Chapter 99: Path of Annihilation—Final Efforts

[Juliana's PoV]

"Evaporate. "

The demon in front of her said once again, followed by a blast she could barely block with her lightning.

Across the meadow, death was everywhere. Out of everyone who had come to their aid, Cesilion was the only one left alive. Even then, he was barely holding on.

Furrowing her eyes brows, Juliana thought, 'Come on, you ugly bastard. Die already,' and then started an offensive of her own.

Summoning lightning in both of her hands, Juliana screamed as she put both hands in front of her. So much mana was collected and expelled in an instant that she felt an intense pain, as if her soul was burning. However, that only strengthened her resolve.

The air itself cracked from such an influx of energy. Infallible lightning streaked across the battlefield before directly colliding into the commander.

He had expected the attack to simply be shrugged off by his far superior armor and stats. However, to his dismay, it completely shattered his right shoulder guard and even almost completely severed his hand.

The cold, calculating gaze he had adopted for much of the fight now fell. In its absence an uncharacteristic rage formed.

Gasping for air, Juliana tried her best to collect more mana. She had already used much of it on defense just trying tk stay alive and then now, in an attempt to end at least one enemy quick.

"Evaporate!"

A shrill, harsh scream resounded through the expansive meadow as the commander narrowed his sights on Juliana. In the next second, a huge ball of light surrounded his fist, this time more of an aura than a projectile.

Whoosh!

Trees collapsed to the ground just from the impact of the commander jumping. For just a split second, Juliana saw that one of the falling trees had thwarted Amelia's attempt to dodge and that she now had a sword through her stomach.

This strengthened Juliana's resolve to the maximum, somehow causing a huge influx of mana swell inside her. Although she didn't realize it at this time, this was due to 3 factors.

The first 2 had to deal with Nick, who had just gotten an insane power boost not just from the seal of Annihilation but also his transcendent level up. Because Valkyries inherited some stats from their Progenitor, they get stronger as it does.

Additionally, Nick's Zone State [Emperor's Will] had activated because of Glynt's injuries after he taunted all the surrounding squires.

But the third was some unspeakable part of magic. One that, depending on the side, could be seen as either a miracle or damnation.

Magic is akin to fate, so obviously it would be just as fickle. Today, her will led Juliana to obtain a great boost in power.

Lightning flashed throughout the entire battlefield in an array of beautiful strikes. The entire meadow illuminated before her might before bursting in flames.

Crimson soon became the monotous color of a once vibrant, chromatic meadow. The once luscious plethora of plant life had now fallen under one common denominator: ash.

Ugyr hooted her approval in the air once she caught the scent of demon ash. With one final strike, Juliana had managed to save the day.

Good, too. Because Ugyr didn't want to have to intervene, thus admitting that Nick wasn't as promising as she thought. In all, she was very pleased with his development so far.

[Ugyr's PoV]

Ugyr flew high above the battlefield, her view completely obscured. Every now and then some stupid squire would try to obstruct her vision, but at some point they grew smarter.

Perks of unrelenting destruction. A small smile crossed Ugyr's snout as she thought of all the demons she got to kill. Not only did she have fun here, but she also got a pretty good bearing on the Valkyries' strengths and weaknesses.

Amelia was seemingly finally getting over her coward schtick, even if only a little bit. Moreover, her new armor seemed to boost her movement speed and overall agility. Kindof fitting for someone who preferred to run from her problems.

Still, Ugyr did have faith for Amelia's future.

Juliana, on the other hand, was magnificent. That last bit of lightning... was simply divine. Of course she still had a long way to go, Nick did too afterall. However, to not only go toe to toe with the elf but then to completely outclass him...

"Most impressive." Ugyr said aloud as she turned to the bloodknight behind her.

Just by looking at his armor, she knew he was one of the lower rank. This was rather unfortunate and did put a small dampener on Ugyr's mood.

Of course Nick would get Khaic, one of the better bloodknights while she got one of the weaker ones. The one levitating across from her had green armor, indicating that he was a fresh, low ranking bloodknight.

With a sigh, Ugyr zoomed through the air at a speed far past defying light, sending him to Oblivion before he even registered Ugyr's existence.

...

[Magnus's PoV]

"Glynt, what the hell are ye doing!" Sylus cried as he nocked arrow after arrow, a fruitless attempt at saving his mentor and father figure.

A small smile could be seen from Glynt as he struck his own axe, ignoring the gaping wounds the squires inflicted all over his body.

"I'm saving you 2, just like you're going to save that boy there. And this time, do better than me. Quit fighting."

With hia final, resolute statement clear, Glynt amplified his taunt to the maximum. The dozens of stragglers who still pounded at Magnus's barriers in an attempt to kill the trio now fixed their gazes on Glynt.

The sacrifice play was clear. Glynt, who was born in combat, raised in combat, would die in combat. Just like any other orc, war ran in his veins more than blood.

Even after he finally found his way out of constant battles when he saved Magnus and Sylus, Glynt still fought. His incessant need for combat, even if he had turned it into a source of good by raiding dungeons, had bled into them.

However, because they weren't orcs, because they weren't bred for combat, he believed they could break that cycle of war. The kid they saved, he could easily grow up to become self righteous and with a desire to slay monsters so that nobody suffered the same fate as him.

However, selflessness only ended with what lay right in front of Sylus and Magnus: their mentor and dear friend sacrificing himself to save them.
