Chapter 30 - 30 30 A Wonderful Night
Chapter 30: Chapter 30: A Wonderful Night Chapter 30: Chapter 30: A Wonderful Night Lu Jingqiu paused, then responded, “Yes, I have a job offer back home, and I’m still considering it. If I make up my mind, I might really not come back.”
Li Yinger was surprised and quickly encouraged, “If you have a job offer, you should take it right away. What’s there to consider?”
Lu Jingqiu smiled but didn’t answer. Quickly, she changed the subject, “When did Gao Shu and Xia Lin get married?”
Li Yinger said, “Last week.” At this point, Li Yinger muttered under her breath, “Being her bridesmaid was such a plight. If it weren’t for Li Qing watching over me, I think I would have fallen out with Xia Lin.”
Lu Jingqiu paused, “What happened?”
Li Yinger said, “It was just too chaotic here, especially that good-for-nothing from the village, completely shameless.”
Lu Jingqiu asked, “Zhuang Yan?”
Lu Jingqiu was just about to ask more when she saw Zhang Shuo come back from outside.
The two of them fell silent by an unspoken agreement. Dinner was mushroom soup with shredded pork noodles, and after it was made, the fragrance filled the yard, enticing even their mother, who had a poor appetite, to eat a big bowl.
She was supposed to accompany her father to Village Chief Xia’s house after dinner to discuss her leave of absence, but her father didn’t ask her to go.
He had Gao Shu, who had just come over, accompany him instead.
Lu Jingqiu didn’t know what her father and the village chief talked about, but after staying at the Xia Family’s house for over an hour, they returned with her father wearing a relaxed smile, which suggested that nothing unpleasant had happened.
“Dad, the village chief didn’t say anything, did he?”
Lu Xianrun patted his daughter’s head and smiled, “What could he say? I told him that I might be accepted by a unit in the future and no longer involved in building Ten-miles Village, and he was quite pleased about it.”
Lu Jingqiu laughed, “When I was in the village, I would occasionally argue with his daughter over a man. He naturally wouldn’t want to see that. Now that this troublesome spirit is leaving, they can breathe easy.”
Lu Xianrun nodded, “I think Gao Shu is quite well-received at their house.”
Lu Jingqiu snorted softly, “You all say Gao Shu is a good person. If he became our son-in-law, you would surely be just like Village Chief Xia. Dad, don’t you think it’s a pity?”
Lu Xianrun shook his head, “The young man is good, but there are many good people out there, and only one suitable for my Qiuqiu. Obviously, he is not the one. I’m relieved you’re keeping your distance from him now.”
“Dad, I understand all the principles you and mom taught me since I was young.”
Lu Xianrun nodded, but he didn’t take this moment to lecture his daughter on important life lessons, as it was getting late. He went to the town with Zhou Lanping, while Lu Jingqiu stayed behind, squeezing in with Yun Yuzhi and Li Yinger.
After the gates of the Educated Youth Spot were closed, Lu Jingqiu took out the items she had prepared for the two of them, “Here, one for each of you. I found them at the Xinhua Bookstore, and there are two sets of textbooks for you to share and read when you have time.”
Yun Yuzhi looked at the workbook, eyes brimming with excitement, and said with a smile, “The day before yesterday, Brother Shen Mu also brought high school textbooks for Shen Mu, and even Gao Shu has started studying. Although he hasn’t said anything, I think they’re going to resume the college entrance exam, aren’t they? Jingqiu, do you have any news?”
Lu Jingqiu smiled and did not answer directly but just instructed, “After the busy farming season, when you’re not busy, make sure to read those books. I wouldn’t be setting you up.”
Li Yinger also took out her own books. Compared to the new ones, she preferred to keep hers because they had important notes from her teachers, “Let’s give the new books to the guys. I had my family mail me my books recently, but I’ll keep the workbook. Jingqiu, thanks. This must have cost quite a bit of money, we can’t let you pay for it all.”
Yun Yuzhi agreed, “Right, right, we’ll pay you for them.”
Lu Jingqiu shook her head, “You guys still don’t know my temperament, I’m definitely not taking the money, it was meant to be a gift for you guys. My parents have been here these last few days, and it’s been a hassle for you all.”
Yun Yuzhi smiled, “Why the courtesy? Your uncle and aunt bringing meat over already made us feel quite embarrassed, you know we don’t get to eat pork often in a year.”
Li Yinger put her book away and lay on her side with a sigh, “Ah, Xia Lin still hasn’t returned my book to me. I’ll go ask for it back in the next couple of days.”
As Lu Jingqiu lay down too, Yun Yuzhi whispered, “Yumin saw her heading to the Old Shed a while ago, to see those people. An old university professor lives over there.”
“For high school problems?” Li Yinger asked.
Yun Yuzhi hummed in affirmation, then paused, “Do you think Xia Lin knows about the possibility of the college entrance examination being reinstated?”
Li Yinger laughed, “How would she know… It might have been the old teacher from the Old Shed who said it, his relatives come to visit him often.”
Lu Jingqiu didn’t care about the people at the Old Shed; they had left eventually. But there indeed was an old professor, and she felt some things had changed, especially regarding Xia Lin, “Oh right, what did you say about the hooligan earlier in the afternoon?”
“That day, the hooligan was getting handsy with the bridesmaid, and with Xia Lin too,” Li Yinger explained, “The bridesmaid, being from the same village and having a lot of family members, he didn’t dare do much; but he was pulling at me, trying to hug me. Luckily, Li Qing pulled me out. Only Xia Lin and the hooligan were left in the bridal room, along with a few other young guys. I don’t know what happened inside exactly, but I heard Xia Lin hit the hooligan. I guess, the hooligan was trying to take advantage of Xia Lin. The granddaughter of Grandma Sanhua from the village said she saw him pestering Xia Lin several times.”
“I knew the hooligan was interested in Xia Lin from a long time ago,” Yun Yuzhi said, “but he didn’t dare to do anything with Village Chief Xia around.”
“Ah, you knew?” Li Yinger said.
Yun Yuzhi burst into a laugh, “I arrived here earlier than all of you. Back then, Xia Lin was fourteen or fifteen, and Zhuang Yan seventeen or eighteen, he pursued Xia Lin. I had just arrived when I heard all the gossip. Eventually, it was Xia Lin’s brother who gave Zhuang Yan a good beating. He didn’t dare anymore, sigh, and just like that, four or five years have flown by.”
Lu Jingqiu took Yun Yuzhi’s wrist in her hand, comforting her, “Sister Yuzhi, as long as you study well during this period, you’ll soon get out of your current situation.”
Yun Yuzhi laughed, “If studying can help me escape from this labor, I would study like my life depended on it.”
Li Yinger, who was sitting next to them, couldn’t help but laugh at this remark.
Lu Jingqiu joined in the laughter. In her previous life, a few of them indeed got into universities, although the school Yuzhi got into wasn’t very prestigious. Zhang Yumin had good results, but to be with Yun Yuzhi, he gave up a better university to attend the same one as her and later seemed to have been assigned to an agricultural bureau in a prefecture-level city.
Li Yinger and Li Qing both went to Normal University and became teachers, even Zhang Shuo, who only got into a junior college, was smart and eventually started his own business, becoming quite successful.
No matter how you looked at it, everyone had a promising future. Knowing her friends’ futures in advance made Lu Jingqiu quite happy, but this joy was something she could only digest herself, she couldn’t speak about it carelessly.
Thinking of this, she chuckled to herself again, “Oh yes, I brought a camera with me this time, and a few rolls of film. Let’s take a group photo at the Educated Youth Community tomorrow.”
“Really? Could you take one of me?” Yun Yuzhi asked. “I haven’t had a photo taken in years.”
“Me too,” said Li Yinger.
“If there’s enough film, I’ll take an individual one for each of you,” Lu Jingqiu replied.
“That’s great.”
Meanwhile, the men in the next room, hearing their bell-like laughter, also curled their lips upwards in the darkness.
…
What do you think?
