Chapter 9 – Prayer Meeting
Somewhere, in the darkness, a door was gently pushed open, and a figure slipped into the room.
The figure traversed the elongated, dark space and pushed open another door. Behind this door was a faint blue glow, coming from a wall-mounted LCD TV. A burly man was sitting in front of the fifty-five-inch screen, with the light from the display tube constantly changing on his face.
"This is the Kantu Daily bringing you the news. We are at the landing site of flight A9532." A reporter said in front of the camera, "What happened today can only be described as a miracle. The pilot, Leng Ming, who made an almost impossible emergency landing, has now been sent to the Central Hospital of Kantu City.
It's reported that Captain Leng needs time to recuperate and is temporarily unable to accept interviews..."
The burly man picked up the remote control and pressed a button, immediately muting the TV.
"It seems you already know," said the shadow standing behind the sofa, a woman's voice, "The operation failed. The plane didn't land, and the Sky Eye Commissioner on the plane is still alive."
After a pause, she added: "Now the commissioner has returned to the Sky Eye. He should arrive at the excavation camp as early as tonight. And since the plane did not crash, it's only a matter of time before they notice that the engine was tampered with. By then, it will be difficult for us to make a move."
The man pondered, staring at the muted LCD screen, his fingers unconsciously stroking the armrest of the sofa.
The incident with A9532 wasn't an accident, but a deliberate act. The real target was only one, the Sky Eye commissioner who was on the flight to Kantu.
A day ago, the Sky Eye found an object at a location on the outskirts of Kantu City. The Sky Eye set up a cordon and established a camp, and the expert responsible for identification was expected to arrive at the scene today.
At present, the Sky Eye's attention to this newly unearthed object is not high. But once the expert arrives at the scene and makes an identification, the danger level of the object will surely rise.
This is clearly bad news for them who intend to make a move on the object.
"'Heroic pilot pulls off a miracle,' we all know that's nonsense," the man glanced coldly at the woman behind him, "No one could make an emergency landing under such circumstances. What happened?"
"An Extraordinary Being intervened," the woman said.
"A person from the Sky Eye?" the man frowned, "Did they detect our actions?"
"No. It seems the Sky Eye doesn't know what's going on either. It should be a wild Extraordinary Being."
The man grunted heavily.
"An upstart Extraordinary Being who dares to meddle in the affairs of the Prayer Meeting? Good, then he will realize the ridiculous mistake he made in the most brutal way, and then pay the ultimate price in immense pain and regret."
The man's eyes revealed a dangerous light under the glow of the TV, like a lion whose territory has been violated.
The woman said calmly: "We are currently unable to identify the Extraordinary Being. However, the Sky Eye believes that this Extraordinary Being killed the object N-2814 in an instant, which was previously rated as a level three threat.
Furthermore, there are signs that the subject may be a power-type Extraordinary Being of Sequence A, and possesses a super high-speed flying ability of unknown principle. According to the survivors on flight A9532, the subject seemed to have caught the falling plane barehanded."
The man fell silent.
Barehanded...
There was silence for a good half a minute, and then the man hummed lightly.
"Priorities first, let's leave this Extraordinary Being alone for now, we'll deal with him later," he said somberly, "One issue at a time, let's focus on the object first."
"I think so too," the woman agreed.
The man thought for a moment, then said, "Notify the action team, prepare to move tonight."
"The action team members aren't fully assembled yet," the woman said, "we haven't..."
"We're out of time. Sky Eye hasn't realized what they've unearthed yet, so we still have a chance. Once they notice something's off and reinforce their guard, even if we're fully prepared, we might not succeed."
He paused, then asked, "Is the Cunning Beast ready?"
"It should be ready for battle by nightfall," the woman replied.
"Has Shadow arrived? He's leading the team, right?"
"Yes, he's ready to act at any moment."
"That's enough then."
"...Understood." The woman nodded, stepping back towards the door, "I'll inform the action team."
The door closed. The man turned the volume back up and stared at the LCD screen, lost in thought.
...
...
At 3:05 in the afternoon.
Jiang Bei finished watching the news report on the television without missing a word, raising his eyebrows in disbelief.
That's it? That's all?
Engine failure, the captain keeping his cool and saving all lives onboard... and that was it.
There was no grand scene of him displaying his power, no headlines like "Shock! Superman really exists". It was as if no one noticed his existence at all.
He was careless, he should have shown his face to all the passengers before leaving. Jiang Bei reflected.
But on second thought, at least the pilot definitely saw him, there's no reason not to mention it. So, there seemed to be only one possibility.
The truth had been covered up.
He should have thought of it earlier. Now he suddenly realized that the world wasn't as peaceful as he had thought, that superpowers existed not only in comics and movies. But he had never heard of this in the news over the years, someone must be covering it up.
Such a common setting in fantasy works was not surprising, if Jiang Bei knew about it before, he might have even agreed with this kind of approach to avoid panic. But now it was different.
This cover-up approach affected his speed of expanding his influence and earning Treasury value.
He would rather be a well-known icon like the Superman in the comics, wear his underwear outside, save the earth an average of eight to ten times a week, condense the two big words "Hope" into an "S" logo on his chest, that might be the quickest way to earn money.
Maybe carry a plane around the city square?
Or create a certified large V account for some operations? Sounds a bit low, but after all, it's worth it for the sake of survival. It's just that it might attract unnecessary attention...
As he was thinking, Jiang Bei suddenly felt someone poke his kidney. Turning his head, he saw Xiao Qi with her innocent big eyes.
"No more snacks, I want to eat," she said.
Jiang Bei: "..."
Jiang Bei figured that his kidney was still recovering, and it just so happened that Xiao Qi might also need new clothes — it wasn't right to always make her wear his clothes, and Jiang Bei also wanted to ask her more questions, so he took her out.
However, once they were outside, Xiao Qi seemed less interested in answering his questions and more interested in pulling him around and asking him things. One moment she was pressed against the store window, curiously eyeing the counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh cards inside, the next she was eyeing the novel snacks in the hands of passing children.
After buying a few clothes in a small roadside shop, Xiao Qi suddenly became animated as they neared their apartment.
"Snacks! We didn't buy snacks!"
She tugged at Jiang Bei's sleeve, looking as though she would squat on the ground and refuse to move if she didn't get any snacks.
"Alright, alright, snacks," Jiang Bei conceded.
Ten minutes later, Jiang Bei placed a shopping bag full of items onto the counter of the store owner.@@novelbin@@
The shop owner picked up the laser scanner, a smile spread across his face as he glanced at Jiang Bei, "Finally taking my advice, are you? Not a peep and then you make a big splash! You've really found a gem."
"What?"
Jiang Bei was taken aback, following the shop owner's gaze, he saw Xiao Qi acting like a curious child, rummaging through items on the shelves. At the moment, she was fiddling with a carton of eggs.
A bad premonition dawned on Jiang Bei, "Hold on, put that down. That's not a snack. Don't..."
Crack.
The egg carton fell to the floor, eggshells shattered, and golden yolk splattered all over the place.
Xiao Qi instantly pulled her hand back and stood quietly to the side, looking innocent.
Jiang Bei sighed, "I'm sorry about that. I'll pay for the eggs."
The shop owner, still smiling, said, "It's just a carton of eggs, no worries. Consider it my gift, just don't forget to invite me to the wedding feast."
He then lowered his voice, leaning closer to Jiang Bei, "You've really got something there. Quite the find. You know I know my cars. A lot of cars out there look new on the surface, but their cylinders are black. The one you've found not only is high class but also has low mileage. I can guarantee it's brand new. You might not understand the rarity of a new car in this era of used cars. You'd better cherish her…"
"This isn't what you think, boss." Jiang Bei looked displeased, "But how could you even tell all this?"
"Of course," the shop owner puffed out his chest, "I had my fair share of stories when I was young. I had enough ex-girlfriends to fill a train car... Oh, but don't mention this to your sister-in-law, she doesn't know…"
"Cough, cough." Jiang Bei coughed lightly, hinting at him.
The shop owner paused, turned his head, and found his eight-year-old daughter standing by with her innocent, wide eyes.
The shop owner: "..."
The atmosphere suddenly became awkward.
"Ha… haha, Daddy is just joking with the customer." The shop owner chuckled awkwardly but kindly, ruffled his daughter's hair and whispered, "Don't talk nonsense in front of your mom."
"Ok!" the little girl obediently nodded.
"What a good girl." The shop owner smiled.
"Daddy, I want to buy the Magical Girl Little Love toy set!"
Cornered, the little girl wore a cunning smile on her face.

The smile on the shop owner's face gradually froze.
"I guess I should pay for that carton of eggs." Jiang Bei paid, laughing as he lifted the shopping bag from the counter, "Looks like you might need it, boss."
"..."
At 5:30 PM, Jiang Bei, who had finally finished shopping, walked home carrying bags of different sizes. Xiao Qi followed him, happily licking a large ice lolly.
"So cold, so hard!" The girl exclaimed in satisfaction, "It feels so good~"
"As long as you're happy..." Jiang Bei panted while carrying a bunch of shopping bags, feeling like Popeye after eating spinach.
"Your physical fitness does indeed need improvement." Xiao Qi said earnestly, "A good physical foundation is important for enduring the Extraordinary. Especially soon, you will awaken your own…"
She stopped speaking mid-sentence, her steps suddenly halting.
Jiang Bei walked a few steps ahead before realizing something was off, and turned around in confusion, "What's wrong?"
Xiao Qi closed her eyes, her ears pricked as if listening carefully to something. Jiang Bei noticed her small ears seemed to move slightly.
They looked somewhat cute.
"Gunshots, sounds of fighting... Hmm, sounds like there might be an Extraordinary Being, about twenty to thirty kilometers from here."
Jiang Bei was taken aback, "So you're really a Kryptonian, huh? You can hear all that?"
What do you think?
