Chapter 58 - 58 Exhausted
Chapter 58: Chapter 58 Exhausted
Zhang Guihua looked at her two lively grandsons with motherly affection, gently stroking the heads of the children. “Stop fussing, stop fussing. When has grandma ever failed to make new clothes for you two?”
In the second household, several girls leaned against the window, their faces full of envy as they watched the two boys in the courtyard.
They had never worn new clothes from the time they were little.
Because the family wasn’t wealthy, it was generally the adults who wore new clothes, which after a few years were altered for the children, and as they outgrew them, the clothes were passed down to younger ones, and so on and so forth.
With each passing, the patches increased, and the colors faded; by the time the clothes reached them, the original patterns were no longer recognizable, just a gray smeared patch…
Thus, other than Jiang Changhai making an effort to get Jiang Mianmian new clothes every year, only the two boys had new clothes to wear; the girls could only look on with longing each time.
“Alas, even getting San Ya a new piece of clothing is so difficult, we might as well forget about it. Not to mention cloth tickets, there’s no way grandma would give us money,” one of the girls lamented.
“Yeah, I’m really envious of them,” another agreed.
Sun Lixia’s eyes widened with dissatisfaction. “Mom, Zhiwen and Zhiwu will carry on the family line in the future, so you can’t be biased!”
“You wish! San Ya got new clothes only because Eldest procured cloth tickets. If you’re capable, go up the mountain and hunt some game to exchange for cloth tickets. Then you can come back and nag me!” Zhang Guihua cursed and slammed the cupboard shut.
Sun Lixia was instantly at a loss for words; as a woman, not to mention hunting game, just climbing up the mountain was exhausting enough.
As for her husband, she couldn’t bear the thought of him undertaking such a dangerous task! What if he was bitten by a venomous snake or insect while on the mountain? It would be a severe loss if the pillar of the household were to fall, for not everyone had Eldest’s abilities.
But she was determined not to give up on getting new clothes, so she dabbed at her eyes, feigning pity: “It’s my fault for being a useless mother who can’t acquire cloth tickets. But mom, look at the clothes on Zhiwen and Zhiwu, they’re full of patches. Many classmates mock them behind their backs.”
“Grandma, so many of our classmates are wearing new clothes!” the two boys gazed at the old lady with eyes brimming with longing, which melted her heart.
“Alright, alright, when the new year comes they’ll issue tickets and you’ll each get one new piece,” she conceded.
The two boys cheered immediately, sweetly saying, “Grandma is the best, we’ll definitely take good care of you when we grow up!”
Encircled by her two grandsons, who would carry on the family line, Zhang Guihua felt as sweet as honey in her heart. “Okay, grandma is waiting, but for now, let’s eat.”
With this, Sun Lixia finally curled her lips in satisfaction. Even if that lazy girl San Ya was smart and good at studying, what of it? The grandmother’s favorites were still her two sons!

At the dinner table, Jiang Mianmian, veering from her usual behavior, stopped after eating just one bowl of rice: “I’m full.”
She had eaten a large meat bun on the way, and today’s meal was just radish stewed with cabbage, without a trace of oil, making her lose her appetite after just a few bites. @@novelbin@@
Jiang Changhai and Su Wanyu didn’t stay at the table for long before returning to their room, leaving everyone else baffled.
Zhang Guihua sipped her corn porridge and wondered aloud, “The sun must’ve risen from the west today. Eldest’s family isn’t rushing to eat.”
Sun Lixia snorted disdainfully and said sarcastically, “They hunted game on the mountain and didn’t share a bite with us, so now they don’t care for our plain food.”
Zhao Xiaojuan, the second household’s daughter-in-law, tried to mediate: “That’s because Eldest is skilled on his own, and besides, all the game was traded for cloth tickets.”
What do you think?
