Chapter Eight Hundred Seventy-One
Long Xiaoshan parked the vehicle in the village’s threshing ground at the entrance.
A group of children playing with firecrackers near the village entrance scattered as a large vehicle came toward them and stopped right in front of them.
They dispersed with a bang.
Then, standing at a distance, they couldn’t help staring with intense curiosity.
There were also several other vehicles parked on the threshing ground.
Today was the second day of the new year, and sons-in-law from outside were visiting to pay New Year’s respects.
Thus, the village was much livelier than usual.
When a son-in-law visits, he definitely brings along his dignity.
However, the few cars that were parked on the threshing ground were just ordinary sedans, the best among them being a Toyota SUV.
None were like the fierce Raptor F150 pickup truck, which sat there like a wild beast.
After getting out of the car, Chun Tao followed suit.
She gazed at the village, her expression clearly brimming with excitement.
“This is it, I’m home,” Chun Tao murmured as she gazed at the village shrouded in cooking smoke.
Several years had passed, but the village had hardly changed.
It gave her a feeling of familiarity and warmth.
“So this is the place,” Xiaoshan took a deep breath.
Today was the awkward son-in-law’s first visit, and even Long Xiaoshan, a Great Grandmaster, felt a tinge of nervousness, which he found amusing.
Calming himself, he took Chun Tao’s hand, “Let’s go in then.
We can leave the stuff here for now, I’ll bring it in later.”
“Okay,” Chun Tao replied softly.
The two of them walked along the stone-paved path into the heart of the village.
Long Xiaoshan had specially groomed himself before leaving today.
He was always casual, but in order to leave a good impression on the Yue Family, he had exceptionally dressed in Givenchy and tidied up his appearance, accentuating his distinguished aura even more.
Chun Tao was even more strikingly beautiful.
Nourished day and night by Long Xiaoshan and having cultivated the Cloud Water Art Qi, she had transformed profoundly, blossoming fully.
With fair and tender skin, an alluring figure, and dressed in a Donna Karan autumn and winter coat, she dazzled, void of any trace of her former rustic air.
The pair entered the village.
Villagers from Xu Jia Gou spotted them and kept their distance, not daring to approach too closely.
Being too beautiful or too outstandingly handsome can also impose a lot of pressure on people.
Especially with Long Xiaoshan and Chun Tao’s current demeanor, it was clear at a glance that they resembled urbanites from a big city.
Xu Jia Gou was a poor hamlet, inhabited by simple farmers, and suddenly seeing such a noble bearing in a man and woman who looked as if they had stepped right out of a painting,
they were both curious and slightly intimidated, only daring to watch from afar.
Long Xiaoshan, with Chun Tao’s hand in his, walked as their shoes clicked on the cobblestones.
The village hadn’t changed much, and as soon as Chun Tao entered, she began to reminisce.
After all, it was the place that had brought her up, where she had lived for nearly twenty years.
As they walked, she greeted some people by the roadside.
“Uncle Guangming!”
“Auntie Lizhen!”
The villagers who were recognized and greeted by her stood with mouths agape, adorned with awkward smiles, unsure how to respond to the woman as beautiful as a TV star.
It was only after Chun Tao had walked past that they exchanged glances and began whispering among themselves about the identity of the beautiful woman, wondering how she knew them.
Because Chun Tao had changed so much, they did not recognize her at all.
Long Xiaoshan leisurely walked on the slate road and, with Chun Tao’s guidance, made their way through the village.
Chun Tao pointed at a mud house under a large camphor tree in the distance, “My home is right there.”
Long Xiaoshan looked over.
The mud house seemed very dilapidated.
Outside was a courtyard.
At this moment, the courtyard was festooned with lanterns and streamers, adorned with the character for “happiness,” and the entrance was crowded with people; some of the cooking paraphernalia had even been set up outside the gate.
“Eh!” Long Xiaoshan expressed his surprise, “Your family is holding a celebration.”
Chun Tao also fixed her gaze, and upon confirming the character for “happiness,” she covered her mouth and said, “They really are hosting a celebration.
But who?
Could it be my younger sister?”
“Is it just you and your sister in your family?” Long Xiaoshan asked.
“Yes, it’s just me and my sister.
She’s three years younger than me; she should be twenty-one after the New Year,” Chun Tao replied.
“Then we really have come at an opportune time; it seems your little aunt is getting married,” Long Xiaoshan said with a smile, “Let’s go, let’s go in and have a look.”
Chun Tao quickly nodded in agreement.
However, the thought that her younger sister would get married without inviting her brought a trace of inexplicable melancholy to her heart.
The two quickened their pace toward the house, and before long, they arrived outside the courtyard.
Here, many people stood inside and outside the courtyard.
The village was small, and almost any significant event would attract a good portion of the village.
Long Xiaoshan walked over with Chun Tao.
The onlookers at the entrance, seeing a pair of celestial-like figures approach, were surprised, for Long Xiaoshan’s presence was overwhelming.
Though the people at the entrance found them quite unfamiliar, they moved aside, one after another.
This allowed Long Xiaoshan to walk straight into the courtyard.
With her family on her mind, Chun Tao had no inclination to greet the others, and she followed Long Xiaoshan inside.
Inside, the place buzzed with even more activity.
There were several banquet tables set up in the courtyard, and two more in the central hall.
One man, sporting a beer belly and appearing to be in his forties with quite a presence, stood in the courtyard smoking, hands on hips, loudly talking to the crowd.
A circle of people gathered around him, listening to the middle-aged man’s grandiose speech, occasionally emitting flattering laughter.
As Long Xiaoshan and Chun Tao entered, the courtyard suddenly fell quiet.
The boastful man stopped talking and looked their way.
The reason was that the pair stood out too much; Long Xiaoshan and Chun Tao were like two Cranes of Immortality entering a flock of chickens, their attire and temperament clashing with those around them.
Despite the man having seen some of the world, he too found this pair extraordinary.
Nevertheless, he didn’t seem as uncomfortable as the average villager.
He came forward and greeted them, “Who are you looking for?”
Ignoring him, Chun Tao’s gaze swept through the crowd until her eyes lit up, and she rushed toward a woman, calling out, “Mom!”
The woman, with a face marked by time, looked up to see Chun Tao approaching closer and appeared puzzled.
Only when Chun Tao took her hand did the woman stand up in a fluster and said, “My girl, you…
you’ve got the wrong person.”
“Mom, don’t you recognize me?
I’m Taozi,” Chun Tao said quickly.
The woman’s body trembled slightly.
She looked at Chun Tao incredulously, “You are Taozi?”
“Of course, I’m your daughter Chun Tao.
How can you not recognize me?” Chun Tao took the woman’s hand and placed it on her face, “Feel.”
The woman looked back and forth, and indeed, the facial features resembled those of her daughter, but the transformation in temperament was too drastic.
Chun Tao in her memory was a timid young girl with wheat-colored skin and a slightly thin frame.
However, the woman now stood before her with fair skin, a buxom figure befitting a young matron, long, black hair cascading over her shoulders, and a noble aura that shone brilliantly from her eyes and conveyed her grace—making it impossible to reconcile the two images into one.
What do you think?
