Chapter 279 - 54: Qin Dahai’s Calculations
Once the BOSS died, the morale of the entire Black Mountain Bandits immediately collapsed. Almost instantly, those Black Mountain Bandits who had been fighting desperately began to flee. Some of them hadn’t even seen Xu Lie’s death; driven by the rules, they aimlessly ran back in the direction they came from.
At last, those desperately defending the walls could breathe a sigh of relief.
Chen Chuan, who was on top of the wall, had been paying attention to the situation here. Seeing that Xu Lie had fallen, he quickly asked Zhang Haojie, "Boss, shall we pursue and kill?"
"Pursue." Zhang Haojie said only one word. Chen Chuan immediately nodded, leading the members of the Awesome Empire to chase after them. The Black Mountain Bandits, having lost their will to fight and still numerous in quantity, didn’t put up any resistance against the small number of players chasing them and just kept running away.
Xiao Buli, through Han Wenhuan’s screen, glanced at the solo players on top of the walls. This time, these solo players didn’t join the chase but waited for Han Wenhuan’s command.
Xiao Buli nodded inwardly, it was true what they say, "Once bitten, twice shy." He could also tell from this that he had begun to establish some authority in the hearts of these people.
Knowing that those Black Mountain Bandits without any will to resist were like gift packages, especially those Elite Monsters, which had a high chance of dropping blue equipment, the fact that these people could hold back from immediately pursuing showed the extent of his influence.
"Old Han, lead the people to pursue and kill," Xiao Buli said.
Han Wenhuan agreed, and with a command, everyone then chased after them, slaughtering the Black Mountain Bandits mercilessly.
He Suoju and Du Yibo, however, set their sights on the BOSS named Du Guang. The two of them encircled him from the left and right.
However, while everyone was excitedly pursuing the fleeing enemy, Xiao Buli and Zhang Haojie didn’t leave. Instead, they stood facing each other in front of Xu Lie’s body. They had just been fighting side by side, but now they seemed to be at a standoff, neither of them going after the scattered Black Mountain Bandits.
After all, the loot from a golden-named big BOSS couldn’t be compared to that of ordinary Minor Monsters.
Although they didn’t move, they kept receiving various messages. Xiao Buli’s earpiece was intermittently filled with the excited shouts of his subordinates.
"Hahaha, I got a blue bow, awesome!"
"What’s that worth? I even got a piece of blue chainmail. I can’t wear it – does anyone have Leather Armor I can trade with?"
"There’s an Elite here, hurry up and help."
From the intermittent updates over the earpiece, it was evident that these solo players had reaped quite a bounty from the battle.
Suddenly, there was a burst of cheers, "Damn, silver equipment!" The voice was unmistakably He Suoju’s. Clearly, he and Du Yibo had managed to take down the silver-named small BOSS.
Although it had been agreed beforehand to distribute the loot from the BOSS together, the ensuing battle had been completely unlike any previous expectations. Unlike typical dungeon runs with a BOSS, this battle was a complete melee, and it just wasn’t possible to distribute loot as usual. So, everyone took what they could – whoever killed the BOSS got to loot it.
Having just killed the silver-named small BOSS, He Suoju and Du Yibo probably had a substantial haul.
It wasn’t clear how the two of them distributed the loot, but after about fifteen minutes, those who had chased after the bandits began to return one after another, each of them excited. However, upon seeing the body of BOSS Xu Lie, they all crowded around it again.
Although they wouldn’t get a share of the loot from this BOSS, they were still very excited at the prospect of witnessing the emergence of top-quality equipment.
"Boss, loot the body, what are you waiting for?" one of the Awesome Empire players urged.
Zhang Haojie didn’t speak, but one of the solo players objected, "What are you looting? This monster was taken down by our Elder Xiao. If anyone’s going to loot, it should be our Elder Xiao."
Chen Chuan became anxious, "This BOSS wouldn’t have been so easy to pick off if our boss hadn’t fought for so long. You guys are stealing the kill, don’t you know? So the drops from this BOSS should belong to us."
He Suoju wouldn’t stand for that, "Come on, what stealing the kill? If it wasn’t for our Elder Xiao stepping in, your boss would’ve been dead long ago and wouldn’t even be standing here talking." @@novelbin@@
The two groups argued heatedly, their faces turning red with emotion. Seeing this, Chen Chuan wisely didn’t bring up their previous conflict. If they were to get into the details, a fight might break out, and with them not having the numerical advantage, the outcome was uncertain. He chose to bide his time for now.
Though he didn’t say anything in the game, he did report the incident to Zhang Haojie in the real world.
Zhang Haojie slightly nodded after hearing this, "You did the right thing. We can’t turn hostile just yet."
However, Zhang Haojie was also wary of Xiao Buli. He couldn’t help it; the power of those Cloud Thunder Leap spells was just too overwhelming, making it impossible for him to gauge Xiao Buli’s true strength accurately. In truth, Xiao Buli’s real strength was far less compared to others.
Although Cloud Thunder Leap was enormously powerful, it was too consuming, requiring 100 True Yuan points per use, and its hit rate was infuriatingly unreliable, making it difficult to hit a target unless they were standing still or caught by surprise.
However, without Xiao Buli mentioning it, Zhang Haojie naturally couldn’t understand these things clearly either. After hesitating for a moment, Chen Chuan suddenly suggested, "How about we auction with Gold Coins, whoever bids the most gets the loot."
Xiao Buli was startled for a moment. He did have quite a few Gold Coins in his bag, although he had given fifty Gold Coins to Han Wenhuan and the others. But with the one hundred Gold Coins he received from his master and the ones he had saved up from before, he still had over fifty Gold Coins.
However, if it came down to a bidding contest, his fifty-some Gold Coins definitely couldn’t compete with the Great Guilds. He didn’t want to end up with just some Gold Coins; after all, that boss had a chance of dropping gold-tier equipment.
At this point, Du Yibo stepped forward and said, "Why don’t you take a break? Haven’t you seen that the main party hasn’t said anything?"
Zhang Haojie looked at the corpses on the ground and fell into a long silence before he suddenly said, "How about we roll for it?"
Xiao Buli didn’t respond. Auctioning with Gold Coins was somewhat frustrating, but rolling for the loot was something he wasn’t confident about either. The boss’s loot was definitely not going to be bad. Isn’t it too risky to just roll for it? Could it be that this guy has an exceptionally high Luck Value and is sure he is going to win?
He shook his head, "I think we should first see what’s dropped and then decide how to distribute it. The items may just happen to be what each of us needs."
Zhang Haojie nodded, "Fine, then I will do the opening. I assure you with the honor of the Awesome Empire, I won’t nab any equipment."
Xiao Buli scoffed, "Give me a break, how much is honor worth? Besides, with your Great Guild’s wealth and power, what could we possibly do if you did decide to nab the equipment? In my opinion, it’s better if I do the opening."
Zhang Haojie was rendered speechless by Xiao Buli’s words, but he didn’t show any anger; however, letting Xiao Buli do the opening was absolutely out of the question.
Now it was clear that neither side trusted the other, so deciding who would open the loot had become a troublesome matter.
"How about letting me do it?"
A voice suddenly rang out from the crowd, and everyone turned to look towards the source of the sound. It was a player dressed in militia Leather Armor — Qin Dahai.
Qin Dahai was having a rough day. Earlier, while defending the wall, he had been shot with a few Arrows and nearly died. He managed to retreat and heal up, just as the Black Mountain Bandits started to collapse. In his rush to join the fight and snatch some loot, he hadn’t gone far when the Black Mountain Bandits came back. Lucky for him, he ran fast enough to avoid a nasty death.
Unlike the players from the Awesome Empire who helped and looked out for each other, no one was willing to help him.
After finally returning, he led a few NPC militiamen to hide in a corner and desperately hold on. Eventually, the Black Mountain Bandits collapsed once more. However, his cowardice got the better of him again, and he didn’t dare to give chase.
When he finally realized the bandits were truly defeated, it was too late to pursue; all the Elite Monsters had been wiped clean, leaving only some White Name Minor Monsters.
He huffed and puffed in pursuit and managed only to scrape up a few common white-tier items, not even a single light blue-tier. After fighting so hard, Qin Dahai was utterly frustrated for coming away with nothing.
Having observed from the sidelines for a good while, he suddenly realized there might still be a chance to snag something. Although he definitely wouldn’t get a share of the boss’s loot, if he could help resolve the current deadlock, he’d be happy with any trinkets thrown his way.
So, after much hesitation, he eventually couldn’t help but suggest—why not let me do the opening?
"You?" Chen Chuan glanced at Qin Dahai’s shabby equipment and said disdainfully, "Who do you think you are? It’s not your turn to open."
Zhang Haojie’s eyes flashed with a glint of insight, "Hold on, I think this is a good idea. What do you say?" he asked, turning to Xiao Buli.
Xiao Buli hesitated, his gaze lingering on Qin Dahai for a moment. In strict terms, Qin Dahai didn’t belong to either side. He certainly didn’t have much of a relationship with him, just as he had nothing to do with Zhang Haojie.
With that thought, he nodded, "Alright, he can do the opening." Xiao Buli said, "We’ll both leave the party and invite him."
"Wait a minute, I know helping you open the loot isn’t a big deal, but at the very least, I did you guys a small favor. If the boss drops any junk equipment that you guys don’t want, how about giving it to me? Or you could share some of the Gold Coins from the boss’s drop with me."
Chen Chuan got immediately irritated, "Damn, you’ve got some nerve asking for Gold Coins!"
"Chen Chuan!" Zhang Haojie suddenly called out, of course within their voice chat channel. Hearing this, Chen Chuan immediately fell silent.
"As for this matter, I have no problems with it. What about you, Elder Xiao?"
