Chapter 599 What If I Left?
(From Blue's Perspective)
"You know, I want to tell you something," I said. I had calmed down a lot by then. Ava's face kept appearing in my mind and I was pushing it away. I had to think. I could not break down now.
Dem sat down on the bed next to me. Doctor Dimitri told me not to leave bed for the time being. Honestly, it was frustrating, but I also could see how important it was. I could barely stand without wobbling. It was shock, he said.
I could see that Dem did not want to listen to me. Perhaps he knew what I was about to say.
Dion was sleeping on my chest and Demian on my thigh. It was hilarious and if the situation had not been so utterly grim, Dem and I would have laughed about it.
"Tell me you will take me serious," I said, holding his hand.
"I will, unless you are about to tell me that you will sacrifice yourself," he said. When I did not say anything, he laughed in a cruel way, like a madman. "You are thinking that, aren't you? You are always all about sacrificing yourself for the good of people. You want to be a saint, don't you?"
"That's not true, Dem and you know it. I want to do it because I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me."
"Then what about me?" he yelled. "Won't I get hurt if you leave me? Won't I feel like dying if you leave me?"
"You will have the children," I said in a low voice.
"Fuck the children, Blue! You know damn well that I had kids only because you wanted them," he said. I gasped. Although I knew it was the truth, it still took me by surprise that he admitted so readily. "You think I wanted you to hurt your body and mind to bring two kids into the world? You think I wanted you to suffer?
You think I wanted to hear kids crying in the middle of the goddamn night?"
"Dem, please."
"No, you won't go anywhere."
"You can't decide for me."
"Your kids can. How can they live without a mother? You might as well think that I won't take care of them without you."
"You are their father, Dem!"
"I am your husband first, Blue! And you are my wife first before their mother! You know I care about you more than them and I did all of it because of you. Without you, there is no meaning to any of this. A family? You are my family, Blue.
You. The kids are extra parts."
"So what you are saying is that you won't take care of them if I'm not there? Well, then maybe Ruby can take care of them. Or even, Iris. Hell, even Perita will be willing. Luc's parents can take care of them as well. Dem, you can't stop me."
Dem placed a hand on Dion's back. "You don't understand, do you?" He looked at me and something in his eyes terrified me.
"You won't… Dem, you can't possibly…"

"They are your children too!"
"Blue, I don't care. I only want you and to have you, I will do anything."
Once Dem told me that he wanted children only to bound me to him, so I could never leave. After we had children, I thought Dem changed at least that particular mindset of his. But it seemed he ever changed at all.
Dem brought his face close and pressed his lips on mine. I let him kiss me. He then kissed my earlobe and whispered, "You are right, Blue. If you leave me, I will make sure they are no longer in this world."
I had the urge to slap him. But as a good wife I was, I would not raise my hand on my husband, just like he would not raise his hand on me. Yet, I was so angry that I could do anything.
But I was also afraid.
What if he did something to the children? He did not care that they were his children. He was obsessed with me as always.
I put Dion and Demian into their cribs and came to bed. Dem took my dress off and pulled me under the comforter with him. My naked body pressed against his, but I did not feel any kind of excitement. He did not do anything either. He simply put his arm around me protectively and tightly and fell asleep. However, before he slept, he clearly whispered something into my ear.
"If you leave me, I will keep my word, baby. You know what I will do, don't you?"

Ava truly had disappeared. It was not like I suspected anything else when Evelyn said so. Dem sent knights to look for her and there was literally no trace of her.
What Dem said last night kept ringing in my ears. I kept both Dion and Demian with me all the time. I could not believe that I had to worry that their father would even think about harming them.
"Are you okay?" Evan asked. He took a look at Evelyn and said that a spell had been placed on her to connect her to Azure. Evelyn said she had been having nightmares and I believed that was the whole purpose of the spell. Azure wanted to mentally ruin her. A sick bastard.
"I suppose so," I said.
"No, you are not," Evan pressed. "You are too pale, Blue. Did you eat something?"
"Yeah, a while ago. Some soup."
"Something happened between you and your husband," he said. He was not asking me. He simply knew.
I nodded.
I was not even sure why I was telling Evan, but before I could think further, I was telling him everything.
"I told him I wanted to give myself to Azure. You know, Azure wanted me initially. I would tell him to give back Ava and take me instead. She is a child, Evan. I can't sleep thinking what might be happening to her," I said. I was almost crying.
"And Dem… He said he would…"
"He would harm the kids?"
"That he would kill them!"
Evan did not look surprised. "You know, Blue, since the moment I got to know about the relationship dynamic between the two of you, I knew something like this would happen someday. That he would use your children against you. I didn't say these things because you looked so happy with him. And really, he would not leave you alone if you leave him. I think your relationship is extremely unhealthy.
Yet, I think your opinion matters the most. Do you want to leave him?"
I shook my head. "No. I… I don't think so. It's just… I wish he would not act this way about our kids."
"He will, Blue. He always will. Can't you see that he cares for the kids only because they are yours? Think about it. In the war, he killed many children. He cares a bit more about the children he has with you is simply because you love them and you gave birth to them.
Other than that, they are what those other children meant to him.
"I do agree that you shouldn't sacrifice yourself as there is no guarantee that it will change anything. As a matter of fact, I don't think it will change anything. My suggestion is that you shouldn't do that."
"Well, I can't anyway because I have two kids and their own father will kill them if I leave," I said with a bitter laugh. "You know, I'm starting to think I shouldn't have had kids at all."
What do you think?
