Tacro served Su Lu freshly sliced white bread, grilled fish, skewers, and fine wine, standing respectfully at the side.@@novelbin@@

“Do you have a question?”

While leisurely cutting his fish, Su Lu casually asked.

“The teacher seems to have taken a keen interest in that young noble woman and her attendant….”

Tacro responded honestly, with a trickle of cold sweat down his back.

He knew of his teacher’s indifference.

In this world, injuries and death are commonplace.

Tacro had witnessed plenty since following his teacher.

...

Not once had he seen him intervene.

The only exception seems to have been Miss Ilya.

No, perhaps it’s also me.

Tacro quietly whispered to himself.

“Hmm…”

After taking a sip of wine, Su Lu replied, “I believe they too possess talent.

Just like you, they have the potential to become ‘magicians’!”

“Magician’s talent?”

A glint emerged in Tacro’s eyes.

In his mind, a voice constantly urged him to gain more knowledge and follow a path to greater strength.

Bang!

Just then, the inn’s door was pushed open.

Ilya ran in, panting: “I found him…

the Turing Scholar!”

“Oh?

So, you’ve come?”

Putting down his cutlery, Su Lu displayed no surprise.

Young men and women faced with a transcendent power, are often unable to resist their curiosity.

This was even more true for Ilya.

“I want to learn…

I want to learn ‘runeology’!”

Ilya bowed sincerely, “Scholar, please teach me!”

Behind her, Phil also followed suit and bowed.

His eyes shimmered with desire.

“You want to be a ‘magician’ too?”

Su Lu laughed, tease hidden in his deep gaze.

“Magician?

What’s that?” Ilya asked curiously.

“The so-called magicians,” Su Lu began, “refer to those who study the manipulation of the Mysterious power.

“That’s right, I want to master the transcendent force and become a magician!

And so does Phil…” Ilya said hastily.

“Oh?”

Su Lu observed the two, especially their baggage with an inscrutable smile, “You didn’t run away from home, did you?”

“In pursuit of magic, we fear nothing!”

Ilya’s face flushed red, but she replied resolutely.

“Then you may end up disappointed…

Studying magic is very expensive.

It costs a lot of money,” Su Lu shrugged.

“No problem…

I brought money.”

Ilya opened her bundle triumphantly.

Inside was a jewelry box.

As she opened it, a range of dazzling treasures immediately caught everyone’s attention in the inn.

‘Such an inexperienced little girl…’

Upon noticing people’s greedy eyes, Su Lu sighed to himself.

“Alright…

These academic fees just about cover your apprenticeship.

Follow me!”,

He stood up and left the hall.

Ilya and Phil hurried to follow.

The group of four disappeared into the darkness, and before long, the sounds of commotion arose from behind.

“Miss!”

Phil drew his longsword, prepared to fight.

“Now, let me show you the power of a real magician!”

With a slight chuckle, Su Lu spoke, “As magic apprentices, you’ll only need to learn three things—Vormont language, runeology, and meditation!”

“Among these, meditation strengthens your spiritual energy, which is the foundation of everything.

Vormont language can stir the Mysterious Power in nature while runeology helps to guide and regulate that power…”

As he raised his hand, Su Lu traced several glowing symbols in the air.

Suddenly, a mysterious fog appeared, moving to cover the area behind them.

The flames on the torches were instantly swallowed by the fog.

Immediately, screams followed, suggesting that there were beasts looming within the fog.

“Is this magic?”

With wide-open eyes, Phil gazed in awe.

He had witnessed the miracle of healing using this power before, but this was his first look at its destructive capabilities!

“Our spirit is the commander and the Mysterious Power is the soldier!”

Ilya’s eyes shone brightly.

“With magic, you can unleash fire and lightning, summon all kinds of beasts, turn enemies into rabbits or lambs, create marvels, and even predict the future…

you can do anything!”

Su Lu concluded, “In other words… If you make it to the end of this journey, you’ll be a god!”

“God!”

The expressions on the faces of Ilya, Phil, and Tacro were filled with bewilderment.

The term felt strangely familiar to them.

A voice echoed in their minds.

Divine?

I must reach it!

After officially starting to study ‘magic’, Ilya realized what Su Lu meant when he said that learning magic is costly.

Learning magic does not simply cost money, it costs a lot of money!

After taking Ilya and Phil as his apprentices, Su Lu secluded himself with them in a random valley, building a magic laboratory to begin teaching them the art of meditation.

While the training to boost spiritual power was ongoing, the study of language and runeology was also added to the mix.

All three were talented individuals.

When their spiritual energy had reached the ‘magic apprentice’ standard and they had each learned their first spell under Su Lu’s guidance, Ilya found herself irresistibly drawn to the power of magic.

Despite it being a mere magical trick – Illumination,

the sight of the glowing orb in her hand had left Ilya utterly fascinated.

However, it also marked the beginning of her nightmare.

According to Tutor Turing, ‘magic apprentices’ lack significant spiritual power.

Hence, spell casting requires the assistance of various materials.

This includes pure gemstones, blood and claws of beasts, and even odd aromatic spices.

Additionally, a significant amount of time is spent on research and experimentation, with the aim of finding materials best suited to their spellcasting.

This undoubtedly is a costly endeavor, immensely so!

The vast amount of money Ilya took from home would be more than enough for her to buy plenty of land anywhere in the Empire, living like a noblewoman.

However, once invested into the endless pit of magic, it began to reduce at a visible rate.

“Teacher… to what extent must one reach to cast spells without materials…”

One day, during a lesson, Ilya finally gathered the courage to ask the question: “As an official magician?”

“Not exactly…”, Su Lu replied, “Magicians are classified into different levels according to their strength, starting from a level one junior magic apprentice, comparable to a superstring warrior.

A level two is a mid-level magic apprentice, comparable to a level two superstring warrior.

A level three would be a senior magic apprentice, comparable to a level three.

And level four would be an official magician, on par with a ‘hero’.

Even for official magic users, spellcasting often requires the assistance of materials.

Though the dependency on them reduces significantly, and the requirements become less stringent…”

“Perhaps, only when one reaches a legendary stage, like the Mercenary Emperor, can one cast spells without any materials… I call that stage… Magic Tutor!”
