Chapter 10 – Attacked campsite
Sky Eye Association, excavation site camp.
The rumble of the engine was accompanied by the vortex of airflow as the black military helicopter descended in the gale. It landed solidly in the open space between the camp buildings, and two men in black suits opened the cabin door. A middle-aged man wearing a lab coat stepped out, his coat fluttering in the storm caused by the rotor blades.
Wei Chuan, the operations Commissioner on-site, had already been waiting outside the cabin. As the middle-aged man disembarked, he saluted, "Professor Fang."
Professor Fang patted him on the shoulder and smiled, "Almost lost my life on that darn plane. After this job, I need to have a good drink."
"Of course. There's a pretty good barbecue place seven kilometers away," Wei Chuan said with a smile, "My treat."
"I'm looking forward to it."
As Professor Fang spoke, he had already started walking side by side with Wei Chuan, and two commissioners from the helicopter, carrying metal cases fitted with equipment, followed them.
"Let's talk about work first." Professor Fang asked as they walked, "The new finding from yesterday? What kind of tests have you conducted?"
"Regular indices, radiation value is normal, uncontrollable index is stable," Wei Chuan briefly replied, "We preliminarily judged that the danger level is under one, and it's a controllable object."
"That sounds like an easy task, like a game of golf," Professor Fang joked, "Maybe we won't have to wait too long for the barbecue."
The two men passed through the tents and arrived at the temporary containment site. The newly discovered object was lying quietly in the middle of the square glass container. It didn't seem dangerous, and instead reminded one of an exhibit in a museum.
It was a rock.
At least, that's what it looked like from the outside. Upon closer inspection, its shape might be considered unusual, the irregular outline might stand out among other rocks, but a passerby would probably still kick it away.
Professor Fang leaned closer to the outside of the glass, held his breath, and observed for a moment.
"The texture is unique," he said, "It has similarities to the OCE series objects."
Wei Chuan stood behind him, arms crossed, "A professional observation, Professor. One of our surveyors said the same thing."
The professor signaled the commissioner behind him to hand over his case. He opened the buckle, took out a scanning device, and started it up. Holding it in his hand, he pointed it at the rock behind the glass, circling the container twice.
He stared at the readings for a moment, furrowing his brows, and fell silent for a long while without speaking.
"Is something wrong, Professor?" Wei Chuan asked.
Professor Fang didn't answer. He measured several more times, then asked another commissioner for another device. He set up a tripod on the ground and mounted a device with a base for measurements, rapidly operating on the simple console.
"No, this can't be," he murmured to himself, "But if it's true..."
"What are you saying, Professor?" Wei Chuan frowned.
Professor Fang seemed to wake from a trance and suddenly stood up.
"What's the current alert level of the camp? How many Extraordinary Beings are present?"
"Level three... just me. What's wrong, Professor?"
"Immediately contact the Sky Eye Association, we need to increase the alert level, dispatch more Extraordinary Beings until the object is ready for containment. This thing is not as simple as we thought, it could be..."
Professor Fang didn't get to finish his sentence when a sudden alarm echoed throughout the camp. All the speakers were screaming hysterically, everyone reflexively tensed up.
There were intruders.
Such occurrences were not common; not many lunatics specifically sought trouble with the Sky Eye Association. Under normal circumstances, they were the hunters.
But all the commissioners had received the most professional training. Even if they weren't Extraordinary Beings, they were always ready for combat. Everyone came out to see the camp that seemed quietly asleep under the newly arrived night, suddenly lit up, as if jolted awake by the alarm.
All the lights were automatically turned on when the alert was triggered, the cross-covered lighting dispelled the shadows in every corner. Even a bee that strayed into the area couldn't escape the piercing surveillance cameras.
Gunshots echoed within the camp.
"Exchange of fire at the southwest corner," came a voice from the communication channel, "The enemy has armed firepower!"
Wei Chuan immediately walked out, saying to Professor Fang before he left, "Stay here."
As soon as he finished speaking, he was out the door, leaping up to the top of the camp buildings. His gaze traveled over the stretch of roofs, seeing the flickering muzzle flashes in the southwest corner from a distance.
As he had just said, the camp's current alert level was only level three, and he was the only Extraordinary Being arranged under this level. Although the rest were professionals fully armed, they inevitably lacked abilities.
The primary responsibility for camp security fell on him.
Wei Chuan was preparing to provide support when he suddenly felt a surge of wind behind him. Without hesitation, he turned around, drawing his blade almost instinctively.
The blade flashed out of its sheath, sending out a crescent-shaped blade of wind.
It wasn't just a rhetorical exaggeration, but a display of his abilities. Wei Chuan was an Extraordinary Being who controlled wind elements, and one of the mainstream applications of wind-based powers was the specialization in "slicing." This was exactly what Wei Chuan had mastered, combining the will to cut with the blade of wind, turning it into a blade capable of cutting through steel.
But he didn't hit anything.
A man dressed in a black combat suit appeared behind Wei Chuan. He nimbly dodged the attack, and the sharp gust left a shallow scratch on his arm.
"Worthy of a Sky Eye Commissioner, your vigilance is indeed extraordinary," the man praised.
He was an Extraordinary Being from the Prayer Meeting, code-named "Shadow."
The sequence of the Sky Eye's Extraordinary Commissioners was not necessarily high, but their experience and awareness were definitely not second-class. If it were an ordinary person, even a higher sequence Extraordinary Being might have already been taken down by his surprise attack.
Wei Chuan didn't waste words, he immediately swung his blade again.
The identity and details of the enemy were important, of course, but that was for later interrogation. Right now, the most important thing was to control the situation; he knew how to prioritize.
He swung an incredibly fierce strike, as if all the wind spirits in the entire space were swirling around his blade. The slicing wind blade made his sword irresistible, its speed nearly invisible.
Shadow also drew his blades, a pair of short swords. He skillfully dodged the wind blade, using his short sword to strike and deflect Wei Chuan's sword, while the blade of his other hand stabbed directly forward.
After a single clash, Wei Chuan was certain, this man was also an Extraordinary Being.
The force coming from that short sword was not something an ordinary human could possess.
The two of them fought with speed, their long and short swords clashing with metallic clinks. The blurred figures of the two crossed and struck, falling from the roof while fighting, reminiscent of martial artists from old dramas who could perform lightness skills. The air echoed with the buzzing sound of metal.
With a crisp sound, Shadow's short sword in his right hand shattered, half of the broken blade spinning away into the distance.
He switched swords to his right hand, stepping back twice while deflecting with his remaining sword, until even that blade was sliced into two pieces. The raging wind seemed to wrap around dozens, if not hundreds of whip-like streams embedded with blades, lunging towards him.
He got him.
For a moment, that thought indeed crossed Wei Chuan's mind. He was even almost ready to confidently turn around, take out the enemy with one strike, and then rush to support his teammates.
But he didn't feel the feedback of a successful hit.
Just as his wind blade was about to strike, Shadow showed an ambiguous smile at the corner of his mouth.
Then he disappeared.
Yes, just as if he had evaporated into thin air. The raging wind blade passed through the spot where he had just been standing, leaving seven or eight cuts on the ground.
Wei Chuan was taken aback. The next second he felt a chill on his back, instinctively turning around to block with his sword. Shadow emerged from the shadow cast by the light behind him, a brand new spare short sword thrusting straight towards him.
Clang!
The collision of metal under tremendous force sparked a large amount of sparks. Wei Chuan was pushed back several steps, squinting his eyes.
An Extraordinary Being who could use shadows to move...
"Good vigilance."
Shadow didn't want to prolong the fight either. He quickly retreated after touching, chuckling lightly.
Wei Chuan's pupils contracted as he saw the object Shadow was clutching in his hand.

It was that stone, the containment object in this camp.
Professor Fang's words were not finished just now, but just half of it was enough for him to realize that this containment object might not be so simple.
And it was clear that the enemy had come specifically for it.
He was the only Extraordinary Commissioner present, thus this item became his responsibility. He had to prevent it from falling into the enemy's hands at all costs.
However, before he could launch his next attack, he saw that all the patterns on the stone in Shadow's hand had lit up. A bizarre deep blue luminescence enveloped it entirely, appearing like interlaced LED lights in the darkness.
In the next moment, it disappeared from Shadow's hand out of nowhere.
Wei Chuan was startled and asked in a deep voice, "What did you do?"
Shadow burst into laughter. "Seems like you guys truly have no clue about what this is..."
Wei Chuan squinted his eyes, silently drawing his sword. Now, no matter what, he had to capture this man. The answers to many questions would have to be pried out of this person's mouth.
However, just as he was preparing to charge with his sword once more, a massive shadow had already sprung up from the ground.
A quake-like disturbance, a crack rapidly spreading. The earth exaggeratedly split apart, and a huge shadow broke through the soil right in front of Wei Chuan.
A gigantic monster, covered in brown-black fur, with horns like that of a bull, a fierce face, and sharp tusks at the corners of its mouth. Just the commotion from its emergence stirred up a cloud of dust.
A Cunning Beast.
What do you think?
