Chapter 56: Fifty, you are committing desecration!!!! (Two in one)
Rhein West Library.
Ulu stopped in front of the library’s grand entrance, looking up at the place he had visited countless times a decade ago, now with some hesitation.
“What’s wrong?” Bai Wei’s voice rang out in his mind, tinged with a hint of mockery, “Afraid to go in?”
Ulu’s expression immediately darkened, “What’s there to be afraid of? I just feel… you’re playing with me.”
“Relax,” said Bai Wei indifferently, “I’m not interested in you that way.”
A spasm flickered at the corner of Ulu’s mouth. He took a deep breath, barely suppressing the urge to erupt, “You said you wanted to track down the other Corpse Blocks, yet you’ve brought me here.”@@novelbin@@
“Yes, is there a problem?”
“…Do you think the location of your Corpse Blocks will be written amongst the common collections in the library?”
“Of course, common collections would be impossible,” Bai Wei spoke leisurely, “but aren’t you a Priest now? The clergy of Rhein have access to certain books that ordinary people cannot, something you should be very clear about.”
Indeed, at Bai Wei’s behest, Ulu had once again donned his Priest Robe, which made him anxious. After all, he was a wanted man by Rhein, yet instead of fleeing, he was making a brazen appearance in Somo City, in front of the library belonging to the Rhein Church, and even properly dressed in his Priest Robe.
It felt like dancing madly under the gaze of the Rhein God, a fresh challenge to Ulu’s already frail heart.
He could almost hear his heart pounding.
“Don’t be nervous,” Bai Wei said with a laugh, “What Somo City has in abundance are Priests, nobody will pay you any mind. Your pure white Priest Robe can surely cover all your filth, can’t it?”
Faced with Bai Wei’s blatant mockery, Ulu didn’t retort. He simply took a moment to observe the people around him.
The Rhein Library was open to all of Somo City, so the majority of those entering and leaving were ordinary citizens, with only a few being clergy. As Bai Wei said, with so many Priests in Somo City, the passersby were hardly paying Ulu any special attention—they might glance curiously at him for standing in place so long, but their gazes didn’t linger and soon moved on in haste.
This provided Ulu with some reassurance. Of course, he also had a clear understanding of the Rhein Library situation; if Bai Wei had asked him to go directly to the West Cathedral in his Priest Robe, he would have definitely refused.
“You seem to misunderstand my level of access,” Ulu coldly responded to Bai Wei’s previous statement after alleviating some of his nervousness, “Even if the staff acknowledge my identity, the materials a regular Priest can access are still quite limited. If any ordinary Priest could easily find your Corpse Block, then you’re too…”
“Weren’t you able to find it?” Bai Wei laughed, interrupting Ulu, “Seems like you’re quite lucky.”
Ulu choked for a moment.
Lucky?
Ulu was feeling that the biggest regret of his life was that damn day he cheaply bought that finger from that damn black market dealer.
That damned black market dealer, damn it, was selling the real deal!
Thinking this, Ulu trembled with rage and lost any interest in continuing the argument with Bai Wei, entering the library with a dark expression.
West University Library was the sole library in Somo City and was also the largest in the territory controlled by the West Cathedral, housing innumerable books… after all, the Great Cathedral was behind it.
In the world tainted by “Desecration,” there were no nations, at most city-states. And above these city-states were the Churches, with the influence of the four Orthodox faiths encompassing over seventy percent of the land on this continent. Naturally, institutions with a special significance like libraries were governed by the major Churches.
Thus, the library staff were composed of Priests and Church Knights.
Walking into the library under the gaze of two Rhein Knights next to the great door, Ulu couldn’t help but feel his heart suspending again, after all, he had entered the Church’s sphere of influence.
The first floor of the library was open to the public, and anyone could borrow books here, so it was the most crowded. Even though everyone attempted to keep quiet, a slight noise was unavoidable.
Ulu made a round on the first floor, ensuring no one noticed him. Then, he affected an air of nonchalance and made his way to the second floor.
There were only one tenth of the people on the second floor compared to the first, making the space appear vast and open, bringing an overwhelming sense of oppression—because the second level was only accessible to clergy.
The administrator of the second floor was a friendly-looking old Priest a decade older than Ulu. Upon hearing footsteps, he looked up, and for a moment, Ulu felt scrutinized. But he continued unfazed towards the man, saying solemnly, “I would like to borrow a book.”
Seeing Ulu’s Priest Robe, the old Priest did not ask for any identification. He simply inquired, “What book would you like to borrow?”
Listening to Bai Wei’s description in his mind, Ulu pondered for a moment and then said, “The ‘West Cathedral Chronicles’.”
At the mention of the book title, the old Priest appeared surprised, but he didn’t question further. He just nodded, said “Please wait,” and walked away.
What do you think?
