Chapter 229: Are You Planning to Use This to Threaten Me?
The Inquisition Bureau.
"We've confirmed it. He is indeed Nosferatu, a Class B fugitive listed in The Covenant's warrant issued by Gistas." Rebecca, the supervising Inquisitor on duty at the Bureau, reported directly to Aiden. "We've already taken him to the interrogation room."
"Good." Aiden nodded.
"Were you the one who caught him, Senior?" Rebecca asked.
"No. Strictly speaking, this gentleman caught him. He also tracked him down. I merely tagged along as a witness." Aiden gestured towards Kyle behind him.
"A pleasure to meet you, beautiful lady. My name is..." Kyle placed his top hat over his chest, an ingratiating smile appearing on his face.
"Mr. Kyle Kaodo, isn't it? The registered non-human who previously checked in with the Bureau," Rebecca stated before he could finish.
A flicker of surprise crossed Kyle's face, but he quickly recovered, nodding with a smile. "Yes, that's me, that's me. Oh my, when I first arrived, I never imagined a fugitive would be hiding here! How could someone as filled with a sense of justice as myself tolerate such a thing? These reckless vampires are truly detestable! They give law-abiding blood-kin like us a bad name, causing trouble for everyone. No class, poorly raised!"
Kyle clenched his fist as he spoke, his face filled with indignation, looking for all the world like an eager, righteous, and upstanding young man."Your sister is also sitting in a cell," Aiden reminded him dryly from the side.
According to The Covenant's regulations, non-humans leaving their home country must promptly report and register with the local Inquisition institution.
Judging by Kyle's reaction, he likely hadn't met Rebecca when he came to the Bureau to register.
Yet Rebecca recognized him immediately, indicating that Kyle's registration information had been quickly distributed to most Inquisitors.
Of course, not all non-humans receive such focused attention. As a Prince-level vampire, Kyle's power was entirely on par with that of a Class S fugitive. Even without a criminal record, he would naturally draw intense scrutiny from the Inquisition.
In other words, should any vampire-related cases arise, he would easily become a primary suspect.
Kyle, having noticed this, immediately began playing up his persona as a law-abiding citizen.
"Alright. Thank you very much for your support and cooperation with our work. Now, could we trouble you for a little more of your time to answer some questions?" Rebecca used a rather official tone, gesturing for Kyle to follow other junior Inquisitors deeper down the corridor. "The bounty will be issued to you after the questioning."
"Er..." Kyle hesitated, glancing in that direction. "Isn't that where they just took the fugitive? Those are the interrogation rooms, right?"
"The rooms are just close to each other. Don't worry," Rebecca smiled.
"Then... what about the Warden?" Kyle pointed at Aiden.
"I will question him personally about the situation," Rebecca replied.
"Well, Inquisitor, you could just ask me a few questions directly. No need for all that trouble." Kyle gave a dry laugh and put his arm around Aiden's shoulder. "We're good friends, you know!"
Rebecca looked at Aiden.
"We are not friends." Aiden, expressionless, lifted Kyle's hand off his shoulder, then glanced at him. "Cooperate with the investigation. You haven't done anything wrong, have you?"
It was clear Kyle really disliked being questioned alone by the Inquisition, but Aiden's intention was precisely to have the Bureau thoroughly check if Kyle warranted any suspicion.
"Don't be so distant, Warden! We've already visited that nightclub district together," Kyle insisted, leaning closer. "That's the strongest bond between men!"
"Don't twist the situation. I only went with you because you said there was a fugitive there," Aiden frowned.
"Don't say that! No need to worry, I'll absolutely forget everything I saw regarding you and that nightclub!" Kyle waved his hand dismissively, his tone becoming meaningful.
Rebecca suddenly shot Aiden a surprised look.
Aiden looked back at Kyle, also surprised. "Are you planning to use this to threaten me?"
It seemed Kyle hadn't really listened to the earlier explanation. But regardless, investigating a case at a nightclub wasn't exactly something to feel guilty about.
Besides, even if he had actually gone for other reasons... it wasn't a big deal. He wasn't seeing anyone.
"Uh..." Kyle hadn't expected such a blunt reaction. He could only smile sheepishly and step back slightly. "O-Okay, fine. I'll cooperate with the investigation. It's a necessary procedure, after all. Understood, understood. I'm a law-abiding citizen."
After watching Kyle being led away, Aiden turned his head and saw Rebecca looking at him, frowning slightly, and seemingly hesitant to speak.
"What is it?" Aiden asked casually.
"Senior, just now..." Rebecca asked, looking concerned. "What was that about the nightclub he mentioned?"
"Previously, when I was seeking justice for Veronica, I tracked the real culprit to that nightclub and went there to investigate. That's all. When I passed by today, one of the staff there recognized me, and that vampire probably jumped to some strange conclusion," Aiden explained calmly.
"Oh, I see..." Rebecca breathed a sigh of relief and changed the subject back to the current case. "Senior, you specifically went there with that Prince just now to catch the vampire fugitive—you must have heard about that case, right?"
"What case?" Aiden paused, taken aback.
"You... haven't heard?" Seeing his perplexed expression, Rebecca also paused for a moment.
Aiden shook his head and recounted why Kyle had initially sought him out, and how Kyle had specifically shared intelligence about the Blood Moon Cult after learning Aiden was a former Inquisitor.
After listening, Rebecca's brow furrowed as well. "So, does this mean the Class B fugitive just captured is also a member of the Blood Moon Cult?"
"Ah, this Blood Moon Cult they're talking about... it's probably not the same group we dismantled five years ago..."
Just as Aiden started to explain, Rebecca nodded. "We know."
"You already knew?" Aiden was a little surprised.
If the "also" Rebecca mentioned didn't refer to the group from five years ago...
"Because in the last two days, we've captured two vampires holding the title of Viscount. One of them is also a Class B fugitive. Both claimed to be members of the Blood Moon Cult," Rebecca explained.
Aiden thought for a moment, then suddenly realized something. "Is this the case you were referring to just now?"
"It's not that simple. A week ago, the Mounted Police received a murder case involving a dumped body. At the scene, they found signs suggesting the victim's blood had been drawn by a vampire, so the case was transferred to us. Additionally, the police department received two missing persons reports this week. We can't confirm a connection yet, but it's highly likely." Rebecca said with a grave expression. "And in these three incidents, two of the victims... worked in the Red-light district."
What do you think?
