The fragrant aroma of the coffee intensified as I brought the rim of the mug closer to my lips.
I raised the mug to my mouth and took a careful sip, allowing the smooth, robust flavor spread across my tongue. The caffeine coursed through my veins.
"Even though she didn't mean to hurt you, she could end up hurting you. So you have to be careful," Ruby continued with a serious expression. Her eyes held a hint of concern.
I let out an exasperated sigh. I knew she was only looking out for me, but I couldn't help but feel irritated.
"Okay," I replied, my tone laced with indifference. I wanted this conversation to be over quickly.
Ruby's forehead creased with worry. "Ethan, I'm serious," she stressed, her voice tinged with urgency.
"I'm also serious, Ruby," I reiterated, my voice tinged with a hint of annoyance. I took another sip of my coffee. "And I already said I'd be careful. What do you expect from me? Do you want me to scream in panic or something?" I couldn't help but let out a dry chuckle at the absurdity.Ruby's gaze faltered, her brows furrowing in contemplation.
"Thought so…" I said again with a huff.
"Ethan, it's not about panicking or making a scene. It's about understanding the situations. There are forces at play that even we don't fully comprehend," she explained earnestly.
"Mind explaining what you mean by 'forces'?" I prodded. I knew she couldn't openly disclose it.
Ruby's lips formed a tight line, her expression betraying a mix of frustration and caution. She hesitated for a moment. Finally, she spoke in a hushed tone, as if afraid someone might overhear.
"There are powerful people, the ones who pull the strings behind the scenes," she said, her voice carrying a heavy tone. "They manipulate things to fit their own agendas, and most people don't even realize it. They're the kind of people who could use you as just a pawn in their game."
"Right," I muttered and took another sip of my coffee. I was quite surprised that she went as far as explain it to me. Although only the outline.
Ruby's eyes bore into mine. She leaned forward. "I know this may sound like nonsense to you, Ethan. But I'm seriously worried about you," she emphasized, her tone pleading. "I'm trying to warn you. Why are you acting so indifferent?" she complained, her eyes locked on me, showing she was serious.
My nonchalant expression morphed into a serious one as I locked eyes with Ruby. "Then I will ask you one more time. Should I scream in panic? Or should I just pack up and leave this place, like I did last time?" I retorted, hoping to elicit some common sense from her.
Her eyes widened, and for a second, it was like something clicked. She suddenly seemed to realize the possible consequences of her warning.
A mix of worry and regret crossed her face. She opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out.
Leaning back in the chair, I let out a frustrated sigh. "You know, if I have to disappear again, if this place becomes too dangerous for me to stay, then maybe it's time to consider starting anew somewhere else," I huffed. I took another sip of my coffee. Of course, that was just my babble. But yeah, if I was still human and didn't know what was going on, I would do that without a doubt.
For a few moments, Ruby sat there in silence, her brows furrowed in deep thought. I could almost see the wheels turning in her mind as she grappled with my words. It was evident that she was at a loss for a suitable response.
But then, as if a switch had been flipped within her. The sadness that clouded her gaze gave way to a newfound determination. She straightened her posture.
"You're right," she suddenly muttered, her voice filled with conviction. "We should face this calmly, head-on."
