Chapter 1506: Tower Mechanisms
As soon as Rex returned to the others, Crimoria quickly approached him.
"How did it go?"
She asked, feeling relieved that nothing happened to Rex while he was negotiating inside and curious.
"Grant accepted, we got his permission to proceed. Just wait for a bit until he comes out. We should get our own place, and we'll do our planning there. Also—you stay and tell the people that we're attacking the tower without their help. It would help ease them a lot knowing that." Rex answered as he headed to the carriage.
He intended to ponder the planning before it started.
But this plastered a frown on Crimoria's face, "We're doing it alone…? Without their help?"
"Yes, that's the only way we could proceed." Rex answered and got on the carriage.
Even so, Crimoria was still not convinced.
She could still force the Mahkam Ruin to fight, there was no need for them to take this massive risk.
"Lord Rex, think about it again, the tower is at least twenty floors high—and each floor was akin to a small village. For all we know, there might be ten thousand or even a hundred thousand Voidal Monsters in there!" Crimoria argued, this was beginning to look like a suicide mission.
Despite having her and also Viora, there's no way they could take out that much.
Not when the Singing Lady is around.
She would certainly not let the Voidal Monsters of the tower be slaughtered completely.
At some point, she would deter Crimoria and also the strong people among them.
"The plan can change. The key is to adapt," Rex replied as he sat down. "For now, we will proceed as if we are alone. That way, we'll be pressured to be more meticulous in our planning—and perhaps, we could really take down the tower ourselves."
Crimoria wanted to say more, but Rex had already closed the door in her face.
She could only muffle her frustrated scream as this would be incredibly hard.
In fact, she might even die attempting to take down this tower.
However, remembering the Echo Rex she had given her, she could only swallow it all back and calm herself.
'Even though it's hard, it's not impossible. Let's just see how it goes…' She sighed and turned around.
As instructed, Crimoria informed the people of Rex's decision.
Not one of them is required to help.
All the people needed to do was protect their own border, in case some Voidal Monsters slipped through.
It created quite an uproar—the people were shocked by this decision.
"We… We don't need to participate?"
"Doesn't that mean they are going to fight the tower alone? When they're a few hundred strong?"
"Is that even possible? Isn't that more like suicide?"
"Regardless, isn't this a good thing? There's a chance the tower is taken down without any risk for us!"
"A chance…? Like this will be anything other than a disaster."
Almost instantly, the atmosphere turned depressed once again.
Recalling how they felt about the three previous raids, they remembered that chances are, this time—it would end the same—as those three raids. Nothing would change. The Forsaken Tower would decimate the entire forces, and their hellish lives would continue.
"We still have to protect our border…"
"It shouldn't be a problem. Even without them trying, we would still be doing that."
Crimoria looked at them and shook her head.
Not a sliver of hope could be seen, the people were already too scarred to even hope for the best.
"At least, without these people—the soldiers' morale would not be affected. As long as we are focused, we should have a good chance of clearing this." Crimoria glanced back at the main carriage. "But that would depend on how good his planning and strength really were."
Moments later, Rex and the others were inside a cube.
It was their place for whatever they needed to do until the Forsaken Tower's attack commenced.
Most of the key people, along with five additional soldiers, were gathered inside, standing around a round table. None of them spoke a word, and the atmosphere was very tense. Currently, they were waiting for the scouts to come back from scouting the Forsaken Tower.
Rex was staring at the wall vacantly.
He was carefully strategizing and meticulously considering the best approach for the impending attack.
As for the others, they were rubbing their sweaty palms as the tension crackled in the air.
Everyone knew the situation, and frankly, not everyone was on board.
Attacking the Forsaken Tower without the Mahkan Ruin's people's help sounded a lot like suicide.
But fortunately, Rex's display of strength helped a lot in keeping the situation in order.
Had it not been for that, the soldiers and the heirs might've ditched him already.
"Are we really doing this? Is this really going to work out well?" Taylan held his head in a panic.
He wasn't sure whether this was a good idea.
Riko tapped on his back assuringly, "We should trust Lord Rex, he knew what he was doing."
Despite saying that, Riko's face still betrayed a sense of worry.
"I wanted to say that I'm feeling fine, but I don't," Hannah suddenly joined and sighed.
She was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, her gaze fixed elsewhere, on Linthia, who stood beside Rex with unwavering composure. She didn't even seem the least bit concerned. If anything, she carried herself as if this were just another ordinary day.
Death might be waiting for them hours from now, and she treated it like it was nothing.
"The probability of failure is high, and most of the people here could die," Hannah continued, her voice tightening with every word. "Unlike us, who have protection trinkets that could save our lives, they… she has nothing. So how can she be so calm?"
"Maybe she already accepted her fate?" Taylan answered.
But this was immediately rebuked by April, "No. She trusts Lord Rex that much, that's why."
Despite being short-lived, the time she spent talking with Rex showed clearly that he was extremely reliable. He only thought of protecting others—it was never about him. Perhaps that's the reason why Linthia was so calm.
She knew that Rex was going to look out for her.
"If that's the case, what did she see him do to make her that trusting…?" Hannah mumbled.
Having that much faith in someone was extremely hard to achieve.
Rex must've done something incredibly hard for Linthia to be that trusting of him.
Just then, the rune above the entrance flickered.
Crimoria opened the mechanical door and saw that it was the scout, he had already come back.
Stepping inside, the scout saluted the people inside out of respect.
"I'm here to report what we've found." He said sternly.
Rex nodded his head and gestured with his hand, "Go on, tell us what you found."
Once he got the permission, the scout awkwardly scanned the room. All eyes were on him. He hesitated before finally moving to the center and explained what he found. As many of them probably knew, the Forsaken Tower was comprised of one way in and one way out from the bottom floor.
However, there were windows across the tower's length.
It doesn't erase the chance that Voidal Monsters might use them as a way to go in and out.
From that, each floor wasn't entirely separate—Voidal Monsters could crowd onto one floor.
Surrounding the main tower were three other smaller towers.
Naturally, the scout asked around—and based on the people, these towers were some sort of protection for the main tower. It would fire powerful beams that could disintegrate a person—even those who are at the Master Immortal Spirit rank, as well as summon a lot of Voidal Monsters.
Hounds mostly, the people called them Pale Howlers.
Right from the get-go, there should be thousands of these Pale Howlers that would come out.
During the day, the towers were basically docile.
Normally, the people would enter the ruin during the day when these three towers were inactive.
No beams and no Pale Howlers, but all of that changed when the night came.
A while back, hundreds of years ago, this wasn't the case, but somehow, the pattern changed.
For the first five floors, the Voidal Monsters were relatively weak, and they were roaming about without any fixed purpose. Anyone could take care of them, but one still needs to be careful not to pull all of the attention, as there were quite a lot of them.
More importantly, the upper floors didn't seem to be disturbed.
No matter how loud they were.
Alas, most of the warriors stopped at the fourth floor, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of backlash for being too loud. So as long as one could handle the attention of the monsters, then they could do anything they wanted.
No intervention from the upper floors.
"Do we know anything about the upper floors other than the Singing Lady?"
Crimoria intervened on the explanation as she leaned forward and placed both hands on the table.
Handling the upper floors is all that matters, and she wanted to know more.
Hearing this, the scout shook his head.
"It's not that the upper floors are uncharted—but it was that nobody survived to tell what lies beyond," The scout answered grimly. "In all three previous raids, the teams made it about halfway up before all got wiped out. We can be certain of that since the onlookers witnessed the chaos from the outside before they fell."
Once again, silence enveloped the entire room.
It was helpless once again.
Not only would they need to deal with the protective towers, but they also didn't know what to expect from the upper floors. Even the first task seemed impossible, and defeating the main tower seemed to be as impossible or perhaps even more impossible.
"Fortunately, our detection trinket showed that the voidal energy concentration coming from the tower was more—or less as expected. No matter what lies beyond the fifth floor, the strongest entity in there should be the Singing Lady still." The scout added, giving one piece of good news.
Even though it wasn't much, it was liberating to hear.
"Though it was weird that there were considerable traces of life energy in the tower." He added.
"Anything else?" Crimoria asked grimly—both her hands were already at her waist.
"Ah…" The scout thought for a second before he nodded. "We can also hear distant singing. It would grow louder the closer we approached the tower, but it wasn't loud enough to be disturbing. It's certainly coming from the Singing Lady."
Once the scout finished his report, all eyes turned to Rex, who was still standing calmly.
Unlike the people inside, there was barely any change in his expression throughout the report.
He took in the new information and processed it effectively.
Rex remained silent for a few seconds before finally stepping forward and laying out his instructions.
"Dame Crimoria, go with the scouts and make a second inspection of the tower. Mark the radius of the three towers and investigate the singing. I want your input about it," Rex looked at Crimoria—and said without a pause, as if he knew what to do clearly.
"As you wish." Crimoria nodded.
Then, Rex turned to the heirs, "All four of you will bring several able soldiers and capture a couple of strong Voidal Knights in the area. Make sure there was at least one that could fly among them, and don't hurt them too much."
"Capture?" Taylan spoke up questioningly. "Capture Voidal Knights?"
"Yes, is there a problem?" Rex raised an eyebrow.
Then, before Taylan could speak, April stepped forward, "No problem, Lord Rex. We can do it."
"Good." Rex nodded firmly.
He needed everyone to be serious about this.
Following that, Rex turned to look at the five soldiers, the stronger ones among the army, "Five of you should prepare the others and station them on the border. Be ready to attack the Forsaken Tower at once."
"Yes, Lord Rex!"
All of them pounded their chests and saluted in unison.
Finally, Rex looked at Viora, "Can I ask you to talk with the people and find out more about the tower?"
"Of course," Viora smiled assuringly. "I'm sure they would be more open to talking to me."
As soon as all got their instructions, Rex nodded and prepared to leave.
"What about you? Where are you going?" Viora asked.
Rex headed for the door and answered, "I'm going to have a talk with Grant, it won't take long."
What do you think?
