Chapter 91: Path of Annihilation—United Stand

[Juliana's PoV]

Juliana stared defiantly as the commanders descended through the barrier they had just broken. They were still here, after the initial invasion. Why would this latest development of 'everybody is fucked' change anything?

Calling forth her lightning, Juliana activated her new skill Perfect Storm.

[A-Rank Active Skill: Perfect Storm – An aura of lightning encases the user. This aura raises the user's speed by 50% and applies a 15% spell damage reduction. Additionally, enemies that hit the user while encased by [Perfect Storm] have a 10% chance of being paralyzed. This aura lasts for 60 seconds. Cost: 30MP; Cooldown Duration: 3 minutes]

It cost a hefty amount of MP, but the skill also provided her with some defense while, more importantly, boosting her speed by 1.5 times. She already assumed that the commanders had an inbuilt resistance to paralysis, but if not, then that was just another bonus.

The simple fact of the matter was that she was roughly on par with one of the commanders, by her own estimates anyway. Amelia could've been too, if she knew how to fight. However, she didn't which meant that Juliana was on her own now.

'She's done quite a lot anyway.' Juliana thought, feeling a sort of admiration grow towards Amelia.

"I can see you've become even stronger than the last time we met." A familiar voice called from behind her.

'That elf punk?' She thought as the flashing light of another barrier being erected appeared ahead of her. Of course, it wouldn't last more than 5 seconds, but whoever cast the spell probably wanted to feel useful.

"Cesilion?" Another familiar voice asked. A shy, squeaky one that she knew all too well.

Juliana huffed as she saw the commanders stare at the new barrier distastefully. 10 seconds had already passed with her skill active and yet she hadn't been able to do anything with it.

It almost felt like the stupid damned elf was actively sabotaging her. Or maybe he was just incompetent.

'Perfect.'

Juliana turned with a huff to see the elf with 5 other people. Their faces were heavy set as Cesilion and 2 other cloaked mages held up their hands, sweat pouring down their face. It looked like they were giving up their very life force to keep it erected.

Behind them were 2 archers who already had their arrows nocked. Just by assessing their energy, Juliana knew they weren't all that strong. They were probably A-Rank at most.

Except for Cesilion, but he was just... different.

"Is there anything we can d-"

Amelia began before Juliana cut her off, "How did you know to come here?"

'And why not come with an actual strike force?'

Cesilion struggled to speak for a second due to all the stress the commanders caused him, but he knew reconnaissance was important. They didn't have much time to converse, but he could at least relay the important information.

"Demons weren't just attacking here but the city as well. We didn't have much defense available, as you can see..."

His voice trailed off for a second as his face turned grim.

"We're the only ones available. Everyone other raider is either in some dungeon, at the Tower of Eternity, or dead."

"So if we fail here... the city basically falls?" Amelia asked, her voice small and feeble, yet the weight of her words somehow carried through all of the surrounding chaos.

Cesilion opened his mouth to scream as the commanders answered for him. The barrier fell unceremoniously, a simple and small crack just big enough for the 4 to fly through. Before anyone could react, the other 2 mages were decapitated by a single slash from a commander.

The same one who cut through the forest with ease.

Another set his sights on Cesilion, shooting black tendrils from his fingertips. Cesilion instantly erected a smaller, more concise barrier with his left hand as he charged up some kind of fire spell in his right.

Juliana was pretty sure that Elven mages didn't know too much fire magic, but she wasn't complaining anyway. She had her own issues.

"Evaporate." The third commander declared as he held up his hand. A small ball of light formed in this hand before flying to Juliana.

It was far too fast for her to dodge, so she cast her own lightning in an attempt to destroy it. This first attempt worked, shattering the orb upon impact.

The commander simply cocked his head, saying "Evaporate."

Off to the side, she heard the screams of the 2 archers. I'm the back of her mind, she knew Amelia was alone against 2 commanders.

And she could do nothing because of this one in front of her...

...

[Elise's PoV]

"Wake up, wake up, wake up DAMN IT!!!"

She cried desperately as the 2 commanders indifferently continued their attacks. Her barriers were becoming weaker by the second.

Endless cracks made this evident, the barriers seemingly becoming nothing more than a maze. Soon, the civilians would die regardless.

For a second, Elise wondered if it would be best to just drop the barrier and focus on her offensive magic. Each and every one of the people it currently defended would die, but...

'No.'

Elise declared to herself. For the last 532 years, she had committed unspeakable crimes as she sacrificed generation after generation to these demons. Now, she had her one true chance to get her sister back.

The bastard just needed to wake up. Until then... she would do her best not to die. If he woke up to the civilians alive and well, she knew he would help her.

A soft glow of light amidst the endless darkness in her gem betrayed another reason as well.

Both of the commanders stopped their barrage for just a second so they could walk forward. The one on the right promptly resumed his barrage, casting energy balls of light that Elise could barely deflect.

The other whispered, "Why fight? You've killed these people for centuries, girl. What gives you the right to die for them?"

Elise didn't feel the blade piercing her stomach until her robe was doused in blood. Her breath grew short as she fought for any foothold in life, already feeling her barriers crumbling.

If Nick didn't wake up, like... right now...
