Chapter 486: Chapter 287: Great Harvest (Part 1)_1
The lady at the door immediately showed a disgusted expression.
This expression satisfied Gong Gong’s heart, and his interest was piqued once again.
She took a step forward, and the Ghost lady stepped back, stopping only when she reached the wall behind her.
Pressing the Ghost lady against the wall, Gong Gong looked up at the person in front of him and said with a wicked smile, “Madam, what exactly is it that you want from me?”
“My young lady, she…”
“I’m not asking about your young lady, I’m asking about you. Are you really telling me you have nothing to do with me? Of course, even if you don’t, my door is always open to you.”
...
“I…”
After kicking Gong Gong aside, the Military Governor stepped in front of the Ghost lady, not forgetting to look disdainfully at Gong Gong, “We’ve started the side quest now, don’t bring your pointless hobbies here!”
“You’re just jealous that someone else is getting the girl and it’s getting to you, suffering worse than death!”
“Shut up, we’re on a mission now. Don’t forget, I’m your little mama, you have to listen to me.”
“Damn, you’re using the little mama card to press me now!”
But the Military Governor had a point, so Gong Gong had no choice but to follow his arrangement, setting off with the Ghost lady toward the Ghost Bride’s location.
At this time, it was the beginning of evening, and all was silent except for the Watchman’s distant, ethereal voice, which sounded almost like a soul-summoning chant.
Big red lanterns hung above the door, their radiant glow resembling billowing red steam, making one’s scalp tingle.
The people on the street looked more like ghosts than humans, hunching like quails, wrapped in clothing as white as shrouds, moving silently along the road.
Several people stood beside a sedan chair on the side of the road. The sedan looked quite new, but only on closer inspection did it become apparent that these were not real people.
Each paper doll wore a ghastly smile, with eyes painted on their faces staring woodenly ahead, and their cheeks bearing an unnatural blush.
The intense atmosphere had the viewers in the live broadcast holding their breath, staring fixated at the screen.
To lighten the mood, one viewer said, “In ‘God of Cookery’, there are quite a lot of quests like this. After all, ‘God of Cookery’ is a culinary game with an immortal martial arts backdrop, so it’s normal to have some god and ghost elements. No need to be scared, guys, this is standard procedure.”
“We all get the logic, but the problem is, this game is made by Fang Cheng Studio! Their horror games can literally scare you to death.”
“Exactly, Gong Gong, are you already scared out of your mind? You can cry out now if you want, we won’t laugh.”
“Yes, yes, just let it out. Mix a bit of horror with naughty elements — it’s common sense.”
Seeing the live chat, Gong Gong realized that these viewers were all a bunch of cheeky rascals.
Clearly scared to death, yet stubbornly refusing to admit it, they seemed to be giving themselves good advice, when in fact each was just searching for an excuse for their own cowardice.
Getting directly into the sedan chair, Gong Gong spoke to the Ghost lady ahead, “Let’s set off. And, madam, are you really unwilling to sit in the same sedan with me? The moonlight tonight is quite beautiful.”
The Ghost lady holding the oil-paper umbrella floated ahead, not wanting to deal with Gong Gong.
Once Gong Gong was seated in the sedan, the paper figures lifted it and began to drift lightly toward the distance.
Although they were paper figures, their steps were steady. The paper attendants moved in unison, so smooth that there was barely any sensation in the sedan.
A paper figure appeared out of nowhere, holding a lantern in front and humming an unknown tune; the sound was woeful, the singing plaintive, and it tugged at the heartstrings of those who heard it.
Listening to the sound, the viewers in the live broadcast grew even more terrified, feeling as if the number of people in their rooms had increased.
Unsure of how long they had traveled, the sedan finally stopped.
As the curtains of the sedan were drawn back, the scenes outside finally came into view for the audience.
The dilapidated ancient house stood eerily silent, with only the faint sound of opera somewhere in the background; red lanterns hung on either side of the door, their bloody hues dyeing the place a vivid scarlet.
The brazier that the new bride was to step over still burned quietly at the entrance of the courtyard, and two paper figures acting as doormen stood at the gate, their faces frozen in harmless smiles, stiffly welcoming arriving guests.
The courtyard was full, but there was an eerie hush; the large yard was filled with tables and chairs and each one had a guest seated, though not a word was spoken among them.
Upon closer inspection, it was apparent these were all paper figures.
Compared to the servile paper figures, these guests looked more lifelike and moved more smoothly, but that made the inhuman vibe even stronger.
Even through the screen, one could feel the desolation of the scene. The more lively the surroundings appeared, the more intense the viewers’ inner terror became.
“Gong Gong, stop playing, let’s just play some wholesome games that are good for the body and soul,” a viewer suggested.
“Why?” Gong Gong asked with a puzzled look, “I think this place is quite interesting.”
“Exactly, exactly,” Tai Yin chimed in, “Look, the food on the tables looks really tasty.”
“Are you sure you’ll still be alive to go back after eating that?”
“Eating anything here will only harm you!”
“Tai Yin, although you’ve always been the comedy relief, at this moment, we’d prefer if you were a little more scared and ran away!”
Reading the comments in the live broadcast, the trio still couldn’t understand what everyone was so afraid of.
To an Artifact Spirit, the situation here wasn’t really a big deal at all.
They were different from humans. The presence of the paper figures didn’t trigger the uncanny valley effect for them; seeing paper figures was no different from seeing real people for them.
What do you think?
