Vol. 1 - Chapter 277 - Deal with the Devil
Gu WeiYi’s words laid everything bare—the pros and cons, the stakes involved, all made crystal clear.
The Gu family and the Bai family had long shared a cooperative relationship. Even back when the Gu family was embroiled in internal chaos, it was Bai XingQi who had stepped in to help. The Bai family’s ability to maintain its foothold in the capital now was, to a large extent, thanks to the Gu family’s continued support.
In light of this alliance, it wasn’t surprising at all that the Gu family would refrain from interfering in this matter.
HuMing stayed silent, while Gu WeiYi went on.
“I understand what you mean. But some matters are simply beyond our reach. Or are you suggesting that we openly fall out with the Bai family? Do you really think my brother would ever agree to that? Back then, our Gu family owed ‘Blizzard’ a favor—if we were to flip the table on them now, it’s just not realistic.”
What Gu WeiYi said was blunt but practical. Anyone with eyes could see the partnership between the Gu family and ‘Blizzard.’ If the Gu family were to suddenly turn their back on them, who else would dare collaborate with the Gu family in the future?
When it comes to handling matters like these, profit is the only thing that truly matters.
“So you’re saying, Xia GaoWu must die?”
HuMing’s question caught Gu WeiYi off guard. But after a moment’s pause, he replied steadily.
“Unless Xia GaoWu’s willing to yield. You know as well as I do—right now, the Xia family’s riding too high. They’re even poised to shove the Bai family off their pedestal. If he’s willing to back down, perhaps the Bai family might let him go.”
‘Would they, though?’
HuMing questioned himself inwardly. Gu WeiYi’s logic was unassailable—so airtight that HuMing found himself unable to argue.
From every possible angle, Gu WeiYi’s stance was rooted in the Gu family’s interests. And just as he said: if Xia GaoWu gave up what he currently had, the Bai family might indeed spare him.
It was the most secure solution.
But it also created an inescapable loop—an unbreakable cycle where the capital remained forever under the control of these three families.
And if things stayed that way, HuMing would never be able to shift the tides, never force the hand of the shadowy figure pulling strings from behind.
Truth be told, HuMing had always suspected that this “Blizzard” was connected to the real mastermind.
This time, ‘Blizzard’ moving against Xia GaoWu might just be the crucial thread he needed to pull.
‘What should I do, then?’
Narrowing his eyes, HuMing fell deep into thought.
Meanwhile, Gu WeiYi stood up, intending to head back to his room.
“I’ll discuss this with my brother tomorrow. Perhaps we can glean an answer from the Bai family’s side.”
…
Bai YongKang stared at the phone in his hand, his fingers trembling slightly.
Back then, when he dialed this number, he thought he was seizing an opportunity—a chance to wrest control of the entire Gu family. But in the end, all he accomplished was only hurting Gu WeiYi’s wife!
The realization filled Bai YongKang with bitter regret. If only he’d struck harder, perhaps he could’ve taken out both Gu WeiYi and Gu WeiJun in one fell swoop.
But things didn’t go as planned. That incident had almost led to him being sidelined entirely by the rest of his family.
Were it not for his father’s insistence on shielding him, he might not even be in this position today—someone else, that woman, would be sitting where he was.
And that rankled. Deep down, Bai YongKang had never accepted Bai XingQi.
She wasn’t even of Bai family blood, not truly. Yet she monopolized the family’s resources, even trying to carve out her own piece of the pie.
From a young age, Bai YongKang had known—everything in the Bai family belonged to him and him alone. If Bai XingQi wanted to take something from him, he would never allow it.
But what he hadn’t expected… was for her to help the Gu family when they were at their weakest.
That was the move he hadn’t seen coming.
One decision, and Bai YongKang’s entire plan had unraveled.
He couldn’t fathom that it would be this woman who shattered his ambitions. If it weren’t for her, the Gu family would’ve been in his pocket by now!
His father kept telling him to be grateful to Bai XingQi for aiding the Bai family, but he had no idea—Bai XingQi was precisely the reason Bai YongKang ended up in this pitiful state.
He’d never forget the sight of himself being beaten so badly by Gu WeiYi, right in front of the entire capital, hospitalized and humiliated.
It was as if Gu WeiYi wanted to devour him whole.
And if Bai XingQi hadn’t stepped in to stop it, Gu WeiYi might’ve really killed him that day.
But because of that incident, he’d become the laughingstock of the city. Everyone knew about his ties to the Gu family. Even now, people believed the Bai family’s downfall was largely due to him.
He wanted revenge—against Bai XingQi, and against the entire Gu family.
He’d pay any price to get it.
With that thought, Bai YongKang dialed a number. The line connected quickly.
“Oh? Young Master Bai, what made you think of calling me today?”
“I need your help. Just like how you helped me deal with the Gu family before.”
“But before that, Young Master Bai, I have one question for you.”
“Go ahead.”
“Why do you think I never deactivated this number? You do realize, after you failed to wipe out the Gu family, I had every reason to fear retaliation. Especially from Gu WeiYi—he’s far more ruthless than his brother.”
“You’re answering my call now, aren’t you? That tells me you trust I won’t betray you. You’re not the type to cut and run—you’ll bide your time, waiting for the right moment. I’m sure of it.”
Bai YongKang was convinced the other party had ambitions to control the entire capital. Who they really were didn’t matter.
What mattered was that they could help him get what he deserved—that was enough.
This, to Bai YongKang, was the equivalent of selling his soul to the devil.
A low, rumbling laugh came through the phone. The other party didn’t refuse his offer.
“Young Master Bai, your proposition sounds tempting. But tell me—what chips do you still have left?”
“Take the entire Bai family, if that’s what you want.”
The words came out without hesitation. Revenge had consumed him entirely.
A decision that betrayed generations of his ancestors—but clearly, Bai YongKang no longer cared.
The other party laughed again.
“Young Master Bai, everyone knows Bai XingQi is the one truly holding the reins now. Your words don’t exactly hold weight.”
“Then tell me what you want. As long as it’ll make Bai XingQi and the Gu family pay, I’ll do whatever it takes!”
“Oh no, Young Master Bai. It’s easy enough to make them suffer—you simply have to destroy what they cherish most. Once everything they hold dear is in ruins, they’ll collapse on their own.”
“Then tell me—what should I do?!”
Bai YongKang was growing impatient. He wanted to see that look of despair in Bai XingQi’s eyes once more. Only then would he feel at ease.
“There’s no need for you to worry about the others. But there is one person you’ll need to handle for me—someone who’s pivotal to this entire game.”
Bai YongKang listened, his brows furrowed. But soon, his expression relaxed.
Because he realized—this person was someone he’d always intended to deal with eventually.
It was just that now, fate had conveniently handed him the opportunity.
“Don’t worry. I won’t let him walk away alive. Give me some time to prepare.”
“I’ll look forward to your good news then, Head of the Bai family.”
