Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Young Commander, You’ve Arrived?
Thirty minutes later, Gu Wei showed up at the Gu Group.
He entered the lobby, then used facial recognition to access the president’s private elevator.
The two secretaries at the front desk watched him in surprise.
“Who is that? He looks a bit familiar, and so handsome.”
“If he can use facial recognition to access the president’s elevator, he must be from the Gu Family. Could he be Mr. Gu’s brother?”
“That must be the case. Since he’s been authorized to go up, we won’t need to worry about whether he has an appointment. Let him go up.”
…
Gu Wei took the elevator directly to the 39th floor.
The door opened to an open-plan office for secretaries and assistants, with four female secretaries, two male assistants, and the slightly older Assistant Bai, who was about 35 years old.
As soon as Assistant Bai saw Gu Wei, he immediately got up to greet him, “Young Commander, you’ve arrived?”
Gu Wei frowned, “Don’t address me like that; it’s not proper.”
“Got it, Young Commander.”
Gu Wei gave him a cold look, and Assistant Bai quickly changed his tone, chuckling, “Mr. Gu the second.”
Gu Wei let it be, how he was addressed was none of his concern.
“Mr. Gu, Mr. Gu is having a meeting with some shareholders inside. You can just go in.”
Then, Assistant Bai led him to the president’s private conference room.
When the old shareholders inside saw Gu Wei, they all started shouting, “Oh, our Young Commander is here!”
“Hello, Young Commander.”
“Young Commander is becoming more and more imposing, much like your grandfather back in the day!”
Gu Wei kept his expression cool, “It’s one thing for others to jest, but you old fellows should watch the influence you have and not go too far.”
Sitting in the center, dressed in a black suit, Gu Cheng also spoke up, “Don’t tease him like that; he doesn’t like it. Tomorrow, people might use it as fodder for gossip, making it seem like our family wants to establish a separate power. That’s an accusation we can’t afford. Just treat Gu Wei as an ordinary soldier.”
Hearing Gu Cheng’s words, the old shareholders no longer joked around.
Gu Cheng walked in and casually found a seat.
Everyone else was in a uniform suit and tie, except for Gu Cheng, who was dressed in casual attire, out of place at this meeting.
Gu Cheng spoke again, “Gu Wei, although I’m managing the Gu Group, you also hold quite a few shares. Since you are available, I hope you can also offer some advice on some company matters.”
Gu Wei said straightforwardly, “But I’m a simple soldier and don’t know much about business; I’m afraid I won’t have much advice to offer.”
“That’s fine,” Gu Cheng leaned back in his chair, slowly tapping his fingers on the desk, “Our company is currently developing a batch of life detectors for use in hospitals and rescue operations. You’re studying various detection devices in the military, aren’t you? Could you give us some technical guidance?”
Gu Wei responded, “As long as it doesn’t involve military secrets, naturally I can.”
“Of course not, our technology is half philanthropic, half commercial; we don’t need those secret military technologies. Later tonight, I will send you the R&D data, you go back and take a look, see if there’s any issue with the data.”
“Sure,” Gu Wei agreed readily.
…
Su Meixi also arrived at the hospital.
Because of yesterday’s incident, she was feeling anxious on her way to work, worried about her colleagues’ opinions of her.
She had wanted to take a day off and return after the incident had completely subsided—after all, things on the internet are like the wind, today’s hot topic, forgotten tomorrow.
But she felt that asking for leave would be a sign of weakness, and she shouldn’t be weak!
So she went to work with determination.
However, when she entered the hospital and encountered her colleagues, she found that no one looked at her strangely. Everyone either behaved as usual or greeted her warmly.
A nurse responsible for the front desk even gave her a small bouquet of chrysanthemums, saying, “Dr. Su, these are flowers my boyfriend gave me today. I saved one for you—a chrysanthemum represents courage.”
Su Meixi smiled, touched by the gesture.
When she arrived at her department, Sister Zhou saw her and hurriedly took out a bottle of water, dipped a string of twigs into the water, and patted her.
Su Meixi was startled, “Sister Zhou, what are you doing?”
Sister Zhou explained, “This is talisman water; these are pomelo leaves. I went to pick them from my mother-in-law’s place this morning. Patting you with this is to dispel financial loss and ward off disasters. Beating you with it is to turn bad luck into good fortune. Yesterday’s incident is over; you just focus on your work today.”
Su Meixi couldn’t help but laugh, “You’re a doctor, you believe in these things?”
“It’s about belief, isn’t it? Rituals are important.”
While Su Meixi was touched by this, Xiao Du, a young male doctor, brought over a cup of coffee, saying, “Dr. Su, this is ‘buy one, get one free’ coffee from this morning. I drank one and the other is for you.”
Knowing it was a kind gesture from Xiao Du, she accepted it without hesitation, “Then I won’t be polite.”
“No need to be, you treated me to milk tea last month.”
“Did I? I don’t remember that.”
“Well, it seems ‘important people tend to forget.'”
Mr. Wang also arrived, a person who usually acted quite opportunistically, but upon seeing Su Meixi, he surprisingly asked, “Dr. Su, today would you prefer to be in the clinic or the treatment room?”
Su Meixi replied, “I’ll follow the director’s arrangement.”
According to the schedule, she was supposed to be in the clinic today.
Mr. Wang said, “Why don’t you go to the treatment room today, and let Dr. Li Pingping take the clinic.”
Because of the heat yesterday’s incident had generated, many locals had seen it, and if Su Meixi was in the clinic, patients would inevitably ask this and that, so it was better to move her to the treatment room.
However, Li Pingping was not happy about it.
“Director, is it necessary to swap shifts? I’ve already told several patients that I would be performing their surgeries today.”
Mr. Wang did not listen and said, “Let it be.”
Li Pingping pouted.
Humph, playing the victim online, who can’t do that?
No matter how much you play the victim, it won’t cover up the fact that Su Meixi abandoned her child.
…
At noon, Su Meixi was eating in the hospital cafeteria.
Just after she served herself, several doctors came by and actually gave her their drumsticks.
“Dr. Su, eat more.”
Su Meixi quickly replied, “But I already have a drumstick, see, there’s no room left.”
“That’s braised drumstick that Dr. Liu gave you; mine is fried.”
“Mine is barbecue-flavored.”
“This hospital’s food is good; they have five or six ways to cook drumsticks.”
A female doctor even offered her milk tea, saying she bought it from outside. @@novelbin@@
Although Su Meixi wasn’t used to being the center of attention or care, looking at her bowl filled with a large pile of drumsticks, she felt a warm feeling inside.
While eating, Li Pingping who sat at the next table brought up a topic, “Dr. Su, regarding yesterday’s matter, who helped you resolve it? It feels like a PR company did it; ordinary people couldn’t make a counterattack so quickly. I guess you must know some very influential people. Is that man your boyfriend, or a patient of yours?”
What do you think?
