Chapter 659 Is chaos better than order? (part 14)
Let's take a second look in slow motion to what happened a second ago, initially the healing effect of the pill actually tried to keep the body of the vice-captain together, in fact he managed to raise his arms to protect his neck and a light blue light shone from the cut parts making then start to reattach them where they originally belonged.@@novelbin@@
Needless to say, but the pain experienced by the vice-captain was real, he barely managed to not scream since the pill he took temporarily dulled his pain receptors, thanks to the poison which contained.
However just as the happiness oof having survived had started to form in the mind of the vice-captain, the cutting marks which were the only signs of him having being cut, besides his armor, intent and shield which's sliced parts were flying in every direction, that were left after the pill started taking effect, suddenly heated up to then turn into burning marks.
What happened next is obvious, but the process looked different at slow motion, first of all, the body parts that were reattaching themselves, separated once again as the healing was abruptly stopped, those arms which the vice-captain used as a last resort shield for his neck, went out of the way just in time for the second red slashing light released by Iris's pretty hand, which was smaller than the first one to land on the enemy's neck to finish the job.
The difference was of fractions of a second, which created the illusion that Iris simply slashed her hand and the vice-captain's body was cut in many pieces, but the reality is that there were two slashes fulfilling two different purposes, one nullified the effects of the healing and also burned the water element added to the armor of the vice-captain and the second one ended his life.
'Previously she could do five "small" slashing lights, but when it comes to getting serious, she can only create two, at the same time that red sword mark didn't appear before, so this must be the real aspect of the technique she used', thought Aster whose golden pupils were returning to their normal state.
Speaking of which, seeing that the captain looked as if he had seen a ghost after somewhat recognizing the attack which Eris used, and considering the surprised yet happy smile that has been on Layla's pretty face ever since Iris's fight started, said technique must belong to the Bladeheart.
'When she asked my "permission" on whether she could fight for real or if she needed to keep feigning, I imagined she had some grievances she wanted to vent out, but I didn't think she would use something so amazing to slap those guys on the face, that for sure is not something a mixed blood should be able to wield, serves them right', amusingly concluded Aster.
The straightforward red-haired girl, did take to heart when Aster told her that formalities between friends weren't needed, she outright asked if he would cover for her even if she finally stopped holding herself back so much, it was cute, she was like a child asking for permission to show off a bit.
And very much to her happiness, Aster told her that she could, naturally there was a limit as to how much she could do in the open, but there was a wide area to play since it would take some serious effort to offend the Redheart representatives more than when Aster told them that if they wanted to take Iris back, their ancestor should come in person to pay him the "ransom", after all.
"Y-You, how the hell can you use that!", exclaimed the captain in disbelief, and he wasn't the only one, the green and silver robed elders from the Supreme Elemental sect as well as the women from the Redheart family all glared at Layla, who couldn't help but laugh at them.
"What, you have seen other talented princesses from the Redheart before, so why the disbelief?", she mockingly said, making them grit their teeth.
"Humph, we knew that "some" among the Bladeheart pitied that girl, but to think the Bladeheart princess would lower herself enough to even teach "Sword Hand" to a mixed blood, I wonder what the matriarchs will say when they get a wind of this", said one of the two female representatives from the Redheart, to which Layla's smile turned into a cold smirk.
"Go ahead, I as the one who holds the record of being the youngest ever to master the first level of Sword Hand, got permission from the one who holds the sole physical copy of the physical manual for it, to teach it to whoever the hell I want, family or not, once, I will personally bow to you if the matriarchs dare to scold me about it… if you dare to accept my bow, that is", she said.
A silence so absolute that the sound of a sweat drop forming on the forehead of the Redheart representative that spoke earlier, could be heard and it was for a good reason.
Like everyone knows, the efficiency of intent diminishes when applied to anything that is not what it should be used in, so even if for a talented swordsman a twig can be used to cut mountains, the fact that it can't replace a real sword still remains.
But of course, those who follow the usage of certain weapons to the point of obsession, wouldn't abide by such a thing, and so ways to reach the same level of strength without the need for a spirit weapon had always been studied.
Naturally the results tend to be disappointing most of the time, however, positive results do emerge from time to time when an extremely talented person raises in a weapon focused force or family.
So, a technique that allows someone to produce the same result that using a spirit weapon to attack alongside intent without the spirit weapon, is incredibly rare in the four Heavenly Quadrants, rare enough to be treated and restricted as an exclusive legacy within the direct descendants of a family.
Sword Hand basically allows a sword cultivator to combine intent, body and spirit energy to produce an attack that wouldn't lose when compared to using a real sword, the shock was caused not only by the fact that Iris actually learned to use something as complex as that, but because as a non-pure Bldeheart descendant and not being the disciple of someone who has at least read the whole thing, she learned to use it at such a young age.
She who is a few months younger than eighteen, managed to use Sword Hand when the youngest ever as of current to use it, who is Layla was only around a year and two months younger back then.
And you might think what's the big deal if there is more than a year of difference, well, the difference is that Layla is not only a "pure" Bladeheart, but she was taught by someone who knows the whole manual of the Sword Hand, meaning the insight that her teacher could impart to her, far surpassed what she could do for Iris.
In other words, had Iris been given the same conditions, there is a chance she could have equaled Layla or even… surpassed her record, that doesn't necessarily mean she would have been more talented than the Bladeheart princess, but this achievement puts her at the same level as the other direct Bladeheart descendants and even the "genius" which was adopted by the Redheart as a whole.
While being a mixed that didn't receive active support even at the level of average direct members of the Redheart family, which is what like rubbing salt on the wounds for the representatives of the Redheart family.
"It's not like that girl is the only one among the youngest generation of the Redheart that can use Sword Hand, I seem to remember we have someone like that in the top rankings of the fire branch from our sect, and there are a few more within the main territory of the Redheart family, anyway", said the green robed elder as if to break the awkward silence.
'On the other hand, that girl has not received special support unlike the one at our sect, so it would be worth to see how far she has gotten into a technique that even the descendants of the one who created it, find nightmarish to learn and master… it wouldn't be funny if "that person" were to get interested in that isolated princess all of a sudden', he added to himself.
In some really singular cases, low ranked forces don't reflect the strength of the one backing them and one of the most if not the most famous example of that, is actually the Bladeheart family, which is at most a second-tier force by itself without the Fireheart and Blazeheart families into the mix, but has a monster guarding the fort.
And it is said that the reason as to why said monster was created, is the Sword Hand spirit technique exclusive to the Bladeheart family, the only exception so far being that for "fairness" purposes the Bladeheart shared it to the other two families once a few generations ago with the condition they could teach what they memorized from the original manual back then, to only one person, this iron set rule broke due to Layla using her one time privilege as a record holder for Iris though.
Anyway, this technique has some fame among sword cultivators and sword related lineages, as in "If it is aimed at you, don't block but dodge" kind of fame, thanks to the monster from the Bladeheart.
Of course, let alone Iris, even Layla, the current Bladeheart matriarch or other elders with similar authority, are still far from reaching that level, but for the captain who didn't know anything about the complex situation in the Redheart, it meant another thing, that his backer either knew and didn't tell him such an important information which is bad or that his backer didn't know about such an important information which is even worse.
But then a glimmer of hope shone in the clouded mind of the captain as he noticed the slightly tired expression on Iris's pretty face.
'That's right, she is only a Stellar Constellation in the body path and at most she should have had solidified the initial stage of peak second level intent, so she must have used an insane amount of spirit energy to make up for it… yeah she might be more talented than expected but she is lacking as she didn't receive any proper support!', he inwardly yelled in his heart as he raised his trident and exploded in spirit energy.
"Booom!", a bright grey pillar of light appeared in the battlefield as the captain pushed his spirit energy reserves to the limit, if the vice-captain were to be alive, he would have for sure cursed the captain, since the technique he was using was at another level when compared to the one he was using when he acted as a shield.
It was for a good reason though, the captain was actually using yang radiance as the though hard to notice due to the brightness of the shiny metal layer covering his body, still faintly visible yellow flames that sparked from time to time at random parts of his body suggested.
And you might ask, why is that a good reason, well, Reflective Skin is the result of a twice improved body-oriented technique, and so the user does need a lot of physical energy to maintain it, not to mention that since they focus in elemental defense, they have to consume big chunks of spirit energy and their own attributes as well.
In other words, from the very beginning the guys from the Supreme Elemental sect were already fighting in a buffed state, so now add to that yang radiance and both the energy consumption and the toll on the body becomes even greater, at least it's not something that an earth realm cultivator should do.
It wouldn't be a lie to say that the captain was losing days of his life with each second that passed, just by spiking to the current level he had attained and then he was burning yang which for a non-dual cultivator is not easy to replenish, without the proper resources, meaning the side effects will worsen even more, he was quite literally going all out.
"Blinding Piercer!", the captain pointed his trident at Iris and all the spirit and yang energy he had gathered was injected into his spirit weapon, turning the metal trident into a mass of blinding silver light, that then flashed at high speed towards the enemy. Just for Iris to unsheathe her sword at an incredibly high speed, it was to the point that the friction between the red jade and metal sword produced sparks when it was taken out of its scabbard, then said sparks evolved into a sea of flames that expanded with Iris as the center.
For the ones observing the fight, a silvery shooting star rushed towards the red-haired girl, only for its brightness to be opaqued by a giant red flame sun that engulfed both Iris and the captain.
Aster couldn't help but bitterly smile at the straightforward red-haired girl's choice to end the fight.
'What a "demanding" friend', he amusingly thought as his pupils changed to the vertical shaped ones of a dragon to get a perfect view of what was about to happen, it's worth mentioning that he did so even before Iris finished engulfing everything in the vicinity in her flames.
'Damn it!', the green robed elder on the other hand, couldn't help but curse at the wall of fire that blurred his vision, most of the presents were the same, since Iris's flames were in the way, they could only see a few shades from within the red fire sun that was instantly created by her.
Inside of said mass of red flames, the captain broke in sweat on the spot, even with his Reflective Skin he felt his insides starting to boil due to the high heat, however he didn't dare to get distracted, in his mind he had just one way out and that was to land his attack on Iris.
'Pierce her!!!', he inwardly screamed as he thrusted his shinning trident at the red-haired girl, the driving force behind of it actually caused a shockwave and the veins on the captain's arms bulged and some even ruptured, he put his everything behind that attack which Aster judged to be able to cause destruction at Sea of Knowledge level.
So now imagine what his expression became like, when Iris whose chest was a few centimeters away from being pierced by the trident a fraction of a second ago, casually moved her body to the left, perfectly avoiding both the physical and energy attacks brought by the trident.
"Booom!", the trident shot all the energy it had absorbed earlier which took the impulse of the momentum created by the high-speed movement and the thrust used by the captain, creating a straight beam of silvery light which clashed against the wall of fire surrounding them.
A deafening explosion as well as a clash of energy, resulted from the captain's attack trying to pierce through Iris's flames, only to be completely overwhelmed a few moments later, very much to the disbelief of the captain whose face turned ashen.
"Why the surprise, I willingly choose to remain a peak Star Tribulation until I fixed a few things in my body path cultivation, it's only natural that my spirit energy is way stronger than that of someone who was spoon-fed resources in secret by that woman's disciple", calmly said Iris, which made the captain grit his teeth, he finally lost it.
"What the hell is up with you, how can a freaking energy and body cultivator dodge my Blinding Piercer, it's a spirit technique created to kill damn soul cultivators!", he screamed, actually forgetting that since his attack failed, he was as good as dead.
In a rare occasion, Iris showed disdain towards the captain.
"Well, you said it yourself, it's a technique created to kill "soul cultivators" not "monstrously talented soul cultivators" and it just so happen that my training partner since I joined the Myriad Occupation sect belongs to the latter", she said to then add.
"So, the "defects" which you wanted to exploit have not existed since a long time ago, knowing that two-faced woman, she just used you to confirm that without caring for the losses due to the special current situation".
The captain lost all color on his face, the premise of them badly wounding or killing their target were based on the fact that they could exploit the "flaws" that their benefactor told them about, so if they didn't exist to begin with, they were sent here as cannon fodder, there was no other possible answer.
"Swordplay and flames that don't lose to those of the talented direct pure descendants as well as damn mastery on Sword Hand, we never stood a chance to begin with…", mumbled the captain as he turned around, but just as he was about to try and flee for dear life, Iris's sword beheaded him by cutting through his trident, intent, the metal layer which was still protecting him and his defensive spirit treasure in the form of the clothes he wore.
"Phew", the red-haired girl exhaled, the amazing scene of all the flames she released, being absorbed into the scabbard as she sheathed her sword was what followed.
As the flames disappeared, the scene of the captain's beheaded body falling from the sky was what welcomed the representatives of the other sects and forces, the silver robed elder from the Metal branch had a twisted expression on his face.
He had just discovered a few hidden gems within the Iron hall and they all ended up dead in a matter of minutes, he was furious.
And he wasn't the only one, the two female elders from the Redheart were literally trembling due to anger, Iris not only achieved something in what sword cultivation regarded, that should be reserved only for the talented direct descendants from the Bladeheart, since Layla is an anomaly.
But she also just showed to have a fire attribute that wouldn't lose when compared to the same group but from the Fireheart, which as amusing as it might sound, given that she technically is the princess of the Fireheart family, is an incredible humiliation for them as they quite turned their backs on them, due to her mixed blood and instead focused on the other pure Fireheart direct descendants.
'Talent on equal with pure direct descendants from both families while having only a 50% of blood from each… plus Sword Hand, damn it!', inwardly cursed both of the female Redheart elders.
Layla who could practically tell what the others were thinking based on their grim expressions, instead focused on something else instead of Iris, the neck severed head of the captain, from which she could feel a "familiar" sensation.
Then as if she was hit by a lightning out of the blue, she stole a gaze at Aster only to see him slightly smile at her.
'No way… she reached the peak of the second level of intent and more importantly, did he actually set up a stage to use Sword Hand to draw other people's attention away from it!', she screamed in her heart.
Layla was momentarily speechless, she honestly felt a bit worried when she saw Iris showing her real level in what swordsmanship and even energy path regarded which was represented by the fact that she learned Sword Hand at such a young age, since that would create more pressure from their family to bring her back, however if she reached the peak of the second level of intent, then things completely changed.
Iris indeed told her that Aster inspired her to improve her intent, but she thought it was a minor possible advance, which is not to be looked down when it comes to the peak second level intent, as each stage gets harder than the previous.
Sword Hand as amazing as it can become and as useful as it is even at its early stages, is ultimately a spirit technique, it can be taught and explained with the help of someone else without much of a bad side.
Intent on the other hand, can't be imparted by anyone else without causing major negative effects on the one being taught, so while girl younger than 18 who has reached the early stage of peak second level is a talented genius, the same girl who had reached the peak stage of second level intent can't be described with the same word anymore.
Layla knows it better than anyone, because besides herself, only the one who holds the sole physical copy of the Sword Hand manual as of current and the one who created, had achieved that within the history of the Bladeheart family.
And now thanks to the stage set up by cunning black-haired youth who has been supervising the battlefield since everything started, as Layla was sure such an obscure tactic couldn't come from the straightforward red-haired girl, the last thing any of the representatives and people from other families and forces, would think about when it came to Iris, would be what level has her intent reached as of current.
'Even I was a month or two older when I reached the peak stage of second level, that little girl, conspiring against your older sister for the sake of a boy… we'll have to have a throughout talk later humph', thought Layla.
Since Aster needed to know a lot of things about the Redheart family's history to mount this whole thing so perfectly, to the point that had she not been the one who taught Iris "Sword Hand" she wouldn't have realized why Iris suddenly showed her swordplay and flames in front of everyone like that and would instead be tricked into believing that she was like the other hidden talents that are coming out of the shadows to try and ride the wave caused by the distortions to jump onto the stage of the high ranked Stellar Systems, like it happened to the green robed elder and all other representatives who witnessed her fight a moment ago.
"Daaaamn, what do you women from the Bladeheart family get fed to become monsters at such a young age", jokingly said William from the sides, besides Layla he was the only other one who wasn't informed of Aster's plan that noticed about the really important advance attained by Layla, due to a "personal" experience that he would wish not to remember though.
Naturally such a brutish comment earned him a cold glare from Layla, which made the shirtless William look at the sides to avoid the death glare from the Bladeheart princess.
Speaking of which, Aster could also feel he was getting his share from it too, though unlike what was directed to William, Layla was more interested in how did he contribute to her jumping two minor stages all the way to the peak, to the point that she just needed a little push to set a foot into the third level.
'Hehe, imagine how will those pretty green eyes would shine when she realizes you are half into the third level of sword intent, quite a good strategy to reach the heart of a "Bladeheart" princess, darling~', playfully said Lilia, making Aster nearly trip in the air.
What do you think?
