Chapter 888: Chapter 262 Honey Badger Takes Action!
March 7th, afternoon.
Lady Honey Badger was quietly reading a book in her residence within the Fifth Ring.
Although she was pardoned for her crimes by the Pope himself, it didn’t mean she could enjoy complete freedom. Her movements were still restricted, and two of the Papal Guards were in charge of watching her. However, aside from this, her requests were to be fulfilled as much as possible.
And Eilie had also been informed of Lady Honey Badger’s situation. She was to act as the messenger, bringing back the news, a handwritten letter from Lady Honey Badger, and the remaining payment promised by Cardinal Loki to the Hawkeye Organization. By now, she must have already arrived at Iris Kingdom, delivering everything to the intended recipient.
Having nothing better to do, Lady Honey Badger wanted to try walking the Path of Dedication. Therefore, she asked the Papal Guards who were watching her for a few books and was quietly studying them here.
For an Adapter, enduring loneliness and adapting to solitude are fundamental skills. Whether it be the Assassins who must maintain Silence in the Darkness, the Hunters patrolling the forests, or those Prophets and Alchemists who have seen the future but cannot speak of it to anyone… the Path of Adaptation is always associated with Silence.
Being freed from worrying about the organization’s financial status and political situations, not having to deal with high-risk missions for money based on flawed intelligence, not having to clean up after those foolish young Assassins… she felt her mental state had actually improved quite a bit.
Until this afternoon—when those two Papal Guards suddenly requested that she go to a certain place.
Her first reaction was to think that Aiwass might have had a change of heart, that the Holy Nation was planning to execute her secretly…
It took her a while to realize—this was the Holy Nation, not the Iris Kingdom she was familiar with. The Elves were not as treacherous as she had imagined; it was His Holiness, the new Pope, who truly had a matter to discuss with her.
When she arrived at the Twenty-Second Ring, she saw both Cardinal Aiwass clad in a black robe and the former Eternal Pope wearing The Holy Crown.
“…Your Holiness.”
She knelt on one knee, respectfully bowing to the two Popes: “Please give your orders.”
While Lady Honey Badger had never been a personal Assassin, she had lived long enough and seen enough—facing the two Popes, she naturally adopted the demeanor those privately nurtured Assassins took towards their masters.
“I indeed have a mission for you.”
Aiwass said solemnly, “I need you to leave the Holy Nation for a short time.”
Hearing the familiar mission briefing, Lady Honey Badger, who had been hesitant and somewhat intimidated at first, suddenly came alive, a strong sense of confidence welling up inside her.
While she had been an Assassin Master at the Fifth Power Level quite some time ago, she had nearly never touched upon high-level matters. One reason for this was that she didn’t like using her brain too much. Many Adapters are also deceivers and conspiracists, but she was not one of them.
Rather than sitting around a long table discussing those headache-inducing personal political stances, party ideologies, hidden implications behind special operations, social influences and public opinion, as well as the chain reactions that could arise from various actions… she would rather take a contract to kill someone, then come back to hear the final results.
And usually, by the time she returned from a kill, those people had yet to finalize their plans.
“Is it an assassination mission?”
Lady Honey Badger asked adeptly, “Or perhaps an infiltration and sabotage? Stealing intelligence? Or maybe to escort an important individual, or rescue hostages?”
“It’s more of an escort.”
Aiwass nodded and asked, “Do the Hawkeye have a branch in Star Antimony?”
“No branch… Are you referring to a group currently on a mission? If so, we have that.”
“Do you have any members that you dislike? Or those who you feel cannot integrate into the Holy Nation?”
Aiwass continued to inquire.
And upon hearing this, Lady Honey Badger immediately caught on—although she didn’t like to use her brain, it didn’t mean she wasn’t smart.
“You mean to say, you need a group of expendable Hawkeye members?”
“Correct.”
“Yes, there is.”
Without even thinking, Honey Badger answered directly without any hesitation.
——Undoubtedly, she had already thought of the right candidate.
To eradicate the Son of the Moon, she could even betray—or rather, sacrifice—her fellows from the Hawkeye Organization. These thieves, assassins, prostitutes, gamblers, liars, criminals, and others living in the gutters, had gathered largely to jointly confront the Son of the Moon.
Given that the Son of the Moon would always attempt to infiltrate upwards, becoming increasingly elite, recruiting from the very bottom of society was the safest course of action. This would prevent the organization’s higher-ups from being silently converted to the Son of the Moon.
Even if they wanted to betray the organization, the Son of the Moon would disdain them, unwilling to share the “gift of eternal youth and immortality,” their noble source blood, with these scums of scums—besides requiring the body of someone from the Path of Love, the transformation process also needed the “parent” transformer to provide a portion of their vital essence.
Even if some Son of the Moon were desperate enough—to track down the Hawkeye’s whereabouts, they might hold their noses and accept these traitors, but these would still be a minority.
This inevitably meant their organization was not pure. Although there were indeed some unsung righteous and chivalrous souls mingling in the darkness, more often it was a group of confused individuals just trying to survive, providing a perfect cover for the deceitful, incompetent, and mentally fragile criminals to infiltrate even the upper echelons.
And this could not be avoided, nor could their ways of thinking be changed, or education be employed.
Because a person who suddenly changed would easily betray themselves in daily life, drawing people’s attention, and could be discovered by the ubiquitous Sons of the Moon and Blood Slaves—Hawkeye was not a secret organization; their reputation was quite loud. Only those rotting at the bottom, stuck in the muck, could forever evade those fastidious Sons of the Moon.
But now the situation was different.
Hawkeye themselves knew they were unlikely to defeat the Son of the Moon completely. If they could utilize the strength of the Holy Nation to target the Son of the Moon, then most previous principles, precedents, patterns of behavior… even the official members, could be abandoned.
She, of course, had feelings for those rotten people huddling together for warmth.
But when it was time to let go, she would not hesitate—
——For a greater benefit.
Thinking thus, a sunset-like crimson flickered and vanished in the depths of Honey Badger’s eyes, like a cigar lighting up and extinguishing in the darkness.
“Listen up, Honey Badger.”
Cloaked in a black robe, Aiwass ordered, “I need you to take two people to Star Antimony. Safely deliver the target person to the specified location, and give her some information on Hawkeye strongholds…”
Before Aiwass even finished speaking.
Honey Badger suddenly twitched her nose and furrowed her brow.
She smelled something somewhat familiar… It was the scent of the Son of the Moon she had identified on Aiwass previously.
Then, Aiwass waved his hand.
A shroud of shadows, imperceptible to Honey Badger, suddenly lifted. Such was the power of Advanced Divine Art, and despite being an Adapter of the Fifth Power Level, Honey Badger hadn’t noticed this veil at all.
In the corner of the room sat a noble young lady with long black hair, quiet and still, with a crow resting on her shoulder. She appeared to be no more than thirteen or fourteen… and what caught Honey Badger’s immediate attention was her pupils that shimmered with a blood-red glow.
The crow’s pupils were also of this same blood-red color.
——It was the Son of the Moon!
“…Have her boldly kill those Hawkeye members to find a way to blend into the local Son of the Moon’s circle.”
At that moment, Aiwass said.
