Chapter 902: The Last Mission: Tragedy
Day Ninety-Five…
Boom! Boom!
The series of explosions continued, followed by the screams of people in the resort.
Jane's heart almost jumped out of her chest as she thought about Ethan and others. They were still in the resort.
Without wasting any more time, Nathan and Jane dashed toward the resort, checking on the situation.
'Are we getting attacked? By whom?' Jane tried to think, even though her heart was racing rapidly, worried about everyone, most especially Ethan.
Nathan could tell that those were explosives, not fireworks. He was also wondering what had gone wrong as he sprinted toward the venue.
"Nate! Our son!" Jane's voice caught his attention.
He glanced at her, giving her a reassuring nod. 'I'll find him!'
As soon as they entered the resort's premises, Jane and Nathan saw the two figures who had just come out of the room.
A sense of relief washed over Jane the moment she recognized Ethan. He was being held by Hanabi. They were both safe!
"Ethan!" Jane called out.
Ethan and Hanabi turned in her direction.
"Mom! Dad!" Ethan quickly ran toward them.
Jane crouched down, hugging the little boy. "I'm glad you are safe!"
But Jane couldn't feel relieved completely as Hanabi spoke to her.
"Sis, the sound of explosions. It looks like it comes from the venue of our party," Hanabi said in her anxious voice.
"I was going to check on them. But I couldn't leave Ethan. I can't bring him there as well because it's still dangerous," Hanabi added.
Jane nodded in understanding. Her heart began to clench inside her chest. She hoped everyone was safe.
"Where is my father?" She asked.
"I'm here," Mr. Hiroshi spoke from behind. He also came out of his room as soon as he heard the explosion. Kazuki stood next to him.
Jane released Ethan from her embrace and grabbed his shoulders. "Ethan, stay with your grandpa for now. Don't leave his side, understand?" She caressed his face.
"Yes, Mom." He obediently responded. "Please take care." Ethan knew that Jane and Nathan would not stand still. They were going to see the area of the explosion.
Jane kissed him on the forehead and hugged him one last time. "Pa, please take care of Ethan."
"Don't worry about Ethan," Mr. Hiroshi reassured her.
"Hanabi, stay with them. Guard them." She requested Hanabi.
"Noted, Sis!"
Jane and Nathan exchanged meaningful glances with one another. Together, they headed to the explosion area. They moved cautiously, wary of the hidden enemies.
A few minutes later…. a chaotic scene greeted their sight. The well-decorated romantic venue for Nathan's proposal turned into a big mess. The aftermath of the explosion turned the place into hell.
The surrounding area was on fire– the tables, the chairs, the flowers, and the curtains. Aside from the fire, the area was also covered with heavy smoke. Debris and destroyed objects were littered in the area.
But the scene that shattered Jane's heart the most was her comrades lying on the ground, bathing in their own blood.
They received multiple injuries– burned bodies, limbs partially severed, shrapnel injuries, and blood leaking from the different parts of their bodies.
"No!!!" Jane was shocked, unable to move from her spot. She shook her head vehemently, refusing to believe what she
Nathan had to hold her shoulders to keep her balance.
This was supposed to be a happy occasion. How did things turn out like this?
Jane felt like she was in a nightmare. 'Please… let this be just a nightmare.'
She shut her eyes, gritting her teeth.
Jane couldn't even shed tears from too much shock and turmoil. Her emotions were unstable. This was much worse than what happened before.
Meanwhile, Nathan tried to keep calm and be rational. He immediately called for an ambulance, reporting what had just happened in the resort. They needed to save as many as possible and bring them to the nearest hospital.
Deep inside, Nathan was also shaken by this unexpected event. He didn't even know if Aiden and Stephen were just fine. He didn't have time to look for them. He needed to stay by Jane's side otherwise, she would break down at any moment.
He knew that some of her comrades had already passed away and beyond saving. They received severe injuries.
After a few minutes, Jane finally moved. Her hurried footsteps could be heard as she ran.
"Jane!" Nathan tried to stop her. They were still not sure if another explosion would happen.
However, he couldn't stop Jane from approaching her comrades.
The first person she saw was Mystique. She was lying on the ground, barely conscious. She instinctively reached her hand as soon as she caught a glimpse of Jane running to her.
Jane kneeled next to Mystique. She immediately tore her dress to stop the bleeding from Mystique's amputated leg.
"Sis Phantomflake," Mystique called her name in her weak voice, almost losing consciousness. But she tried to stay awake. Her body was aching all over.
"Don't speak anymore. I'm going to save you." Jane said trying to conceal the panic in her voice. "Stay awake, Mystique. You will be alright."
But Mystique could tell that she couldn't survive this. She was losing a lot of blood.
"Sis. Don't cry. You have to stay happy… for all of us. That is our wish for you…"
Jane shook her head. "Stop talking. Please…"
But Mystique smiled bitterly. "Let me say this to you. I won't be able to talk to you in the future… I haven't said this to you yet… But honestly, you are my idol… I always admired your skills."
Jane clenched her fists, trying to hold back her tears. She didn't want to show her vulnerability to them at this moment. She was scared… frightened to death. She wasn't ready for this. She even ruined Nathan's proposal just to spend more time with them. How could this happen now? Why fate was so cruel?
Mystique's eyelid had become heavy. She could no longer open her eyes.
"Mystique, No! Stay awake. Stay with me. You are a strong woman! This injury is nothing to you. Oh right. Yes. Just keep talking to me. I'll listen." Jane spoke spontaneously, her body trembling.
But no matter what she said, Mystique didn't speak again.
"Jane, we need to find a survivor. She's gone…" Nathan grabbed her shoulders.
When Nathan said those words, Jane finally broke down. Her tears began to fall from the corners of her eyes. "NO! NO! This can't be. Why did they have to die now?! WHY?"
What do you think?
