Chapter 78: 78 Tracking
Chapter 78: Chapter 78 Tracking
The end of the year was approaching.
On the eve of Little New Year’s, Su Meixi received a call from Ah Li, who invited her to come out and gather with everyone.
Ah Li was a fellow female doctor who had come alongside her to provide support; they had both been harassed by Mr. Su. While Su Meixi was assigned to Wu Bian Town, Ah Li hadn’t been sent to such a remote location.
The doctors that had arrived together had created a chat group; whenever there was a good signal, Su Meixi would chat a bit, but their conversations were mainly focused on professional matters.
Su Meixi told Dr. Ma about taking a day off, and Dr. Ma immediately agreed.@@novelbin@@
Dr. Ma said, “You’ve been here for so long and haven’t taken a single day off. It’s time for you to go out and have some fun. Don’t worry about coming back; I’m here.”
With peace of mind, Su Meixi left for the county city.
She traveled by van.
Two months had passed since she had arrived, and it was colder than before; the snow had piled up, and the roads were icy.
Su Meixi didn’t drive fast, and since there were hardly any other vehicles on the road, the trip went smoothly.
It took three hours to reach the county city, where she arrived at the restaurant where they had agreed to meet for a meal.
The dozens of doctors from Feng City were all there; though they hadn’t known each other for long, they were from the same hometown, so they greeted each other like old friends.
Everyone talked about the health centers they served and shared their experiences.
In summary, life here was indeed not easy, and neither were the people.
Someone mentioned Mr. Su had been dismissed and reassigned to a health center in town.
Both Su Meixi and Ah Li felt that Mr. Su got what he deserved.
During the meal, someone asked, “Would you be willing to stay in this border area permanently?”
Everyone shook their heads.
Su Meixi also unconsciously shook her head; she was committed to doing her duty while she worked here, but the idea of staying indefinitely didn’t appeal to her—she wasn’t a saint.
However, one of the guys raised his hand and said, “I… I’m not sure.”
This was a young male doctor from the second hospital, surnamed Lu.
Dr. Lu seemed troubled, “I think… I’ve fallen in love with a local girl.”
The male doctor who had been assigned to the same town as Dr. Lu said, “He’s fallen for a nurse at the hospital. She’s beautiful and kindhearted, returned to repay her hometown after graduating from university. She said she might stay here for life.”
The crowd murmured in response.
Dr. Lu had brought up this subject because he wanted to hear everyone’s opinions.
“Dr. Lu, this is a sacrifice for love. Since you like this girl and she’s worth you going after, I support you.”
“Dr. Lu, you need to think carefully. It’s fine for you to stay here, but you should also consider your parents. They didn’t have an easy time raising you. If you stay here permanently, it’s like they don’t have a son anymore. Parents raise children for their old age, but in the end, they’d still worry about you for a lifetime.”
“I feel the same. Love is too intangible, it doesn’t last. If you stay here, you’ll lose your position at the second hospital; with such low wages here, it would be hard to make ends meet without money.”
Dr. Lu’s expression became blank, clearly contemplating.
Su Meixi couldn’t help but ask herself: What if she and Gu Wei hadn’t divorced, and Gu Wei’s mother had also come to interfere and made her stay with him permanently?
She had no parents to take care of; salary didn’t matter as long as she could support herself.
Probably, she would have been especially conflicted as well.
Luckily, she and Gu Wei were already divorced.
…
After the group had gathered for half the day and as the day turned to dusk, they bid each other farewell and headed back to their respective places.
Su Meixi did some shopping in the county city.
Towels, scarves, thick cotton shoes, hot water bottles, electric blankets, and all sorts of warming items were bought in one go, as well as some snacks.
On her way back, there was still a signal, and Dr. Ma called to ask if she wanted to join them for dinner.
In the south, Little New Year’s was a significant festival, so the teachers supporting them would gather for a meal together.
Dr. Ma said he had asked his wife to prepare some dishes; if Su Meixi found it convenient, she could come back and join them.
Su Meixi politely declined, saying she had already eaten plenty in the county city and planned to just have some instant noodles once she returned.
Dr. Ma was usually busy, and family reunions were rare, so she didn’t need to bob in. Moreover, the trip back would take over three hours.
After hanging up the phone, she drove alone on this deserted highway.
The snow had gotten heavier, and the surrounding mountains were covered with thick layers of snow.
Su Meixi’s van was full of gas; she wasn’t worried about running out of fuel, just praying for safety, so she continued to drive slowly.
However, mid-journey, she noticed two motorcycles following her.
Both bikes were modified, and the riders were fully geared up; she wasn’t sure if they were testing the snowmobiles or following her.
She instinctively accelerated.
The two motorcycles sped up as well.
Realizing something was wrong, she dared not go too fast to avoid another vehicle overturn.
She held out hope: maybe the motorcycles weren’t following her after all?
Finally, her vehicle reached a transfer station, and without a second thought, Su Meixi drove straight there.
She had been to this transfer station, which had a shop, a gas station, and a place to eat.
But perhaps due to the time of year, there were no tourists, and the shops and diners were closed, leaving only a gas station open with a single attendant.
Su Meixi, not minding the details, drove to the gas station and pretended to need gas.
She thought to wait until the motorcycles passed by.
Unexpectedly, the motorcycles also came in.
The two men riding the motorcycles removed their helmets, staring at her with ill intent.
Both middle-aged, one had pockmarks on his face, and the other had a scar—neither looked friendly.
Su Meixi gripped her phone tightly out of nervousness, but outwardly she tried to appear calm.
“M’am, with this wind howling and snow coming down, where might you be heading?” the pockmarked man surprisingly approached Su Meixi to ask.
“Going home,” Su Meixi responded coolly.
“You’re not from around here, are you?”
“I’m here to teach,” she lied.
“So you’re a teacher. No wonder you’re so pretty.”
Scar approached as well, “Miss, are you from the south? I’ve heard that southern people are all good-looking. Are all the other girls there as pretty as you?”
“I’m not sure,” Su Meixi said.
Her gas tank had been full to begin with, and it didn’t take long to fill what little was needed.
The attendant told her, “Miss, your tank is full.”
“Okay, how much?”
“60.”
Su Meixi scanned to pay, then got back into the van.
But the pockmarked man came up to her window, “Miss, can I get your contact information?”
What do you think?
