Chapter 172: Chapter 172: The Haunted House
“Husband, this is—?”
Qian Pengze’s wife, Li Mandong, looked at Zhong Niangyao with utter confusion in her eyes.
“Mandong, this lady is the Miss Zhong I’ve mentioned to you before,” Qian Pengze quickly introduced. “She’s the one who bought my Compass. And it was she who reminded me that our family—”
Although he didn’t finish his sentence, Li Mandong had already grasped the implied meaning. She indeed knew that the Compass had been sold, which gave them the money for her treatment. After their family had encountered so many issues, it dawned on her husband that the buyer of the Compass had once given him a warning.
Afterwards, they both concluded that this Miss Zhong must certainly be a master, and a skilled one at that. Her husband had gone to Tongtian Bridge several days in a row and had not found anyone, and unexpectedly, today he had brought the person directly over.
However, to her surprise, this Miss Zhong turned out to be so young.
For a moment, she couldn’t help but harbor a trace of doubt.
But she wasn’t a fool and naturally knew better than to voice her doubts so bluntly, so she just smiled and said, “I had no idea Miss Zhong would be so young!”
“Don’t be fooled by her youth, her abilities are anything but small.”
Even though Qian Pengze had not personally seen Zhong Niangyao’s capabilities, he had heard plenty about them at Tongtian Bridge, so now he had a lot of trust in her abilities. Of course, there was another more important reason – he had put all his hopes on Zhong Niangyao. He had no choice but to trust her.
Whether Li Mandong trusted her or not was of no concern to Zhong Niangyao. One very important reason she was willing to step in was that the Compass Qian Pengze had sold to her was indeed a fine item.
If it hadn’t been for the family emergency, Qian Pengze likely wouldn’t have sold such a family heirloom. Though she had already paid for it, she felt she had gotten the better deal, which was why she was willing to lend a hand this time.
After greeting, Zhong Niangyao directly said, “Let’s first go see your son, and then we can go to your house!”
“Do we need to go to the house too?” Li Mandong asked, somewhat surprised. “Is there a problem with the house?”
In the midst of speaking, a wave of nervousness came over her.
“We don’t know yet!” Qian Pengze quickly reassured her. “Don’t worry, after Miss Zhong has taken a look at our house, we’ll know. What you need to do now is to focus on recovering from your illness.”
“I’ll go with you!” Li Mandong said, “Since I’m not doing much here in the hospital, I’d rather go back with you to check things out. It’ll put my mind at ease.”
Qian Pengze was worried and did not want to agree, but he couldn’t argue with Li Mandong and eventually had to arrange for her to be temporarily discharged.
Zhong Niangyao, standing to one side, didn’t interject. Her visit was solely to resolve Qian Pengze’s issue; she wasn’t responsible for anything else.
After a glance at Qian Pengze’s son outside the hospital ward, they all went together to the Qian Family’s place.
Following Qian Pengze and Li Mandong, Zhong Niangyao arrived at a high-end residential area.
The house was purchased by Qian Pengze back when he still had his shop, and had it not been for Zhong Niangyao buying the Compass, they might have had to sell the house to pay for their medical expenses.
So, whether Zhong Niangyao was genuinely skilled or not, both Qian Pengze and Li Mandong were very grateful to her in their hearts.
Upon entering the house, Zhong Niangyao immediately felt a chill.
Qian Pengze and Li Mandong seemed completely unaware of it, their faces showing no change.
“Your house is quite cool,” Zhong Niangyao remarked meaningfully. “Don’t you feel uncomfortable living here?”
“Why would we?” Li Mandong shook her head. “We chose this place because it’s cool! You have no idea, even during summer we rarely need to turn on the air conditioning. This natural coolness is most comfortable.”
“Yes!” Qian Pengze nodded, then continued, “We are very satisfied with this house.”
“Then your minds must be very at ease,” Zhong Niangyao said to Qian Pengze and Li Mandong, her eyes filled with a hint of sympathy. “I just wanted to ask, when you bought this house, did you come across it by chance, or was it recommended to you by someone?”
Seeing the expression on Zhong Niangyao’s face made Qian Pengze and Li Mandong’s hearts skip a beat. “Miss Zhong, do you mean to say there’s a problem with our house?”
Though it was a question, they spoke as if certain, for they had already picked up clues from Zhong Niangyao’s tone and expression.
“This house was recommended by a brother of mine,” Qian Pengze said. “At the time, we even took him out for a meal to thank him!”
“Miss Zhong, what exactly is wrong with our house?” Li Mandong asked in a rush. “Could it be that our family has been brought to this point because of the house?”
“Hmm—” Zhong Niangyao pondered for a moment before speaking again, “You could say that, but also not. It is partly the reason.”
After considering her words, Zhong Niangyao spoke once more, “That is, could this house be a sinister house?”
“What?”
Qian Pengze and Li Mandong exclaimed in unison, then shivered together reflexively.
The previously refreshing chill now turned into a bone-piercing coldness in their hearts.
“This can’t be!” Qian Pengze forced a smile. “Before buying this house, I had inquired about it. There have never been any issues with this house!”
He wasn’t a fool – even though it was recommended by a friend, he had investigated beforehand. The price at which they had bought the house was somewhat below the market rate, which made him wary it could have issues.
Having found nothing alarming, he became reassured.
Out of gratitude to that friend, he even gave a handsome referral fee.
Li Mandong didn’t say anything, but her complexion grew grim.
“This is indeed a sinister house,” Zhong Niangyao reassured them. “However, you don’t need to worry too much. There are no ghosts in the house, just the resentment left by the victim.”
“The murdered person’s resentment is deep. Even though they have been taken away by hell, they left behind their resentment. Although quite substantial, it’s not enough to put your family in such a state. At most, it would cause some minor health impacts, such as poorer spirits, more colds, and coughs.”
Qian Pengze quickly caught on, “Miss Zhong, you mean our family’s plight is due to other reasons.”
What do you think?
