“Oh,” he smiled brilliantly, “you could stab second brother with a knife, so poisoning me to death seems normal. Besides, it was my own choice to drink it. However, when I’m gone, you must be very sad, extremely sad, preferably crying your eyes out…”

“I wouldn’t be sad at all.”

“Wife, my belly is starting to hurt,” his smile froze on his face, “hurry, help me to the room.”

“What for?”

He shamelessly kissed her on the face, “I said I wanted to be with you one last time before I die, would you agree?”

“Get lost!”

...

“My belly hurts, can’t even move…” His whole body trembled in pain, but the corners of his mouth still held a rascally smile, “Wife, help me quickly. Otherwise, I’m afraid I won’t last much longer…”

She said, “Third brother, do you have an antidote?”

“I don’t have any antidote, your poison is too cleverly concocted, I only knew it was poison, couldn’t even tell the components apart,” he said with a pale face, “I have a very important matter to attend to…”

She didn’t know what important matter he referred to, but she helped him into his room as he wished.

On the table by his bed was paper and a pen, he clutched his belly, sitting at the bed’s edge, “Wife, could you grind some ink for me, your husband is shaking too much from the pain.”

As he requested, she took the ink stick, poured a bit of clean water into the inkstone, and ground the ink, then looked over at him, “Third brother, I’m really sorry, the poison you drank is a new concoction of mine, I truly haven’t found an antidote yet. You…”

His pale face showed an indifferent expression, “Let death come. Since you won’t be with me, I don’t want to live anyway.”@@novelbin@@

He staggered to his feet, and as she saw him approach, she stepped aside. He took up the pen, enduring the intense pain in his belly, and tried to write with steady hands two lines of text, followed by his signature.

No sooner had he finished writing than he slumped onto the bed.

She rushed to sit at the bed’s edge and called out, “Third brother!”

He looked at her with deep affection, his voice raspier, “Wife, I’m about to die. Only now do I realize how much I can’t bear to leave you…”

“Third brother…” She looked at his pale handsome face, her heart suddenly throbbing with pain.

“Wife, after I’m gone… don’t remarry… If you really must remarry, at least… mourn for me for five years…” His voice was so pained it broke off.

Listening to his final words, she asked, “Third brother, are you really going to die with no regrets?”

He smiled faintly, “No regrets. My life was saved by you… taking it back is only right… as long as you’re happy…”

Looking at his pallid face, a dull ache filled her heart, “Third brother, why put yourself through this?”

“Wife… I know I always… angered you,” he gazed at her intently, as if to imprint her features, her figure, and every expression into his memory,

“I angered you, because… I wanted all of your attention… I wanted to be the only one in your eyes. No matter how much I upset you before, let’s call it even now that I’m dying, forgive me, will you?”

“Yes.” Listening to his magnetically male voice, her voice choked up.

His head spun with pain, keeping his eyes open was a struggle, yet his lips maintained a smile, “Wife, kiss me… let me carry your scent with me…”

She leaned down, pressing a kiss to his pale thin lips.
