Chapter 109
The scene was utterly silent.
Ye Bai sat on a wooden stool, staring at the three or four-year-old girl who took the form of Kraken.
Kraken, too, peered out from inside the fishing basket, her little head tilted as she gazed back at Ye Bai.
The two locked eyes for a moment before Ye Bai was the first to falter under those innocent, emerald-green eyes. For a second, she didn’t know whether to sigh in exasperation or just scream internally. Unable to help herself, she repeated her earlier question:
“You’re really Kraken?”
Kraken lifted her tiny face, looking at Ye Bai with hopeful anticipation. “Hungry!”
Was that supposed to mean ‘yes’?
Ye Bai’s lips twitched. It seemed Kraken had both answered her question and simultaneously reminded her of her endless hunger—fitting for the so-called ‘Insatiable Hunger.’
But… how was this the mighty Sea God Kraken? Where was the legendary deep-sea leviathan?
After a pause, Ye Bai voiced her most pressing question: “Why are you so small?”
In any race, the ruler was always the strongest, and the deep-sea folk were no exception. Their power was directly reflected in their size. And yet, when Ye Bai had checked Kraken’s level earlier, it was only Level 1.
At the question, Kraken’s expression instantly crumpled, as if recalling something painful. “Hungry… hungry…”
Ye Bai nearly groaned in frustration. Aside from introducing herself earlier, the little girl seemed capable of only one word: ‘hungry.’
But as she watched Kraken’s pitiful expression, a sudden thought struck her.
Could it be… she shrank from starvation?
Ye Bai’s mind flashed back to the ruins of the Sea God’s altar. Under normal circumstances, the deep-sea folk would have regularly offered sacrifices to Kraken to sate her endless hunger.
But the deep sea had mysteriously vanished from the surface of the divine realm, somehow ending up in the layered space of the infernal realm. And now, not a single deep-sea inhabitant could be found. Had something happened to them, leaving Kraken without sacrifices and starving to this state?
The logic flowed smoothly at first, but Ye Bai quickly shook her head. That didn’t add up.
Kraken might look like a child, but she wasn’t stupid. Even if she were, all living creatures had the instinct to seek food. If there were no sacrifices, Kraken wouldn’t just sit there starving—she’d hunt for herself.
The very existence of the Sea God’s altar was proof of that. The sacrifices were essentially the deep-sea folk’s way of saying, “We’ll feed you, just please don’t go wild.” Given Kraken’s gluttonous nature, letting her eat even ‘just a bite’ would undoubtedly lead to catastrophic consequences the deep-sea folk would never want to face.
There had to be a deeper reason why Kraken had starved to the point of becoming Level 1.
Still, judging by Kraken’s current state, the once-mighty Sea God’s drastic reduction in power likely was due to unfulfilled hunger.
So Ye Bai pressed further: “If you’re hungry, why don’t you just hunt for food in the sea?”
“Hungry!”
At this, Kraken’s face scrunched up again, on the verge of tears. She opened her mouth wide and pointed inside, where not a single tooth could be seen. “Hungry!”
“Huh?”
Having experience communicating with Autofis without barriers, Ye Bai vaguely grasped Kraken’s meaning—but not entirely.
Was it because she couldn’t hunt fish without teeth?
But earlier, when she devoured the three large fish in the basket, they had disappeared in an instant—swallowed whole. And when she ate the grilled fish, she hadn’t even left bones behind…
“Hungry…” Seeing Ye Bai standing there lost in thought without making a move, Kraken grew impatient. She propped herself up on the edges of the basket, trying to climb out, but no matter how she struggled, she couldn’t get further than poking her head out.
Watching this, Ye Bai let out a small sigh of relief—but it also confirmed her suspicion that this little girl truly was Kraken.
There was no other explanation. Over the past two days, no matter how big the fish Ye Bai caught, once they entered the basket, they shrank as if entering a dimensional pocket, fitting effortlessly inside. Only when she touched them would the ‘grid’ interface appear, allowing her to retrieve them without interference.
That was why she had stored three fresh fish in the basket, planning to grill them later at mealtime before transferring them to her personal inventory.
Who knew Kraken would barge in and eat them all, completely ignoring the ‘grid’ effect? This extraordinary ability was on par with Autofis stealing bread straight from Ye Bai’s personal inventory.
Just then, a nearby paper-cut figure chimed in: “I have a thought—is she just saying… she’s hungry again?”
Ye Bai blinked. That actually made sense. Maybe she was overcomplicating things.
After all, Kraken had only introduced herself after being fed grilled fish.
So this really was the ‘Insatiable Hunger’ in action…
Ye Bai opened her personal inventory, skimmed through it, and then—instead of taking out grilled fish—pulled out a loaf of bread.
Would Kraken… eat bread?
The question was instantly rendered meaningless. The moment the golden-brown bread appeared, Kraken’s eyes locked onto it, her tiny hands waving eagerly from the basket:
“Hungry!”
Despite her desperate excitement, when Ye Bai extended the bread toward her, Kraken didn’t snatch it. Instead, she stretched her neck forward, mouth open, waiting to be fed.
Noticing this, Ye Bai recalled how Kraken had behaved the same way when fed grilled fish earlier—which was why she hadn’t felt any fear or discomfort.
Given how ravenous Kraken seemed, even to the point of losing control (as seen when she lunged into the basket), it was oddly… polite that she still waited to be fed.
Ye Bai handed the bread to Kraken, and just like before, it vanished the instant she let go.
“Hungry!”
After swallowing the bread, Kraken’s eyes sparkled again, her expression bright with approval, as if praising the taste. Her voice even sounded livelier.
“Hee-haw!”
At the same time, Autofis—who had been silent until now—suddenly spoke up, braying with an expression that seemed to say, ‘You’ve got good taste.’
“Hungry!” Kraken replied to Autofis.
Watching this, Ye Bai’s face twisted into an indescribable expression. Somehow, these two had managed to achieve seamless communication—through bread.
In the future, if they advertised that “Baiye Town’s bread is beloved by divine realm VIPs,” it wouldn’t even be an exaggeration—after all, this was the actual Sea God vouching for it.
Taking this opportunity, Ye Bai asked Kraken again: "If you're hungry, why don't you find food in the sea yourself?"
Kraken looked at Ye Bai: "Hungry... can't... eat..."
Hearing Kraken utter new words besides "hungry," Ye Bai finally understood—apparently, feeding Kraken first would yield more responses.
"Why can't you eat?" Ye Bai pressed further. Earlier, the fish in the basket had each weighed over a hundred pounds, yet Kraken devoured them all in an instant.
"Hungry... eat..." Kraken opened its mouth, struggling to answer, as if its vocabulary was severely limited.
After straining to think, Kraken's emerald eyes suddenly lit up. Its small red head swiveled around, glancing at Ye Bai, Autofis, and finally settling on the balloon-like, semi-corporeal devil, Alicio, floating nearby.
"Hungry!" Kraken stretched out its hands, pointing decisively at the devil, signaling to Ye Bai: "Eat!"
What did this have to do with Alicio?
Following Kraken's gesture, the group's gaze landed on the semi-corporeal devil.
Seeing the devil's expression stiffen instantly, Ye Bai suddenly recalled something—when they had "fished" Kraken out of the water earlier, Alicio had refused to explain what happened underwater when faced with Kraken. If the encounter had been the same as the fishing process, there would have been no reason to hide it.
Now, Kraken was clearly pointing at Alicio and saying "eat."
Ye Bai guessed something and asked Kraken again: "Did you eat it earlier?"
"Hungry!" Kraken replied, sucking on its fingers while eyeing the devil with a greedy expression.
Alicio shuddered. "Hah... I'm incorporeal. How could it have eaten me? I'm perfectly fine right here!"
The paper-cut figure's voice rang out in realization: "Oh... so that's it. Part of its power is missing—probably consumed by Kraken underwater."
"Huh?"
Ye Bai froze, finally understanding why the devil had reacted so differently. If its life was truly at stake, of course it would hide the truth.
The fact that Kraken could eat an incorporeal devil didn't surprise Ye Bai much—given its law-level hunger, devouring a devil wasn't unusual. What puzzled her was why Kraken, starving in these waters, couldn't eat other fish but could consume a devil instead.
Was Kraken so weakened that it could only feed on incorporeal beings? What state was this sea deity in now?
Instinctively, Ye Bai used [Insight] on Kraken again. This time, the information displayed had changed.
[Kraken]
Level: 16
Though its attributes remained hidden, it had gained a whopping fifteen levels since the first time Ye Bai saw it!
Instantly, Ye Bai realized this change was due to Kraken eating after coming ashore. Over the past two days, just by fishing under Kraken's influence, Ye Bai had accumulated enough experience in her pool to jump from Level 45 to 49—only a couple of fish fillets away from Level 50.
Kraken's own conversion rate had to be far higher.
Ye Bai suspected Kraken had been Level 0 before. Had it gained Level 1 by consuming part of Alicio, thus recovering some strength?
At this thought, she turned to Kraken, who was tilting its head at her.
Now, the most pressing question was... what should she do with Kraken?
"Hungry! Hungry!" Kraken met Ye Bai's gaze, reaching out for food.
Release it? Toss it back into the water? Given its gluttonous nature, it now had the power to feast freely—would she even catch any fish afterward?
Keep it? This law-level hunger... even with her vast wealth, Ye Bai doubted she could afford to sustain it!
Besides, this was a sea deity—could she really keep it?
As if mocking her thoughts, a system prompt suddenly appeared:
[Kraken wishes to become your pet. Accept?]
Ye Bai: "..." So much for a deity's dignity.
What do you think?
