Vol. 1 - Chapter 250 - Shocked
"By the way, HuMing, what's your relationship with Kang Xin?"
Xia XiaoXi hadn't shared any details about HuMing with Xia Chen. All he knew was that HuMing had come to the capital to search for his biological parents.
But since HuMing refused to reveal any details, Xia Chen was left completely in the dark.
Kang Xin didn’t respond to Xia Chen’s question. She simply leaned against HuMing’s arm, gazing out the window, lost in thought.
Meanwhile, HuMing explained seriously,
"Kang Xin has been with me since childhood. To me, she is family."
"Family, huh..."
Xia Chen carefully considered the meaning behind HuMing’s words. It was obvious that HuMing cared a lot about Kang Xin.
Just looking at their current dynamic—HuMing even brought her along when heading home, and Kang Xin followed him without saying a word—it was clear their relationship wasn’t as simple as he made it seem.
More likely, HuMing might actually like Kang Xin!
Once this thought surfaced, it refused to go away.
People are more inclined to believe conclusions they arrive at themselves rather than truths forcefully told to them.
"Where are you headed, young man?"
The driver in the front seat asked HuMing. After HuMing gave him an address, the driver’s expression changed instantly. He couldn’t help but glance at HuMing a couple more times through the rearview mirror, clearly shocked by what he had just heard.
As the Xia family's driver, he naturally knew where that address was.
But as far as he knew, the young master had never interacted with the Gu family before, and he had certainly never heard of a new young master appearing in the Gu family.
HuMing’s presence was puzzling, but the driver wisely chose to keep his thoughts to himself.
After all, this was a matter between the young masters. Besides, having a connection with the Gu family wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The car sped down the road as Xia Chen continued questioning HuMing about his past. Naturally, he didn’t forget to ask about Han ShuYi’s fate.
"Our Xia family has some ties to the Han family, but I never expected Han ShuYi to be that kind of person. To end up in such a miserable state in the end—it’s really something to sigh about."
Xia Chen wasn’t particularly sympathetic toward Han ShuYi. He was just lamenting the fact that someone like that came from the Han family.
And the true culprit behind all this was definitely the one pulling the strings from the shadows. If Han ShuYi had chosen to cooperate with HuMing from the start, Xia Chen figured the outcome wouldn’t have been any worse than what actually happened.
Who knows what was going through Han ShuYi’s mind back then? Maybe he was blinded by how outstanding HuMing was.
"HuMing, have you gone to see Han ShuYi since?"
"I have. He didn’t look like he was in a good mental state."
"I see..." Xia Chen turned his head to look out the window, lost in thought.
The car continued on, quickly arriving at HuMing’s destination.
But when Xia Chen saw where HuMing lived, he completely froze. His mouth fell open, his face filled with disbelief.
"HuMing, this is where you live?"
Seeing Xia Chen looking as if his jaw was about to hit the floor, HuMing chuckled lightly and replied,
"Yeah, this is my place in the capital. Xia Chen, it was nice meeting you today."
HuMing stepped out of the car, smiling at Xia Chen.
Xia Chen, still in shock, didn’t recover for a long time.
"Young master, are you alright?"
"My jaw hurts from keeping my mouth open for too long." Xia Chen rubbed his chin, leaning lifelessly against the car door.
He had no idea how to even evaluate HuMing anymore.
With a place like that, Xia Chen was pretty sure barely anyone in their school could afford such a residence.
Logically speaking, there was no way the Han family could have bought him a place that expensive!
"Uncle Yong, do you think HuMing is comfortable living alone in a place like that?"
"Young master, that’s not just any place—that’s the Gu family’s villa district."
Uncle Yong, the driver, wasn’t sure what to say to his young master. What kind of normal person lived alone in a villa? Besides, everyone knew that the entire area was basically Gu family property.
It was clear his young master really didn’t pay attention to these kinds of things.
Unlike Uncle Yong, who just felt helpless, Xia Chen was hit with a wave of realization. His eyes widened, his brain struggling to process it all.
How was HuMing connected to the Gu family? And judging by everything, he seemed to be someone important within the Gu family!
But then why, at school, did HuMing and Gu YunZhou never act particularly close?
"Wait, wait, wait—how did HuMing end up with the Gu family? Wasn’t he supposed to be investigating his origins?"
Suddenly, Xia Chen realized something crucial.
HuMing had never actually said where he lived. And in class, he had always emphasized how dangerous this whole situation was.
Yet now, he is with the Gu family…
Which meant HuMing’s identity was tied to the Gu family?!
"Young master, I think it’d be wise to build a good relationship with this HuMing. Since he’s appearing at the Gu residence, it’s likely that the Gu family has already acknowledged him. Strengthening ties with him could be beneficial for our connections with the Gu family in the future."
"Build a good relationship? If anything, that’s something Xiao Xi should handle!"
Xia Chen pouted, clearly not thrilled.
…
When HuMing arrived home, Gu ZhouTing was seated in the main hall, holding a newspaper.
Though, it seemed he was holding it upside down.
"Grandpa, I’m back."
"Hmm? You’re back. How was school today? No trouble, I hope?" Gu ZhouTing set down the newspaper and looked at HuMing, scanning him for any signs of injury.
"Everything went fine. I met a friend’s older brother today, so there wasn’t much drama in class."
HuMing put down his school bag as Kang Xin patted his shoulder, indicating she was heading to her room.
HuMing nodded in agreement.
Seeing Kang Xin leave, Gu ZhouTing became even more satisfied with this little maid.
He did, in fact, want to have a private chat with HuMing.
"Come, HuMing, sit down and tell me about your day."
The two of them sat together, discussing everything that had happened.
The setting sun cast golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows, stretching their shadows long across the floor, filling the room with warmth.
"HuMing, how was life in the Han family? Why did that fool of a brother of mine place you there instead of keeping you by his side?"
Gu ZhouTing still couldn’t understand why his younger brother hadn’t raised HuMing directly under his care—it would’ve been much more convenient.
HuMing looked at Gu ZhouTing and was silent for a moment before replying,
"Grandfather said that if I stayed by his side, I wouldn’t be able to adapt to life in the Gu family. And coincidentally, the Han family was a suitable place for me. There wasn’t too much scheming, but it was still a semi-prominent family."
"...Did he swap out the Han family’s real child?!"
Gu ZhouTing’s brows furrowed deeply, clearly displeased by the idea.
But HuMing shook his head before finally saying,
"No. Someone did it on purpose."
