Chapter 8 – Lobbyist
After bidding farewell to the grateful parents and declining their gifts, the two returned to Yuan Wuxing's small courtyard.
"I noticed you're quite talkative with me, but why did you clam up in the hall? Maybe City Lord Zeng didn't even notice you."
Yuan Wuxing scratched his head and chuckled, "I was nervous. I've never been in such a situation before, and my mind went blank."
Jiang Li chuckled, "You, spending ten years investigating the colossal Jiang family, knowing the chances are slim yet persisting, if anyone says you lack determination, they're blind. But you get timid at crucial moments, like today with the Jiang family, in the hall, and when you tried to break through to the Nascent Soul stage. Our Taoist sect emphasizes the dual cultivation of life and nature, but you're only cultivating nature, not life."
Yuan Wuxing felt as if struck by lightning.
Indeed, as Jiang Li said, he was always hesitant when trying to break through to the Nascent Soul stage, his thoughts chaotic like a tidal wave. He thought, "I'm still young, why risk my life for a breakthrough? Why not enjoy a carefree century before attempting it? What's the use of breaking through to the Nascent Soul stage? There's still the Divine Transformation stage beyond that. When will cultivation ever end? So many have failed to break through to the Nascent Soul stage, why would I succeed?" This led to several near-breakthroughs, all ending in failure.
"Thank you for your guidance, Senior," Yuan Wuxing bowed respectfully to Jiang Li, who merely smiled without saying anything.

Yuan Wuxing suddenly remembered something and anxiously asked, "Senior Zhang, I suspect the Jiang family will send someone to that space to destroy evidence. We must stop them!"
"I'm afraid they won't go to that space; otherwise, how can we make a big deal out of it?" Jiang Li signaled Yuan Wuxing to calm down but didn't explain further. Yuan Wuxing believed Jiang Li's words and calmed down.
Even though they had only spent a day together, Yuan Wuxing began to trust Jiang Li without reason.
"Are Mr. Zhang Li and Mr. Yuan Wuxing here?" A light knocking sounded at the door.
The knocking was gentle, and after speaking, there was no response from inside, so the person outside didn't knock again, simply standing respectfully at the door, showing great politeness.@@novelbin@@
Yuan Wuxing opened the door, his hand trembling uncontrollably, but he restrained himself from striking.
"I know I have wronged the world. If beating me can ease Mr. Yuan Wuxing's hatred, I have no objections."
Clan Leader Jiang stood at the door, leaning on a cane, his eyelids drooping with an apologetic look. He faced a peak Golden Elixir stage and a peak Nascent Soul stage enemy with only his Golden Elixir stage cultivation, without any followers.
How could Yuan Wuxing not hate Clan Leader Jiang? If Jiang Yixing was the main culprit, then Clan Leader Jiang was his greatest accomplice. The deaths of those infants could definitely be attributed to Clan Leader Jiang.
"What are you here for, to threaten us?"
Yuan Wuxing ultimately didn't strike, merely giving a sarcastic smile and sitting down heavily in a chair, drinking tea in large gulps.
He dared not act rashly, not knowing what tricks this old fellow might have, avoiding complications if possible.
Unexpectedly, after entering, Clan Leader Jiang threw his cane aside and knelt directly on the ground, startling Yuan Wuxing so much that he nearly dropped his teacup.
Jiang Li watched Clan Leader Jiang with interest, curious to see what tricks this junior might pull.
"Though the ancestors were wrong, no mistake is greater than that of the People's Emperor. If the matter of the People's Emperor cultivating demonic arts spreads across the Nine Provinces, what will people think? It will inevitably cause resentment, and if someone fans the flames, how much will it impact the People's Emperor's reputation!"
"Outside the Nine Provinces, extraterritorial demons are eyeing us covetously. Fortunately, successive People's Emperors have raised the banner of the Nine Provinces, fighting against the demons, sparing the Nine Provinces from disaster. The People's Emperor's power lies in faith. If the faith of the people in the People's Emperor is shaken, Jiang People's Emperor's strength will surely decline, posing a great danger to the Nine Provinces!"
"I know you two are concerned for the world and are righteous men. My Jiang family may be villains in secret, but we stand united against the demons. I implore you to consider the billions of lives in the Nine Provinces and let this matter go. I thank you both in advance!"
With that, Clan Leader Jiang kowtowed three times, the dull thuds echoing, leaving blood marks on his forehead. When he rose and looked up, his face was covered in tears.
Yuan Wuxing was moved by Clan Leader Jiang's sincere words and actions, unconsciously thinking maybe they should let this go. It wouldn't be good if it truly affected the People's Emperor.
After all, even if the People's Emperor practiced demonic arts, it was for fighting the demons and for the people of the world.
Yuan Wuxing was nearly convinced by Clan Leader Jiang, as what he said was reasonable, and the potential shaking of faith in the People's Emperor was indeed possible.
The People's Emperor's strength partly lay in his own formidable power, and partly in the faith bestowed by successive People's Emperors, multiplying his power to an extremely terrifying level, surpassing even immortals despite not being one.
Outside the Nine Provinces, space is chaotic, and extraterritorial demon attacks occur only once every few centuries, but each time brings a catastrophic threat to the Nine Provinces. As the foremost expert of the Nine Provinces, the People's Emperor is the first to battle the demons, with over half of the People's Emperors dying in this process, few ending their lives peacefully.
If Jiang People's Emperor were to fall in future battles with demons due to a decline in faith, Yuan Wuxing would indeed feel guilty for life.
"Clan Leader Jiang makes a valid point. But since the Jiang family knew it might shake people's faith in the People's Emperor, why did they still perform the blood sacrifice on infants?"
Clan Leader Jiang replied with shame, "The ancestors were greedy for worldly pleasures, wanting to break through to the Nascent Soul stage to enjoy more days. Who would have thought one misstep would lead to eternal regret, making it hard to turn back."
Jiang Li was greatly surprised, "What are you saying, Clan Leader Jiang? If the Jiang family wishes to turn back, how could I not help?"
Clan Leader Jiang felt a glimmer of hope, realizing that those who pride themselves on being righteous cannot be coerced or bribed but must be persuaded with righteousness.
Unexpectedly, Jiang Li continued, "Even if Yuan Wuxing and I don't pursue the Jiang family, other cultivators will come to investigate. I'll give the Jiang family a way out: the laws of Great Zhou stipulate that the deceased are not held accountable. Please have Jiang Yixing acknowledge his mistakes and take his own life."
Clan Leader Jiang's smile froze, momentarily at a loss for words to refute.
Indeed, as long as the ancestor dies, the matter would be resolved, but how could that be possible? I came to put on a show to stop you from making trouble, how did it end up with my ancestor being written off!
"Mr. Zhang Li, you're joking."
"Just speaking from the heart."
Clan Leader Jiang's face turned so dark it could drip water, slowly rising without the previous compassionate demeanor.
"It seems Mr. Zhang Li insists on resolving this matter."
Yuan Wuxing finally realized he had been acting all along, followed by a wave of fear. Such an old fox is indeed terrifying, not a single word or expression can be trusted. Fortunately, Senior Zhang Li was here.
"It's not about resolving anything, just a preference for seeing things through to the end. Clan Leader Jiang, please."
Clan Leader Jiang snorted coldly and left with a wave of his sleeve.
What do you think?
