Vol. 1 - Chapter 252 - Subtle Turmoil
HuMing could tell that Gu YunZhou highly regarded Gu ZhaoChuan. Of course, their relationship could also have influenced his opinion.
That said, HuMing didn’t think Gu YunZhou would lie to his grandfather about something like this—after all, it was something that could be easily verified.
With that in mind, HuMing concluded that Gu ZhaoChuan hadn’t spent his time in the Gu family idly.
And from the looks of it, he had no intention of conceding so easily.
Sitting on the sofa, HuMing mulled over his next course of action.
…
After dinner, HuMing returned to his room, but instead of washing up right away, he changed into a new set of clothes.
He’d said that he would find Ye QiuXue today. The only thing was, that girl didn’t even know he had come to the capital, much less that he was staying here. If she saw him, she’d definitely be surprised.
Before coming, HuMing had already looked into Ye QiuXue’s school schedule. Unlike JingDu II, JingDu III required students to stay for night study sessions. That meant if he left the Gu residence now, the timing would be just right.
She probably still thought he was joking when he said he’d come.
Knock knock.
A knock came at the door. HuMing slipped his phone into his pocket before opening it.
Standing outside was Gu YunZhou, already changed into his pajamas. His handsome face carried a sense of urgency, but the moment he saw HuMing dressed in casual clothes, he quickly put two and two together.
“Brother Ming, are you heading out?”
Just a moment ago, he was calling him ‘Cousin’, and now it was already ‘Brother Ming’.
This kid got familiar real fast.
HuMing didn’t mind Gu YunZhou. The only question was whether Gu ZhaoChuan had sent him to get close to him.
“Mm. Meeting up with a friend tonight.”
“I see. I actually wanted to ask you about your relationship with Xia Chen. He and I don’t usually get along, so I was curious about what he’s thinking.”
HuMing’s hand rested on the doorknob. He studied Gu YunZhou and slowly asked,
“YunZhou, what do you think of ZhaoChuan?”
“Huh? Brother ZhaoChuan? He’s a great older brother. At home, he’s always helping my sister and me solve problems. More importantly, he’s outstanding—someone I look up to.”
At the mention of Gu ZhaoChuan, Gu YunZhou’s expression was one of deep respect.
“You’re saying ZhaoChuan has always been helping you two out?”
“Yeah. Brother ZhaoChuan says it’s his duty as an older brother. That’s actually part of the reason why YunQin has become so spoiled—he’s always indulging her.”
Speaking of his sister, Gu YunZhou looked exasperated. But at this point, there wasn’t much he could do. Though, he did feel that Brother ZhaoChuan was a little too indulgent with her.
Listening to Gu YunZhou, HuMing nodded.
He could understand Gu ZhaoChuan’s mindset. Perhaps, in the beginning, he had been acutely aware of his position in the family. That fear of exposure must have driven him to prove himself constantly through action.
He must have been afraid that his place in the Gu family would become unstable if he didn't contribute.
But now, Gu ZhaoChuan’s mentality has clearly changed.
‘He won’t be easy to deal with.’
HuMing shut the door and watched Gu YunZhou’s retreating figure.
He silently turned around and stepped out.
…
“So late at night, and HuMing’s still heading out?”
By the window, Gu WeiJun watched as Lan Jun drove HuMing away, his expression tinged with surprise.
As far as he knew, HuMing had no relatives in the capital. So why would he go out this late?
“Hey, let him do whatever he wants. HuMing didn’t grow up in the Gu family. Staying here for too long might make him feel stifled.”
“True. Second Uncle left the Gu family a long time ago, so it’s normal for HuMing to be unfamiliar with it. Still, I’ve always wondered why Second Uncle was driven out in the first place. Father never told me.”
Leaning against the window, Gu WeiJun watched as HuMing disappeared into the distance.
For some reason, he didn’t actually mind HuMing’s return. In fact, he even felt it was a good thing for the Gu family.
Compared to the others, HuMing seemed to possess a different kind of spirit.
“The younger generation’s problems should be solved by the younger generation. That said, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Second Brother’s wife. Even with HuMing’s return, she didn’t show up.”
“According to WeiYi, her condition has worsened. It’s all tied to what happened back then. If she hadn’t been delayed while delivering those documents, she would’ve gotten medical attention in time. Things wouldn’t have ended up like this.”
“Let’s just hope for the best.” Mo QingXia clasped her hands together in silent prayer before lying back down.
…
Gu ZhaoChuan held his phone, staring out at the city lights.
He knew that dealing with HuMing wouldn’t be easy. But that didn’t mean it was impossible.
HuMing was undoubtedly trying to uncover the truth about his identity.
And besides himself, only the people behind him knew the real answer.
Of course, he couldn’t expose it outright. Who knew what Second Uncle had already told HuMing?
More importantly, there was still one crucial person they hadn’t found.
“That nurse… After all these years, there’s still no trace of her?”
“A lead? The lead you want is probably six feet under by now. If what HuMing said was true, then it means Second Uncle knew what I did back then. But why didn’t he say anything? Even I can’t figure that out. My guess? It has something to do with why he left the Gu family in the first place.”
“So what now? HuMing’s focus is entirely on the Gu family. We need to divert his attention.”
“That’s why all these years of enjoying Gu family resources are finally going to pay off. Don’t let me down.”
The voice on the other end chuckled, full of amusement.
Gu ZhaoChuan ended the call, his gaze sharp.
He understood—his real battle with HuMing was only just beginning.
Turning his head, his eyes fell on the family portrait beside him.
These were the people he was most familiar with.
And the people who were furthest from him.
As long as he got rid of HuMing, he could truly become HuMing.
He could become one of them.
“HuMing, why did you come back?”
“To take back what was yours?”
“But I won’t let you. Because it belongs to me now!”
