Chapter 339: 183 pulling out the big guns
The Gu Family’s graveyard is located on a geomantic treasure land to the south of Capital City. It is said that the family’s ultimate ancestor became wealthy in the vicinity, and after they did so, they purchased some land to build tombs for the Gu Family.
The Gu Family’s true noble status began with the old Marquis’s generation and was hereditary for three generations before it started to decline. In short, Gu Changqing will be the last Marquis of the Marquis Residence, and if he does not accomplish significant achievements, his son will become an Earl, his grandson a Viscount, his great-grandson a Baron, and by the time of his great-great-grandson, they would become commoners again.
Of course, in Zhan Country, there are also hundreds of years old flaunting clans like the Duke Residence and the Zhuang family, with a constant stream of talented individuals and stable positions.
Madame Yao got up very early, wearing a plain white robe with a Gui Zhi belt around her waist and a small apricot bib-front jacket. She had no gold or silver jewelry, only two white jade hairpins.
A maid brought a rouge box.
Madame Yao waved her hand: “No need for makeup.”
She was going to pay respects at the gravesite, not visiting friends.
“Yes.” The maid reluctantly carried the rouge box away.
“The sky looks cloudy. I’m afraid it’s going to snow again.” The head maid came in from outside, rubbing her frozen hands, “My lady, you’re too thinly dressed. Put on your cloak.”
“Hmm.” Madame Yao nodded, then dressed in a white satin cloak.
No faults could be found in her attire.
The head maid was ultimately afraid that she would come down with a cold, so she prepared a few extra hand warmers for her use.
When Madame Yao, with a rabbit fur hand warmer, arrived at the front door, the three Gu brothers also came over from their respective courtyards.
Gu Changqing’s expression remained unchanged.
However, the faces of Gu Chengfeng and Gu Chenglin did not look too good.
Gu Chenglin glanced at Madame Yao coldly, grunted, and said: “My aunt really! Why did she let her come? Can’t we worship our mother ourselves?”
Gu Changqing looked at him solemnly: “Get in the carriage.”
Gu Chenglin complained, “I didn’t say anything wrong! It was her who caused Mother’s death! How dare she visit Mother’s grave!”
Gu Chengfeng also thought so, only he didn’t want his younger brother to be punished by his elder brother again while he was here.
He plucked at his brother’s sleeve, “That’s enough, get in the carriage first. It will be late if we go later, and the road might be difficult to travel if it snows.”
“Humph!” Gu Chenglin glared at Madame Yao and got into the carriage in resentment.
Gu Chengfeng joined him in the same carriage.
Gu Changqing was on horseback.
Madame Yao and the head maid got into another carriage, and there were two more carriages carrying the offerings for the late Madame Ling.
“Why must you suffer this injustice?” The head maid lamented as she helped Madame Yao onto a stool.
“It’s nothing.” Said Madame Yao.
She had long grown accustomed to these words, at first they would hurt and fill her with resentment, but now she was numb to them.
The late Madame was not killed by her.
She is clear of heart.
More than two hours later, the party arrived at Dongyue Village. The graveyard was in the woods behind the village.
The three brothers got off the carriage.
Madame Yao also got off the vehicle, instructing the people to unload the offerings for Madame Ling. She intended to go to the grave and offer a stick of incense to Madame Ling.
Gu Chenglin stepped forward to block her path, “I don’t allow you to worship my mother! You’re not worthy!”
Madame Yao finally understood, the late Madame Ling had summoned her here to humiliate her through her stepson.
Madame Yao calmly said, “I promised the old lady that I would offer a stick of incense to the late Madame.”
“Go away!”@@novelbin@@
Gu Chenglin stretched out his hand to shove Madame Yao, Gu Changqing swiftly stepped forward, gripping his brother’s wrist, “Do you intend to make a fuss in front of Mother’s grave?”
Gu Chenglin angrily withdrew his hand.
Madame Yao handed the incense, candles and joss paper to Gu Changqing, “Then I won’t go. Please convey my sentiment.”
Gu Changqing took what she handed over, “Madame, wait for us in the carriage, it’s windy outside.”
Madame Yao gave him a strange look, he seemed to be caring for her. Had he become well-behaved now that he was at his mother’s grave?
Without uttering a word, Madame Yao turned and walked towards the carriage.
“She shouldn’t have been allowed to come!” grumbled Gu Chenglin.
“Hold your tongue!” Gu Chengfeng said.
The Marquis Residence hired locals to guard the Gu Family’s ancestral graves. Each tomb was swept very clean.
The three brothers paid homage to Madame Ling and their grandparents. Then, as was customary, they went to visit the village.
The ancestors of the Gu Family were not from Dongyue Village, but they had benefited from the local villagers. Over the years, thanks to the villagers’ caretaking, the Gu Family’s ancestral graves were well protected.
Madame Yao distributed the gifts she had brought in the carriage to the villagers one by one.
What do you think?
