Chapter 129 - Cultural Festival 9 - The First Night
In the evening, Glenn asked me to attend a social gathering with the representatives of each country. Having interrupted Grantz when he was trying to say something during the day, it was difficult to refuse.
When I went to the central plaza to see the advanced faculty members' presentations, Glenn and the others had already gathered. I wondered if they really had been guiding the cultural festival all day long.
"Oh, Aoi-kun."
Glenn called me, raising both his hands. Middleton and the others standing next to him also looked at me.
"It's almost time for the presentation, isn't it?”
When I said that and entered the circle, Middleton nodded and opened his mouth.
"Ah. I believe it’s Fore-dono who will be the final presenter of the first day. I am looking forward to it."
"Was he the advanced faculty member for fire magic?"
"Oh, that's right. He should also have been a Count from the Maple Leaf Holy Empire."
With that, the conversation between the royals and the high-ranking nobles began. While glancing at them, Rhea came next to me.
"Aoi-sensei. I heard that Rox will also be giving a presentation."
When Rhea quietly asked me in a small voice, I nodded lightly and answered.
"Rox-kun will be giving a presentation with Shenly-san and the others in the north plaza on the afternoon of the final day."
"The final day, huh. I'm looking forward to it."
As Rhea and I were having that conversation, the last bell of the day rang from the school building. Everyone’s gaze naturally turned towards the centre of the plaza.
In the silent venue, Fore slowly came out onto the plaza. The same usual outfit, the same usual expression.
Fore looked around at everyone lightly and opened his mouth.
"I am Fore Pern Roses, an advanced faculty member. Now, I will begin my presentation on fire magic."
Explaining that with a politer tone and more gestures than usual, Fore placed the palms of both hands up in front of his chest. It resembled the actions of a surgeon that one might see in television dramas.
Come to think of it, I hadn't heard what kind of presentation Fore would be doing. He had mostly been holed up in his laboratory, so perhaps he would be showing off some original magic.
As I was thinking that, Fore opened his mouth, as if he had seen through me.
"…What I will be presenting this time will be a magic that I just recently developed. Now then, I will begin."
Saying that, Fore began his incantation.
"Ho! Original magic, is it!"
"As expected of an advanced faculty member."
Voices of surprise and admiration could be heard from the venue at Fore's statement. It seemed that original magic was not something one could see very often.
I simply thought that everyone was just refraining from showing off their original magic.
And, while I was thinking about various things, Fore used earth magic.
"Earth Barrier, Sand Wall."
What activated was earth magic. While everyone looked on to see what would happen, a wall that seemed to be more than a meter thick was created at the centre of the plaza.
Voices of small surprise were heard in response, but Fore silently touched the earth wall with his hand to check it, and then looked around at the audience gathered in the plaza.
"Generally, fire magic, when blocked by thick walls of earth or rock, changes its direction of travel. Also, as a characteristic of fire magic, when you narrow the range to which the effect applies, the distance and temperature tend to decrease. Conversely, if you make the range wide and the temperature high, the flame will become more active and produce a higher effect."
When Fore explained that, several people nearby showed signs of nodding. Apparently, that was common knowledge for fire magic. After looking around as if confirming everyone's reactions, Fore opened his mouth again.
"However, that common knowledge was wrong. My magic will prove that starting now."
He declared that with confidence, and the audience clamoured loudly.
Fore began his incantation for fire magic this time. Listening to the content of the incantation, it seemed that he was referring to something I had taught him.
After returning from Maple Leaf, I had confirmed the healing magic with Fore and Glenora, and during that time, Fore had asked me about other magic. It was at that time that I told him about cutting the stairs in the audience chamber with fire magic. Apparently, he had grasped the essence of it just from that overview.
It was amazing that he had brought it to the point of a presentation in just one month. Imagining Fore's efforts, I watched with admiration when the incantation was finally completed.
In front of Fore, who had put both hands forward, a faint red flame was born and gradually condensed into a small sphere. Fire magic has a strong flashy image, but the venue fell silent at its quiet beginning.
Fore pointed that small red sphere of flame at the wall.
"…Flame Heat Ray, Flame Raise."
Immediately after quietly stating the name of the magic, a thin red light extended from Fore's hand. The light penetrated the wall, advancing from right to left.
And, the instant it passed through from one end of the wall to the other, the thick wall of earth split cleanly in two, and the upper half fell to the ground. The audience raised voices of shock as they saw the remains of the wall rolling on the ground with a thud.
"How incredible...!"
"In the face of that magic, even the usual castle walls would be torn down in an instant!"
"There's no doubt that any armour would be unable to defend against it."
Such voices could be heard from all over the place. The representatives of each country who were watching Fore's presentation beside me widened their eyes in surprise, unable to find any words. Only Diageo was looking at me with a suggestive gaze, though.
However, Fore's magic was concentrated to about within two meters of his hand, and the way he used it was like he created a flame with one hand, and used the other hand to gather wind to adjust the power and shape of the flame, so it is something similar to, but not the same as, my magic.
I wasn't particularly concerned, thinking that, but after the magic was completed, Fore looked around at everyone and then gave a final greeting.
"This magic was completed after receiving a hint from an advanced faculty member named Aoi. On the final day, Aoi will be giving a presentation in the central plaza on behalf of the headmaster. I am also looking forward to it, so please, everyone, come and watch."
Saying that, Fore gave a bow.
As I was watched Fore, who received a huge round of applause, I felt Diageo’s gaze piercing my profile.
