Chapter One: The Awakening
The early morning light filtered through the cracked windows of the orphanage, casting long, crooked shadows on the cold stone floor. The faint scent of stale bread mingled with the dampness of wet wool, the air thick with the bitter tang of age. It was a scent that Helios had become familiar with over the years, as it clung to the walls of the building just as much as the quiet weight of his loneliness. He could feel the cold creeping into his bones, but he didn’t mind. The chill had always been a part of him, something he had long since stopped noticing.
His fingers rested against the edge of the long wooden table, tracing shapes in the dust that had accumulated over time. He didn’t mind the dust either. It was always there, like him, unbothered by the passing of the world around it. The orphanage was a place where time stood still—no one cared to clean the edges, the forgotten corners, or the neglected spaces. Here, in this place, Helios had learned to fade into the background, an unnoticed shadow among the other nameless children.
There were only vague fragments of memories that he could recall from his past. His parents—beautiful, strong—were always present in those fleeting visions. His mother, Isolde, with her silver hair and bright green eyes that glowed with an ethereal warmth, and his father, Caelum, with dark eyes that seemed to hold the weight of the world. They were both gone. They had died in the Great War, fighting against the nekros, those dark entities from another world. Helios had never known them. Their deaths were a tragedy, an event that shaped the world and yet meant nothing to him. He was just another orphan, another child lost to the chaos of a broken world.
Helios had never questioned who he was or why he was alone. His life at the orphanage had been one of silence and solitude. There were moments of camaraderie with the other children, but they were fleeting, fleeting like everything else. He didn’t long for connection, for family. There was something in him that resisted the idea of bonds. If he ever thought about his parents, it was only for a fleeting second before the weight of their absence pushed the thoughts aside. His parents had died for a world that no longer seemed to care about him.
But today was different. A strange feeling had settled in his chest, a heaviness that didn’t belong. It was the day of the Awakening Test, a ritual all children of magical potential underwent when they reached the age of eleven. The test was designed to determine a child’s elemental affinity—the magic that resided within them. Every child who possessed magical potential was required to take the test, and it was an event that held both excitement and trepidation for most.
Helios hadn’t paid much attention to the talk of magic. He had heard the stories from the older children, heard the whispers of the magical families who sent their children to the prestigious Arcana Academy, where young magicians honed their abilities. But magic had never been his concern. He had no family, no magical bloodline to speak of. He was just one more nameless face in the crowd.
Yet this morning, the unease within him had grown stronger. As if something was awakening in him, something he couldn’t understand. He was not sure why, but his heart raced with an unfamiliar anticipation.
The sound of footsteps echoed down the hall, and Helios was snapped from his thoughts. The door to the main room creaked open, and Madam Maris, the strict and no-nonsense headmistress of the orphanage, entered. She was a stout woman, her graying hair pulled tightly into a bun, wearing a simple blue dress that was far too big for her frame. She looked at Helios with a raised brow, as though her arrival were a well-known routine.
“Helios, come,” she said curtly, her voice as sharp as ever. “You’ve been called for.”
Helios blinked in confusion, unsure of what she meant. “Called for? What do you mean?”
“The Arcana Academy instructor is here for you.” Madam Maris’ voice carried a hint of disapproval. “Apparently, they’ve taken an interest in you. You’re going to take the Awakening Test. Hurry up and get ready.”
The words “Arcana Academy” felt surreal in Helios’ mind. The academy was the highest institution for magic in the kingdom, a place where only the most talented children were chosen. He had heard whispers of it over the years, the shining halls where the best magicians honed their craft. But why would they want him, a nameless orphan without a trace of magic? Helios wasn’t sure what to think, but the pressure of Madam Maris’ gaze made him move quickly, pulling on his simple cloak and making his way to the door.
The road to the Arcana Academy stretched far ahead, twisting through dense forests and across rolling fields. The wind howled through the trees, shaking the branches with a fierce urgency, as if nature itself were responding to the tension that hung in the air. Helios walked alongside the academy instructor, Professor Varys, a tall, imposing figure with silver hair that shimmered in the sunlight. His eyes were a piercing violet, sharp and calculating, and his gaze seemed to settle on Helios as though he were measuring him in ways Helios couldn’t comprehend.
Professor Varys had said little during the journey, his silence adding to the tension that hung thickly between them. Helios couldn’t help but wonder what had brought the instructor to the orphanage. Why him? There were dozens of children in the orphanage, many with brighter prospects, surely. Yet here he was, walking toward the gates of the Arcana Academy, heart pounding in his chest.
The academy loomed before them like a great fortress, its towering spires rising high above the trees, piercing the sky with their majesty. The stone walls of the academy were etched with intricate symbols, ancient runes that Helios had only heard of in whispers. The very air around the academy felt alive with magic, crackling with an energy that made his skin tingle.
They passed through the massive iron gates, guarded by two towering figures in ceremonial armor. The guards stood silent, their expressions unreadable, as they allowed Helios and Professor Varys to enter.
Inside the academy, the courtyard was bustling with activity. Children of all ages practiced their magic, conjuring fire and wind, summoning water, and commanding the earth beneath their feet. The air was alive with energy, each student’s magic a testament to the power that coursed through them. Helios had never seen magic like this before, and the sight filled him with awe. The flames that danced in the air, the gusts of wind that swirled with precision—it was both beautiful and intimidating.
Professor Varys led him through the courtyard, where the students were all gathered in a large circle. A stone platform stood at the center, surrounded by other instructors and academy officials. It was here that the Awakening Test took place, the pivotal moment in every child’s life.@@novelbin@@
Helios’ heart began to race. He had no idea what to expect. He was not like the others. He had no magical heritage, no family that could teach him how to control his abilities. What if the test revealed nothing? What if he failed?
The students lined up, one by one, stepping onto the stone platform to place their hands on the Awakening Stone, a massive, smooth gem that pulsed with an otherworldly energy. As each student touched the stone, a brilliant light would flash, revealing their elemental affinity. Some glowed with the fiery hues of flame, others shimmered with the blue of water or the earth’s green.
Helios was last in line. He stood on the edge of the platform, feeling the eyes of the gathered students on him. The weight of their gaze was heavy, and the sense of expectation made his chest tighten. But he couldn’t help but feel a strange sensation building inside of him. It was as if the air around him had shifted, as though something deep within him was stirring.
He stepped forward, his hands trembling as he reached for the Awakening Stone. The moment his palms made contact with the surface, a surge of warmth flooded through him. At first, it felt like a fire igniting within his chest, a blaze that spread through his body. But then, something else happened. A gust of wind whipped around him, pulling at his clothes and hair. Water rose from the stone, swirling in delicate patterns around his feet. The earth beneath him trembled, as though it were alive and responding to his presence.
The stone glowed brighter, its light expanding, filling the courtyard with a blinding brilliance. For a moment, Helios lost himself in the intensity of the energy. It was too much, too overwhelming. The power surged within him, threatening to break free.
But then, with a forceful pulse, everything stopped.
The light faded, leaving a stunned silence in its wake. Helios stood there, breathing heavily, his heart still racing. The stone had cracked, a faint crack running down its surface, evidence of the overwhelming energy that had been unleashed.
Professor Varys stepped forward, his expression unreadable, and placed a hand on Helios’ shoulder. “Well,” he said, his voice low and calm, “it seems you are not like the others. This is something… different.”
The crowd murmured, their whispers filling the air. Helios could hardly comprehend what had just happened. He had touched the stone, and yet it had revealed something beyond the normal elements—fire, wind, water, and earth had all manifested at once.
What do you think?
