Chapter 89: Chapter 89 Bad News

“How am I supposed to prove it? Tell me,” Chen Ke pressed his hands on the counter and leaned his face close to Lester, demanding an answer.

“Your gaze, Chen Ke, my friend had a gaze sharp as a knife. With a single glare, he could make those who overestimated themselves shrink back obediently. And you, Chen? Let’s see if your eyes are as sharp as his,” Lester said.

This was what you asked for.

A red aura of killing intent rose from behind Chen Ke. He noticed that the color of the aura was more intense than before. With a fierce glare, the aura surged towards Lester, and to avoid being too harsh, Chen Ke deliberately held back quite a bit.

Even so, the aura still hit Lester hard. His expression changed abruptly, his cane slipped, and he tumbled to the ground.

Chen Ke hurried around the counter and helped him up.

...

A few minutes later.

Regaining his composure, Lester sat behind his counter, sipping coffee and resting with his eyes closed, his mind still unsettled.

“Chen Ke, what’s your background?” Lester’s voice trembled slightly.

“People who play tough usually keep that a secret,” Chen Ke said with a smile as he sat aside.

“You make a good point, Chen. That suit has finally found its next owner after three years. Come, let me take your measurements,” Lester put down his coffee cup, picked up his cane, and with Chen Ke, walked into the fitting room behind the shop.

Chen Ke took off his jacket, revealing the gun holster underneath his clothes. Lester wasn’t surprised by the sight of firearms; carrying guns was quite common in the United Federation, provided you had a gun license.

Of course, Lester wouldn’t inquire about the gun license. He took a tape measure and quickly and efficiently measured Chen Ke’s chest, shoulders, height, and legs.

“My friend was taller than you, so I’ll need to alter the suit size. You won’t be able to take it today,” Lester explained.

“No problem, here’s my phone number. Call me when it’s ready, and I’ll come to pick it up,” Chen Ke responded.

“No problem, Chen Ke. Off the record, we could become friends. You know, from time to time, I have some business that might be fitting for a tough character like you…” Lester suggested, with a hint of underhanded dealings.

“Oh…” Chen Ke roughly guessed what he meant.

“Here’s my phone number; you’ll find it useful. If you ever need a new suit or anything of that sort, feel free to contact me,” Lester called Chen Ke and left his number on Chen Ke’s phone.

Chen Ke said goodbye to Lester and stepped out of the store. Unexpectedly, buying a suit had led to such an unusual encounter. He wondered what Lester was all about, but it was certain that the “business” he mentioned was more or less on par with being a postman…

Chen Ke’s Nokia E63 vibrated cheerfully in his pocket. Pulling it out, he saw it was a call from Pihom.

“Chen Ke, come to the gun shop, it’s Bain,” Pihom said succinctly before hanging up.

After receiving Hainerd’s phone, Pihom had handed it to the postal service’s intelligence expert, Bain. It seemed Bain had found something.

Chen Ke took a cab to the gun shop, arriving at 3:30 in the afternoon.

A group of people were gathered in the safe house’s planning room, a building blueprint held up by magnets on a small blackboard.

Pihom, Priskin, Hall, and Lucina were discussing something.

“Where’s Bain?” Chen Ke approached the door but didn’t see any unfamiliar faces.

“Bain usually doesn’t show up in person, but he’ll communicate with us via radio,” Pihom answered.

Chen Ke found a spot to sit and waited for someone to fill him in.

“Bain cracked Hainerd’s phone. He discovered that the phone had been connected to a USB at some location,” Hall came over and handed Chen Ke a can of beer.

You can tell just from a USB connection? Chen Ke was surprised.

“And the connection time was before Hainerd’s team went on their mission… which concerns us,” Pihom said.

Chen Ke pulled the tab on the can, took a gulp of beer, and checked the underside of the tab—no prize.

“What are you suggesting…?” Chen Ke asked.

“It’s too early to jump to conclusions. There’s definitely something fishy going on,” Hall replied.

Chen Ke looked at them, their expressions all very complex.

Maybe Hainerd had defected.

Chen Ke didn’t say it out loud, he knew that was what everyone was thinking.

“Why don’t we go have a look? Where was that phone connected?” Chen Ke asked.

Priskin knocked on the blackboard, they knew not only where it had been connected, but also had gotten their hands on the building’s blueprints.

Lucina toyed with her large dagger, looking as if deep in thought.

“When do we set off?” Chen Ke asked straightforwardly.

“I’m thinking tonight…” Pihom suggested.

“Let’s go now, don’t try to stop me.” Lucina thrust her dagger into its sheath and pushed past everyone out of the planning room.

Chen Ke was bewildered, unable to understand why Lucina was acting so out of character.

Hall rushed out after her, and Priskin shrugged his shoulders and followed as well.

“Hainerd and Lucina, you’ve heard her analogy about teammates before, Chen Ke,” Pihom shook his head.

“Like a lump of differently colored clay… Fuck… Was her calmness earlier all an act?” Chen Ke suddenly understood.

“Keep an eye on her for me, she’s not one to be impulsive, but this time it’s different, consider it a favor for me,” Pihom said.

“I promise you, Pihom,” Chen Ke got up and also left the planning room.

In the armory, the four of them were checking their weapons, this operation was merely for reconnaissance, so they needed to avoid gunfire at all costs, thus everyone only carried silenced pistols.

Hall additionally strapped on four portable body bags, just in case they were forced to kill anyone, they could stuff the bodies into the bags, put them in the car, and burn them at an appropriate place.

“If Hainerd has really turned, I’ll personally chop off his dick,” Lucina said, while loading bullets into the magazine.

“What do you say, Mad Fak?” she suddenly looked up, asking Chen Ke.

“Uh?” Chen Ke was taken aback, not knowing how to respond.

Chen Ke looked towards Hall and Priskin, both of whom were busy loading bullets to avoid Chen Ke’s gaze.

“Promise me, Mad Fak, you will never betray us! Never!” Lucina demanded, staring hard.

“As long as you stop giving people nicknames… Lucina, and also, chopping off dicks isn’t a good habit… I’ll wait for you guys outside,” Chen Ke did not wish to argue with Lucina at that moment and slowly exited the armory.

The van was still parked in the yard, though today it was a white one, probably to avoid the attention of the County Police, and the driver was no longer that panicky young man, but a very calm and collected old master.

The four got into the van, and it slowly started up.

This time’s operation was in Opportunity City’s Deep Anchor District by the port, where there were beautiful beaches and rich sea-view villas.

Hainerd’s phone had been connected to a computer in a dockside house before, even if the other side might have deleted everything from the computer, the postal workers wouldn’t rest until they had seen it with their own eyes.

In the van, Priskin spread out the map, reconfirming the target and the plan of action.

This dock usually wasn’t too busy, as Opportunity City wasn’t a port trading city, so most of the docks were unoccupied, even during the day, there shouldn’t be too many security personnel.

This mission required stealth, since the time was during the day and the dock was close to a residential district, any gunfight could easily draw the attention of the County Police and alarm any potential enemies.

“It’s not just about Hainerd, it’s most important to figure out who exactly wants to screw us over,” said Hall firmly.

“No problem, we split up and enter from different directions, use the radio if anything comes up,” Chen Ke said.

Priskin distributed handheld radios with earpieces to everyone.

“Keep your emotions in check, Lucina, even if that thing really happened…” Hall said.

“I know, Hall, if it really happened, that guy is dead meat,” Lucina said angrily.
