Chapter 507 Shadowfang Mines (3) Spidey Ambush
"Why? What does it do?"
Liora shot him a look, his eyes sharp and unyielding. "Not here, kid. Just trust me on this one."
There was an urgency in Liora's tone that Kael didn't dare question. He watched as the halfling slipped the staff fragment into his pack, his movements quick and almost reluctant, as though he were taking on a burden he didn't want but couldn't refuse.
Before Kael could press further, a faint vibration ran through the ground beneath their feet. He froze, his breath catching in his throat as the tremor grew stronger. The faint hum of the markings seemed to shift, their glow pulsing in time with the rhythmic tremor.
Liora's head snapped up, his expression instantly sharp and alert. "We need to move," he said, his voice tense.
Kael barely had time to register the words before the ground beneath them seemed to come alive, the vibrations intensifying. The sticky strands of web crisscrossing the cavern began to tremble, their silken threads vibrating like the strings of a harp plucked by an unseen hand.
A low, chittering sound echoed through the space, faint at first but growing louder with each passing second. It was a sound that set Kael's nerves alight, a primal warning that sent his pulse racing.
"Run," Liora commanded, his dagger already in hand. His voice was calm, but there was an urgency in his tone that sent Kael into motion without hesitation.
Kael didn't need to be told twice. He bolted, his lantern swinging wildly as he raced through the cavern. The sound of scuttling legs grew louder, filling the air with a deafening cacophony. He could feel the spiders closing in, their presence a dark, suffocating weight at his back.
Liora's voice sliced through the suffocating din like a blade. "Left! Now!"
Kael veered left instinctively, his heart pounding against his ribs like a caged beast. He barely avoided a cluster of sticky webs that shimmered ominously in the dim light of his enchanted lantern. The chittering of the Shadowfang Spiders filled the air, an unrelenting cacophony that made every nerve in Kael's body scream for him to run. His foot caught on a loose rock, and he stumbled, nearly pitching forward. The jarring movement sent his lantern swinging wildly, the shadows on the walls twisting into grotesque, crawling shapes.
"Keep moving!" Liora barked, his voice sharp with urgency.
Kael forced himself to push forward, his dagger clutched tightly in his trembling hand. The first spider lunged out of the darkness, its massive form a blur of gleaming black carapace and needle-like legs. Kael swung his blade wildly, the strike glancing off the creature's thick exoskeleton. The spider's fangs snapped dangerously close to his face, the sound like the crunch of breaking bone.
"Control your strikes!" Liora shouted, his tone more commanding than angry.
Kael gritted his teeth, his pulse roaring in his ears. He feinted left, then drove his dagger into the spider's leg. The creature let out a screech that reverberated through the cavern, its injured limb twitching as it stumbled back. Kael had barely caught his breath before another spider surged forward, its movements unnervingly quick.
This time, he was ready. Kael stepped to the side, his blade flashing as he drove it into the spider's soft underbelly. The creature convulsed, its legs curling inward as it collapsed in a heap. A fleeting sense of triumph filled him, but it was short-lived.
"Behind you!" Liora's warning was as sharp as the blade that flashed past Kael's ear.
Kael spun just in time to see Liora dispatch a spider that had been inches from sinking its fangs into his back. The halfling's movements were a blur, his strikes precise and deliberate. He didn't waste energy or time, every motion calculated to end a life.
"Eyes up, kid!" Liora snapped, his dagger slicing through another spider's leg. "You're not done yet!"
Kael's breaths came in ragged gasps as he turned to face the next threat. Another spider lunged at him, its mandibles clicking furiously. Kael ducked, the creature's bulk missing him by inches, and drove his blade upward. His dagger pierced the soft joint between its head and thorax, and the spider let out a gurgling screech before collapsing to the ground.
"Good!" Liora called, a rare note of approval in his voice. "But watch your footing!"
Kael stumbled again as the ground beneath him shifted. He caught himself just as another spider advanced, its legs moving with eerie precision. He prepared to strike, but Liora intercepted the creature first, his blade arcing in a clean, deadly stroke that severed two of its legs.
"Timing, Kael," Liora said as he stepped back, his eyes flicking toward the swarm that still encircled them. "It's not just about strength. It's about when and where you hit."
Kael swallowed hard, nodding as he adjusted his stance. His grip on his dagger tightened, and this time, when a spider lunged, he didn't panic. He sidestepped its attack, waiting for the perfect moment before driving his blade into its exposed underbelly.
The fight became a desperate dance. Liora's sharp commands guided Kael's movements, his voice a lifeline in the chaos. Kael began to anticipate the spiders' attacks, his strikes growing more deliberate and his movements more fluid. Sweat dripped down his brow, his arms ached, but he pressed on, determined to keep up with Liora's relentless pace.
Liora moved like a predator, his daggers flashing in the dim light as he cut through the swarm with deadly efficiency. His strikes were surgical, his steps measured, each movement designed to kill or incapacitate. Despite the chaos, there was a strange grace to his fighting style, a calm amidst the storm that Kael couldn't help but admire.
The spiders didn't relent, their numbers seeming endless. One managed to slip past Kael's defenses, its leg grazing his arm as it lunged. He hissed in pain but twisted, driving his blade into the creature's head before it could strike again.
"Not bad," Liora said as he dispatched another spider, his tone still sharp but tinged with grudging approval. "But don't get cocky. One slip, and you're spider food."
Kael barely managed a nod, his focus entirely on the fight. The chittering reached a fever pitch, the spiders closing in from all sides. He and Liora moved together now, their movements almost synchronized. When one struck high, the other went low. When one spider lunged, they countered in tandem, their blades finding flesh in perfect harmony.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the swarm began to thin. The remaining spiders hesitated, their movements slower, more cautious. Liora didn't give them a chance to regroup. He surged forward, his daggers flashing as he cut down the stragglers with brutal efficiency.
Kael, his limbs trembling and his chest heaving, managed to take down one last spider before the cavern fell eerily silent. The only sounds were the ragged breaths of the two fighters and the faint drip of water echoing through the tunnels.
Kael collapsed to his knees, his dagger slipping from his grasp as his hands braced against the cold stone floor. His chest burned with each breath, his entire body trembling from the exertion.
"Not bad," Liora said, standing over him. His voice was steady, almost casual, as if he hadn't just fought off a swarm of deadly spiders. He wiped his blade clean on a scrap of cloth, his sharp eyes scanning the cavern for any lingering threats. "But don't let it go to your head. We've still got work to do."
Kael looked up at him, his breaths still labored. Despite the exhaustion etched into his features, there was a flicker of determination in his eyes.
"I'll do better," he said, his voice steady despite the lingering fear.
Liora's smirk returned, faint but genuine. "You'd better," he said, extending a hand to help Kael to his feet. Stay tuned for updates on My Virtual Library Empire@@novelbin@@
Kael nodded, forcing himself to his feet. His body ached, but the determination in his eyes hadn't dimmed. Together, they moved deeper into the cavern, the faint glow of the runes casting long shadows on the walls.
As they prepared to leave, Liora's gaze lingered on the markings. His expression was dark, his jaw tight. "Trouble's brewing," he muttered, almost to himself.
Kael frowned. "What kind of trouble?"
Liora's smirk returned, though it lacked its usual sharpness. "Nothing you need to worry about," he said, his tone light. "Focus on staying alive. That's your job."
Kael didn't argue, though his curiosity burned. As they stepped into the cool night air, the weight of the mines lingered, a silent reminder of the dangers they had faced—and the ones yet to come.
Far from the mines, in a dimly lit chamber filled with the faint hum of magical energy, a figure watched their progress through a shimmering projection. His expression was cold, his sharp eyes unblinking as he studied Kael's every move.
"Kael Aurenhart," he murmured, his voice as sharp as the blade at his side. A faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips, though it carried no warmth.
"Finally the appearance of the first main character."
What do you think?
