Chapter 689: Elder Sister Zandra
“Christa…”
A figure stared at Christa, who laid on the bed in a state of near lifelessness. This figure was invisible to those around her but it was there nevertheless. The figure gently reached out to Christa.
“Stop it. Possession without a ritual is a dangerous technique. The last time, it only succeeded because that girl had strong innate qualities and an exceptional affinity with you.”
“So, should I just leave my sister in this state?” Zandra's voice trembled with anger. Alphonse, the man in the white robe who had stopped her, simply shrugged his shoulders.
“We are spirits that are bound to the earth. Beings that can only exist between the mortal world and the underworld, thus we should not interfere with the living. Only our Adler blood allows us to maintain consciousness. We can speak to those who are close to us, but even that is an unnatural act.”
“But…”
“That girl possesses an exceedingly rare form of foresight magic. Unlike those with heterochromia, she was born with high magical power and no abnormalities. She is exceptional, almost like your younger brother, or rather, someone akin to the mages of ancient magical civilizations. Even so, she is still mentally immature so possession without any assistance could lead to a disaster.”
Zandra bit her lip at Alphonse’s explanation. The last time, Christa had submerged her consciousness, which allowed the possession with Zandra to succeed. This time was different as she was not in a receptive state. Zandra felt powerless because there was nothing she could do.
“We are beings who will fade with time so we can only watch and assist, but overcoming the difficulties that lie ahead is up to this individual.”“Then why do you still exist?”
“Because I am special.”
It was an infuriatingly reasonable and convincing explanation. The first emperor, Alphonse, had been an extraordinary mage. It was as if a mage from a lost ancient civilization had suddenly appeared.
“Christa, can you hear me?” Zandra began to speak to Christa. But there was no response.
“Her brother's death must have been a severe shock, thus making her close her heart. It’s not surprising for an immature child so don't waste your time.”
“This girl is strong enough to recover.”
“On what grounds?”
“She is my younger sister and your descendant.”
Alphonse chuckled and disappeared. In his place, Rita entered the room.
“Ku-chan! I brought a towel!” Rita called cheerfully, but Christa did not respond. While still smiling brightly, Rita began to wipe Christa's body. Zandra looked down and closed her eyes. ȓÄ𐌽∅฿ÈⱾ
“Don’t close your heart, Christa. Look ahead…”
If only she could tell her that Arnold was alive. While Zandra thought about this, Rita took out Christa's stuffed toy.
“Hey, Ku-chan. Al-nii is fine. He’s definitely alive so he hasn’t died. Right?”
Seeing the stuffed toy which Arnold had once given her, Christa's eyes regained a bit of life.
(This was the moment.)
Zandra thought so and shouted.
“Arnold is alive!”
In the Dark
In the pitch-black darkness where nothing could be seen, a faint light appeared. In there, Christa felt that nothing mattered anymore.
However, her ears caught a voice.
“Arnold is alive!”
A familiar voice. The impression of the owner of that voice had changed over time. While she had been a kind but clumsy sister, she was now a figure of terror.
Even such a person’s voice... The words that said that Arnold was alive made Christa react. Christa, who was looking down in the darkness, slightly opened her eyes. She saw her elder sister smiling gently as she embraced her. As she was softly embraced, Christa whispered.
“Zandra… aneue…”
“It’s alright… Arnold is alive. Have some courage and look ‘ahead.’ ”
It was a difficult request. Looking "ahead" always meant revealing unwanted things.
Recently, Christa had intentionally avoided thinking about the future. It was her way of coping with her ability.
What lay ahead? What would happen next?
If she thought about it, she would inadvertently peek into the future. Whether it came true or not, Christa instinctively understood that it was a possible future, and it was vivid. Therefore, she didn’t want to see it. Reality was hard enough. She couldn’t handle the suffering of the future as well. The political strife, the wars, the demons—all these things were burdens. Losing those close to her, thinking about the death of her loved ones had weighed heavily on her heart.
Unlike Rupert, Christa was not used to accepting that death as a given for humans. Rupert, being the youngest with a mother from the Sokal Empire, had always lived under the threat of being ousted and was raised with that awareness.
Christa on the other hand was always protected. Thus she couldn't accept death as a normal occurrence. Death was terrifying. She had seen it too much since she was young, making it more frightening than necessary.
She had even foreseen Wilhelm's death. And now her family was dying one by one so she couldn’t accept the cruelty of this world. It was too frightening, painful, and sad for her.
“Even so,”
Facing forward was unpleasant and her heart felt like it would break. She didn’t want anyone to die and wished for a happy family. She hated the fight for the throne that had turned and torn apart the sister who had once smiled so kindly.
“Don’t leave…”
“I’m ‘always’ by your side.”@@novelbin@@
With those words giving her the final push, Christa looked forward a little and she felt that she was not alone. In an instant, a battlefield came into view. She saw people getting hurt and falling and almost flinched. Yet, Christa kept looking ahead. Then, she saw Arnold in a black robe and next to him was Leonard, and there they were, all together.
“Everyone is there…”
Her family stood shoulder to shoulder. It was a scene that she somewhat recognized from the past, from when Wilhelm was still around. That scene came back to her now as the vision ended, but it was enough. She knew she had to keep going until then.
“Al-nii…”
Christa slowly sat up. Seeing this, Rita’s face lit up.
“Ku-chan!”
“Rita… I’m sorry.”
Apologizing to her for causing worry, Christa quickly got out of bed.
“Rita, do you have a string?”
“A string? Yes, but…”
Rita handed her a string and it was long enough for her. Christa used it to tie her hair into a ponytail while trying to make herself look more resolute.
“Excuse me…”
While knocking on the door, Alois entered cautiously. Upon seeing Christa finally get up, he sighed in relief.
“Marquis Simmel.”
“Y-Yes.”
Alois knelt at Christa’s authoritative tone.
“How many have gathered?”
“About one-sixth of the southern nobles, all of whom owe a debt to Prince Leonard and the Emperor.”
“Not enough… We need at least half of them to gather here.”
“That is difficult… Prince Wilhelm's influence is strong in the south…”
“I will go and persuade them myself.”
With that, Christa started walking. Alois was stunned by the sudden change in her but quickly followed when Rita chased after Christa.
“Our target is the Imperial Capital. Following the Empress’s decree, we will defeat the traitor Wilhelm.”
TL's Notes:
Christa is assembling THE Avengers... Or is the Avengers being assembled thanks to Christa and Rupert? Idk
What do you think?
