The Werewolf King's Bride

Chapter 608 A Proper No

(From Briana's Perspective)

I needed to see Melissa. I wanted to know what Abel saw in her that he did not see in me.

I had good looks and I was strong. Besides, it turned out Melissa was an evil wench.

"What are you doing?" I turned hearing the voice. My whole family was sneaky. You never knew when someone was following you. Even my Mum, a human dark mage, could walk so quietly that even werewolves could not detect her.

"Mum! What are you doing here?"

"I should be the one to ask you that, Briana," Mum said. Mum only called me by that name when she was angry. Mum was rarely angry with us. So, it was serious.

"I was… I was going to see Melissa."

"Why?" she asked, crossing her arms. Mum was wearing a black dress with deep neckline. She had stopped aging at a prime moment. She looked gorgeous. I truly hoped I would stop aging at that age as well.@@novelbin@@

"Because… I was curious."

"Don't lie."

"I'm not!"

"Come with me. You have no business with Melissa. You cannot harass a woman just because you like her fiancé. And besides, Abel is so much older than you."

Although sometimes I got angry with Mum, I never disobeyed her. Sure, I hated the fact that Father only cared for Mum and not any of us as if we were not his children. You might think Mum cheated on him and had us with someone else and that was why Father never loved us. But that was far from the truth.

I could not be so sure about other couples, but at least, my parents would never even look at another person with much interest other than themselves. They were always together and could not keep their hands off each other.

"It must be so nice to have a mother so young. You two must be so close and sometimes, it must not feel like that she is your mother," Ellie, a friend of mine had said.

People might wonder so. But all of them were wrong. Mum looked young, but she was not that young mentally. She felt just like a mother, not a friend. She scolded and punished us. The same went for Father.

At least, Mum showed her love for us openly, while Father had always been kind of distant.

I did not hate Mum. I loved her. But sometimes, I felt like she loved me less than my brothers. It might not be true, but I still felt that way.

Was it because I was not calm like Dion and a genius like Demian? I was no one's favorite. Not Mum's. Definitely not Father's. Mum said she loved all of us equally. But I knew it was not true.

She cared more about Dion than any of us.

I followed Mum to my room.

"Close the door," she said.

Mum sat down on the bed, taking off her heels.

"These shoes hurt my toes," she mumbled.

"They are beautiful," I said.

"I know. Evan sent them. They are uncomfortable, but really gorgeous," she said.

"You do realize that he has feelings for you?"

"Now, Bree, we are here to talk about this thing about you," she said. "Sit down."

I did. Mum placed her foot in my lap. She sometimes did that with every one of us.

"We got Abel from the streets. He was a young guy who wanted to help his friends. He had always been kind and caring, but ferocious. I can see why you like him," she said.

"I love him, Mum!"

"Darling, we don't use the word 'love' so easily. I cannot say exactly what you feel for him. You have to understand that yourself. Today, you feel something. But then tomorrow, when you think it through, you realize something else entirely. I'm not saying it's impossible for you to love him.

It's not. All I'm saying is that it might be a simple crush, or it might even be love," she said. "And it can also be obsession."

"Mum, it's not…"

"You know what obsession looks like, don't you? Most of the time, it's one-sided. Bree, you are my daughter. But I can't be blind when it comes to you or your brothers. You wanted to hurt Melissa and thought that if Melissa was not in the picture, Abel will want you. But Bree, you are forgetting the fact that you can almost be Abel's daughter.

He doesn't see you that way. You can't be blind, my love. Especially when it comes to emotions. If you are blind, you will only hurt yourself."

Mum's voice calming and soft. I could not understand why, but I broke down in tears. Mum took her foot away from my lap and wrapped her arms around me. She smelled like a mix of rose and lavender.

"I just want him to love me!" Read new adventures at My Virtual Library Empire

"Oh my sweet girl…"

I cried for a long time. After that, Mum gave me tissues to clean my face and nose.

"Why don't you tell him how you feel? To be honest, I wouldn't. But you and I are not same. A proper 'no' might be useful," she suggested.

"You might be right. I'll do that."

"Good. I haven't seen Iris in a while. I was planning to go there tomorrow. You can come with me if you want to. You can just find him and tell him about your feelings. Don't worry.

I won't be there. Just the two of you. Then you can tell me how it went."

For a moment, I was grateful for having a mother like her. She listened to me and did not force me to give up my feelings for Abel. She was right. Probably a no from him would make these feelings go away. At least, if he said no, I could not keep on having hopes.

I gave my mother a small smile. "Alright, Mummy. I will do that."
