Chapter 19 - 19 19 Becoming Particular
19: Chapter 19: Becoming Particular 19: Chapter 19: Becoming Particular Even though Ma Xiulian had specifically asked Li Chunhua to wash the dishes, there were many dishes and utensils used by the large family of over ten people, so Zhou Zhaodi and Zhao Mei also had to help clean up the mess on the table.
Furthermore, even though there were a lot of dishes, they were easy to wash because they weren’t very oily.
A quick rinse with well water, and then dried and put into the cupboard was all it took.
When Zhao Mei had just picked up two bowls, Helian Qiao’s eyelids twitched, and then she slowly opened her eyes, as clear as coloured glaze.
She needed to nurse as soon as she woke up.
So, Ma Xiulian said to Zhao Mei, “First daughter-in-law, stop cleaning, it’s time to feed Guibao.”
“Sure,”
Zhao Mei replied, and put the bowls back down, reaching out to hold her niece.
However, Ma Xiulian sidestepped, not letting her hold the baby, saying “Wash your hands first and wipe your chest as well.”
Everyone knows that diseases often enter through the mouth.
It’s summer, everyone sweats a lot, and we can’t be careless about what Guibao puts into her mouth.
Zhao Mei was taken aback.
When did her mother-in-law start being so particular about things?
But she couldn’t ignore her, so she nodded and fetched a basin of well water to wash her hands and chest.
Li Chunhua, while cleaning the dishes, muttered to herself in her heart: why was so much care being given to this unprofitable child?
That young girl were indeed odd.
When she finished washing the dishes and came out, she saw Helian Qiao nestled in her sister-in-law’s arms, nursing comfortably, causing her heart to sink.
This heartless little girl, not missing her own mother at all.
So, she gave Chen Xiaobao a cold look and carried the boy back to her own room, without even glancing at Sanni next to her.
Ma Xiulian saw her behaviour and was at a loss for words.
This mother’s favouritism was too obvious.
Everyone says that she, Ma Xiulian, favoured sons over daughters.
If she were to talk about it, her third daughter-in-law is the most partial to the boys.
They were both flesh and blood of her own belly, but she treasured her son and took her daughter for granted.
Ma Xiulian treated her only daughter very well.
As for her granddaughters, they were a generation apart, and there were several of them.
Naturally, she favoured the grandson who could carry on the family line even more.
But that was all in the past, this little granddaughter was now her heart and soul.
“Grandma likes our Guibao the most.”
Zhao Mei also adored this cute and pretty little niece of hers.
Staring at Helian Qiao’s chubby face, she exclaimed, “Mom, how come Guibao is so fair and beautiful?”
Her skin was so tender that she was even afraid to touch her.
She then looked at her own daughter, who, when she was born, looked just like a wrinkled old man.
Now, three months old, her skin was a little dark and yellowish, her hair and eyebrows sparse, and her facial features were not as cute and refined as her niece’s.
She wondered why during her pregnancy, she and her little siblings all ate the same food, yet the daughters they gave birth to turned out so different!
Ma Xiulian, in a matter-of-fact tone, replied, “Our Guibao is a fairy who has descended from heaven, of course, she’s beautiful!”
Knowing that even if she told the truth, no one would believe her, she spoke without feeling any pressure.
As expected, Zhao Mei figured she was just doting on her little niece.
Not sure how to respond, she fell silent again.
After a while, she then voiced out, “Mom, do you notice that there seem to be fewer mosquitoes around these past two days?”
While sitting in the courtyard enjoying the cool breeze previously, they would get bitten and form swellings all over their bodies in no time.
They had been sitting for a good while tonight, and there wasn’t a single bite on their bodies.
It was nothing short of strange.
Ma Xiulian glanced at her and with a calm demeanor, replied, “Isn’t it good that there are no mosquitoes?
We get to sleep comfortably at night.”
In her heart, she cheerfully thought: See, even the mosquitoes dare not suck the divine blood of her granddaughter, Guibao.
What do you think?
