Chapter 1444: The Wandering Zombie
Despite its current state, mangled, the dragon snake wasn’t dead.
Rex wasn’t familiar with the Voidal Monsters and how these creatures operate.
He wanted to purchase the information about them but it cost him three million gold for the information—a price he couldn’t pay for the moment. However, killing Voidal Monsters gave him gold so he would have more than enough very soon.
Until then, he has no choice but to be perceptive.
The pink snake earlier that was neutralized by the Golden Waxing Talisman was a separate entity.
It was the dragon snake’s tongue.
Rex betted on that to make sure that the dragon snake was really inactive.
Of course, the System already confirmed that but seeing the power the dragon snake commanded from earlier—it was instinct for him to be cautious. Had it attacked, he would have no choice but to instantly use the Invincible II item, wasting his trump card.
"Go inside the Life Vein first," Rex mumbled, eyes fixed on the carcass ahead. "I’ve something to do"
"No, I’m coming," Linthia shook her head.
Upon hearing this, Rex turned towards her—rather surprised.
Linthia was always meek and never talked back so her response caught him off guard.
His look usually made Linthia feel small and intimidated but this time, she fought the urge to buckle.
"I know what you’re trying to do. Do it, don’t mind me. I can handle it," She continued—her tone firm, resolute in her decision. "You already warned me of what I should expect so don’t mind me. I also, as one of the captains, wanted to know who I’m serving and accept everything about you, including your bad side"
Rex smiled inwardly before walking ahead, "Suit yourself…"
Once the battle between the woman and the dragon snake receded, the Black Rift returned to normal.
Gradually, the black wind swept across the barren land and enshrouded the area in darkness again.
But the momentary clearance allowed Rex to know where the carcass was and also where the woman and her group were. Since the dragon snake wasn’t dead—that woman should remained around the area to make sure that it didn’t endanger the others.

Rex wasn’t that dull to not realize that woman was Davina, Duke Lorcan’s daughter.
He remembered what Andreas said that she was helping the Ravencort House.
So that woman from earlier was certainly Davina.
I need to be quick.
Cutting through the darkness, Rex reached the carcass.
Even though he knew that the dragon snake was massive, seeing it up close still surprised him.
I think it’s almost as big as Dravitar.
"Keep your distance," Rex instructed, glancing over his shoulder to look at Linthia.
Upon hearing this, Linthia nodded and stepped back.,
Once she made her distance, Rex reached his hesitant hand to touch the dragon snake’s body.
<Scanning…>
<Time until revival: 6 minutes and 33 seconds>
"Six minutes…" Rex nodded, that was plenty of time for him to take a good portion.
Without hesitation as time was clocking down on him, Rex acted on the resolve he’d forged long before entering the Spirit Realm. He went over to the torn part of the dragon snake’s scales—that exposed its flesh as he plunged into the gaping wound.
His maw stretched wide, teeth sinking deep into the creature’s flesh.
Pulling savagely, he ripped free a chunk of meat—tendons snapping and blood spraying in a red arc.
As soon as the meat touched his tongue, it was an explosion of flavor.
A symphony of sensations unlike anything he’d experienced in the Mortal Realm—the meat was tender yet firm, succulent, with a zesty tang that danced on his taste buds. The blood, rich and sweet, cascaded over the flesh like a divine sauce, enhancing the flavor of every bite.
It was moist, almost buttery, with a pleasant pungent aroma that filled his nostrils.
Even though he barely did something like this, he noticed one thing.
Being a Werewolf brought along an odd constitution, one that made the taste of raw meat—way better than cooked meat. On top of that, the stronger the entity to whom the meat belonged, the tastier it will become.
A primal push from their bloodline, to make all of them aspire to become stronger and stronger.
So that they could kill stronger and stronger enemies and devour them all.
Rex didn’t pause to savor it fully—the taste was too intoxicating, too primal.
Devouring raw meat like this felt right for some reason.
Perhaps it was because he was still in his Werewolf form but regardless of the reason, this felt right.
Gulp!
He swallowed the first mouthful in a gulp, already tearing into another bit—his hunger insatiable.
It was hard to hold back.

Despite the notifications pouring in and drowning his vision, Rex kept going.
Each piece was a revelation, a feast that fueled not only his body but also his spirit.
As he ate more and more, he began to realize that he was meant for this.
No more hiding his Werewolf identity—no more discrediting the Werewolf path as animalistic.
In order to be stronger and protect the others, it didn’t matter what needed to be done.
Even if his Werewolf status became more prominent than his Human side, he didn’t care.
No… it’s not that he didn’t care but he must not care.
Power has no emotions, the world is impartial and his enemies have no empathy.
Going full-on Werewolf side for the sake of power would sacrifice his sanity.
It’s a big decision—that would impact him in the future and perhaps might even put him in a deeper hole of madness. But keeping his sanity at the cost of slowing his strength progress was not an option, Rex can’t have that.
Sure, madness degrades—but when the mind is breaking and the world crumbling, there’s no choice.
Only the insane stood tall.
Sanity won’t allow me to purchase the way to where I need to be.
Madness is the only currency that buys the future I want, and that’s a price I’m willing to pay.
Rex kept repeating those words inside his mind as he kept on devouring.
On the other hand, Linthia watched the ordeal from behind but there was no disgust or disappointment in her eyes—only melancholy. Every bite he took and drop of blood he slurped—she knew that he was doing everything for the sake of others.
’It’s the way he is… and I will gladly accept and stand by him’ She resolutely thought inside.
Several days passed.
Rex and Linthia focused on taking care of missions from the Void Hub and growing stronger.
Due to his inexhaustible stamina as a Werewolf who doesn’t need sleep, getting his rest from eating and devouring the carcasses of Voidal Monsters instead, Rex could keep going without a pause. He visited the Void Hub so frequently that the Walkers there began to recognize him and gave him a nickname.
The Wandering Zombie.
It stemmed from the fact he always came back drenched with blood.
A mixture of his blood and also the Voidal Monsters he killed.
Not to mention, the way he was walking was not balanced—and slow, almost as if his mind was under the water, not fully at the moment. He never talked with others and his eyes were barely alive as he dragged the proof of his successful missions.
One day, it could be a big sack of severed arms or body parts.
Another, he was dragging severed heads.
Other than his dirty and zombie-like appearance, there was also another part the onlookers noticed.
Without fail, Linthia has always accompanied him.
Unlike Rex’s appearance, she was pristine and clean other than slightly sweating.
Because of their first mission—that introduced them to the Voidal Metamorphosis, Rex asked Amanir about it as soon as he came back. Amanir explained that those who were blessed as Seekers could create a Seeker Flare which was basically armor against the Black Rift.
Even though Amanir rarely dwells in the Black Rift, he knew a couple of Seeker Flare techniques.
A Seeker Flare technique is extremely minuscule in number.
Normally, powerful or mid-level houses or factions have one that was passed down—as a heirloom or even obtained from an inheritance from their ancestors. Fortunately, as a thief, a Seeker Flare technique was one of the items he usually stole as it fetched a high price.
One of them was the Diamond Flare, which was a royal Seeker Technique.
Linthia learned it and helped Rex sustain the Black Rift using it.
Since she doesn’t have unlimited stamina like Rex, she usually comes to accompany him only to aid him with her Seeker Flare. Other times, she fought alongside Rex—and when she was tired, she became an observer.
However, she always accompanied Rex without fail.
It was the only reason Rex could go at it non-stop, without turning into a Voidal Monster.
And at the third day, he finally managed to reach High Spirit 5 in all of his Soul Artifacts.
Additionally, all of them were 1% away—from breaking through to the Ascendant Spirit rank.
Currently, Rex stood inside the Void Hub, facing a bulletin board.
People were covering their noses when they walked past him—the stench of dried blood was pungent enough to stab their noses—but Rex didn’t care. His eyes were fixed on a mission parchment pinned there, one that he had been aiming for.
Voidal Pawns are the only Voidal Monsters I and Linthia could kill.
Some were even too strong for us to kill still.
All of them only yielded White Nightfall Stars. I tried killing the stronger ones but it’s still the same.
Not that there were a lot of Ascendant Spirit rank Voidal Monsters around here.
It’s clear that to get a Yellow Nightfall Star, I need to kill a Voidal Knight.
However, jumping to fight a Voidal Knight like that Giga Skull Crusher would still be too hard for me. The gap in strength between Voidal Pawns and Voidal Knights is massive. The weakest Voidal Knight was at the Immortal Spirit rank.
Once I reached Ascendant Spirit 5, I should be able to beat Voidal Knights comfortably.
But how long would that take?
I’ve been going at it non-stop, gathering Nightfall Stars and it still took me three days.
Rex shook his head and frowned in worry.
His rank growth was too slow but his level was growing fast, he was now sitting at level 36.
From reaching level 20 and level 30, he obtained useful rewards.
However, to make use of them, he needed to reach the Ascendant Spirit rank first.
Going up the ranks would gradually be harder—this is too slow… I need to be faster, way faster.
Rex needed to reach the Divine Spirit rank, which was still four big ranks above him.
It was akin to reaching the ninth-rank realm from a fourth-rank realm in the Mortal World.
In the Mortal World, he has the resources to speed through the ranks but in the Spirit Realm, all of the resources are held by the Voidal Monsters. If he wanted some—he needed to fight them—on their own turf where he was in a very disadvantageous position.
However, in his defense, he hadn’t used the absorption tickets he obtained as rewards.
He was waiting, hoping for perhaps one Yellow Nightfall Star from the Voidal Pawns he killed. But that was wishful thinking, he could not get one no matter how many Voidal Monsters he killed. So, rather than hoping, he decided to take a risk.
"Is it time for us to take that mission?" Linthia asked from behind.
Upon hearing this, Rex turned to her slightly, "Yes, once I broke through. Are you also close?"
"I’m ready to break through from two days ago," She nodded in affirmation.
She only has one Soul Artifact and it wasn’t a high grade like Rex’s Soul Artifacts so she reached the edge faster than Rex. Now that he was also on the verge of breaking through, it was time to reach the Ascendant Spirit rank.
"Let’s go meet Amanir, he should be able to guide us," Rex said firmly, heading for the exit.
Once he broke through, he would take on that mission.@@novelbin@@
