Chapter 38: The Moon-Devouring Black Emperor Suppressed Beneath the Cursed Waters
Xiao Yu smiled faintly. “To be honest, I’ve recently learned a new sword technique, but I’ve been struggling to master it. I decided to travel and seek inspiration, hoping to overcome this hurdle soon.”
“I see,” the old abbot replied with a chuckle. “Immortal Master, if you don’t mind, why not stay here at our temple for a while? In the Yin-Yang Sword Cave behind the temple, the insights of past abbots on swordsmanship are preserved. Perhaps they may be of help to you.”
“Oh? The Yin-Yang Sword Cave?”
Xiao Yu’s interest was mildly piqued but quickly waned.
Given the state of disrepair at Iron Pillar Temple, where even a Golden Core cultivator was absent and the strongest members were merely at the Foundation Establishment stage, he doubted the cave would hold anything of real value.
“Well, when I find some time, I’ll take a look. I hope my visit doesn’t disturb you too much,” Xiao Yu said politely.
“Not at all, not at all!”
The abbot’s face lit up with pride. He misinterpreted Xiao Yu’s courtesy as genuine interest, and the thought of a Golden Core master from Tianyong City visiting their humble temple filled him with joy.
“You must be weary from your long journey. I’ve already instructed the disciples to prepare a clean guest room for you. Once you’ve rested, we can begin reinforcing the formation tomorrow.”
The old abbot’s arrangements were meticulous.
After all, this was a distinguished cultivator from Tianyong City, and he dared not show even the slightest negligence.
“We cultivators are accustomed to travelling and don’t tire easily. Besides, I’ve already rested on the way here. Let’s head over now—I’d like to examine the formation and take a look at the thousand-year-old wolf demon,” Xiao Yu replied.
Inspecting the formation and the wolf demon in advance would help him prepare for the task.
Having slain nearly a hundred demons during his travels, Xiao Yu had yet to encounter one at the level of a millennia-old grand demon. Hence, he was curious.
“Excellent!”
The abbot was elated.
He hadn’t expected someone so young to be so conscientious. Xiao Yu’s diligence reaffirmed why he had achieved the Golden Core stage.
“Lead the way, Abbot.”
Xiao Yu smiled, rising to his feet.
The abbot promptly guided Xiao Yu out of the Pine Crane Pavilion and into the temple’s rear courtyard. Standing beside a dry well, he chanted a spell to lift its seal before stepping onto his flying sword and descending.
Realizing the wolf demon was sealed at the bottom of the well, Xiao Yu wasted no time. Leaping into the well, he activated his flying sword and followed.
After an hour of descent, Xiao Yu finally reached the bottom.
The well’s base was far more expansive than he had imagined—a vast, pitch-black, and frigid underground world, devoid of even a glimmer of light.
“Immortal Master, ahead lies the subterranean lake. The Moon-Devouring Black Emperor is sealed beneath the cursed waters,” the abbot explained.
“Our founder made a pact with it: if it sees firelight on the water’s surface, it may leave of its own will. Otherwise, it must remain here for eternity. Breaking the pact would result in divine retribution—lightning strikes and complete obliteration.”
“I’ve heard of this before,” Xiao Yu replied, recalling the details from the original story.
“Immortal Master, this place is shrouded in darkness. While we can’t use normal light, we can rely on night vision techniques to see clearly,” the abbot suggested.
“Night vision techniques?”
Intrigued, Xiao Yu learned the technique from the abbot within the span of an incense stick’s burning.
Activating the technique, the surrounding darkness instantly transformed into brightness akin to daylight. The newfound clarity allowed Xiao Yu to proceed unhindered.
“Let’s go. I’d like to see the lake.”
Xiao Yu led the way toward the frozen lake, eager to witness the legendary wolf demon.
Reluctantly, the abbot followed, his face pale and his heart filled with dread at the thought of facing the fearsome creature again.
Awooooo!!
As soon as Xiao Yu stepped onto the frozen lake, a wolf’s howl echoed from beneath.
The sound was sharp and fierce, filled with a chilling, violent energy that made the entire lake tremble slightly.
“Such immense demonic energy,” Xiao Yu muttered, frowning as he felt the ice vibrate beneath his feet.
The formation that sealed the wolf demon had merged with the lake. For the demon’s voice to cause even a slight tremor, the formation must have significantly weakened.
Awooooo!!
Awooooo!!
The piercing howls reverberated continuously.
The cries broke through the thick ice and the sealing formation, reaching the surface with an eerie intensity that sent shivers down the spine.
“So, this is the wolf demon? Strange, I can’t discern its cultivation level,” Xiao Yu remarked, his eyes glowing with spiritual light as he used Tianyong City’s Spirit Vision Technique to peer through the ice and cursed waters below.
The wolf demon appeared as a massive shadow, its true form obscured.
The Spirit Vision Technique, a basic skill of Tianyong City, allowed cultivators to gauge the strength of opponents. However, it was ineffective against those significantly more powerful than the user.@@novelbin@@
“Abbot, what level of cultivation does the Moon-Devouring Black Emperor have?”
“Its cultivation reached the Nascent Soul stage long ago,” the abbot replied. “But after being sealed for a thousand years, its power has greatly diminished. Though it retains its Nascent Soul status, its actual strength is only at the peak of the Golden Core stage.”
What do you think?
