Chapter 18: Drunken Stayover
Elia and her husband did not explicitly state the real reason for Cecil’s arrival. Perhaps they didn’t want to alert anyone, so they merely claimed he was staying temporarily for a few days.
But in truth, most people were well aware of the situation—except… Yu Li.
As the neighbor, she had to play dumb and pretend she knew nothing. After all, being possessed by a ghost sounded like a joke. To the protagonist group, she was just a simple, kind-hearted neighbor. How could they possibly believe in ghosts…
—Unless they saw one with their own eyes.
At the dining table, Yu Li smiled as she accepted the wine Jiang Xi handed her, discreetly pouring herself a few extra glasses when no one was looking.
After a few drinks, her gaze turned hazy and unfocused. Seeing this, Jiang Xi quickly reached out to steady her, her tone filled with concern. “Miss Filia, you’re already drunk.”
“Hmm?”
Yu Li narrowed her eyes slightly, letting out a soft hum of confusion. A rosy flush of intoxication tinged her delicate features, and her blue eyes shimmered with moisture, alluring and seductive. Her lips curled into a lazy smile as she giggled softly, “Sorry, darling, I might have… had a little too much to drink?”
She pressed her fingers against her temple and wobbled unsteadily as she stood up, nearly losing her balance after just a couple of steps. Fortunately, Jiang Xi reacted quickly and caught her, sighing, “Miss Filia, I don’t think you can go back like this.”
“My fault, I didn’t realize you had already drunk so much.”Hearing this, Yu Li blinked and broke into a wide, cheerful grin, her voice soft and playful. “Darling Elia! Don’t worry about me! I know this place very well! I’ll definitely make it to the lake!”
Jiang Xi: “……” Her words were already a mess.
Now Jiang Xi was even more worried.
Across the table, Da Dong watched the intoxicated woman with dark, contemptuous eyes, the corner of his lips curling in disdain.
If she got drunk and drowned in the water, all the better. After all, that woman was still waiting for her down there, and her hatred ran even deeper than his.
That would be one less obstacle.
Young Master had forbidden him from scaring this foreign woman and even ordered him to kill this entire family.
Even Da Dong had been speechless at this request, but he had no choice but to comply.
His gaze flickered toward the priest sitting across from him. After a brief moment of thought, he suddenly spoke up, “Why not let Mr. Cecil escort Miss Filia back?”
That way, he could seize the opportunity to eliminate this family while ensuring the foreign woman remained unharmed.
A perfect plan—killing two birds with one stone.
Da Dong thought it was a brilliant idea.
But the moment he spoke, everyone’s eyes snapped toward him, and an eerie silence fell over the room.
Only Yu Li chuckled softly. “Wouldn’t that be a little inappropriate? I’m still very sober.”
Not only that, but a menacing presence crept up Da Dong’s neck, as if someone else strongly objected to his suggestion.
Da Dong: “……” Fine, I get it.
He had almost forgotten how much Young Master valued this foreign woman.
After a brief, strange silence, everyone seemed to come to a mutual understanding.
“Let’s have Miss Filia rest upstairs for now.”
In any case, she couldn’t leave.
They couldn’t let that ghost have its way.
Da Dong could clearly sense the odd atmosphere surrounding this family lately. Coupled with the priest’s sudden arrival, his fists clenched tightly.
It was time to act.
—
After settling Yu Li into a room, the previously lively living room fell into an unsettling stillness.
Jiang Xi had just started descending the stairs when—
Snap.
The entire living room was swallowed in darkness.
An inexplicable, intense sense of danger surged through the air.
From his seat, Jodie shot up in alarm. “Mom!”
Jiang Xi immediately responded, “I’m here. Don’t worry, Jodie. Don’t move.”
Hou Liang clutched Joeger tightly, his voice tense. “Cecil! Are you there?”
In the darkness, a single candle was lit, casting flickering shadows.
“This is the work of an evil spirit.”
Cecil stood still, holding the candle, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.
Sure enough, Joeci—who had been seated just moments ago—was now nowhere to be seen.
Frowning, Cecil raised his voice. “Stay alert, everyone.”
He hadn’t expected this ghost to be capable of such a feat. Normally, when possessing a human body, a spirit’s power would weaken significantly. It shouldn’t have been able to do something on this scale.
But fortunately, he had prepared for this possibility.
Cecil lit several more candles and spoke solemnly. “I don’t know what you intend to do with Joeci’s body, but if you keep this up, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
A soft chuckle echoed in the air.
A voice that was both youthful and eerie, neither distinctly male nor female, seemed to come from nowhere:
“You’re all not getting out of here~”
The chilling tone sent a shiver down everyone’s spine.
Jiang Xi pressed her lips together and carefully moved to grip the staircase railing, preparing to descend cautiously.
But suddenly—
A pair of hands shoved her from behind.
The force was immense, far too fast for her to react.
“Ah—!”
Jiang Xi’s pupils contracted as she let out a cry, tumbling down the stairs. A sharp crack echoed as she crashed onto the ground.
A wave of pain coursed through her entire body.
Her forehead struck a sharp corner, and a sticky warmth trickled down her cheek. Face pale, Jiang Xi let out a muffled groan and squinted toward the staircase.
In the dim candlelight, she could barely make out a ghostly white figure—
And… that unmistakable head of green hair.
Hearing the noise, the others rushed over instantly. Hou Liang held her up, pressing a towel to her bleeding forehead.
Jodie and Joeger hovered anxiously. “Are you okay, Mom?”
Forcing a smile despite her pallor, Jiang Xi reassured them, “Don’t worry. Mom is fine.”
Standing at the base of the staircase, Cecil lifted his gaze toward the green-haired girl above.
No—at this point, it could hardly be called a girl anymore.
Her pitch-black eyes, bloodless face sunken in places, and crimson trickling from every orifice—she was only in her teens, yet her skin was like that of an aged corpse.
Every now and then, flashes of a man’s twisted, hateful face flickered over hers…
—A grotesque fusion of male and female, neither one nor the other.
Her brittle green hair whipped through the air like the writhing tendrils of a monster.
Then, with a sickening crack, her head twisted unnaturally to a ninety-degree angle.
Her dark pupils locked onto them, filled with malice.
She let out a chilling, raspy laugh.
“You’ve figured it out.”
Cecil’s expression darkened. He cursed under his breath. “Damn it.”
Clearly, this thing had no intention of letting them go.
Without hesitation, he grabbed his bag from the sofa, pulling out a cross and a scripture book.
Holding the cross up, he began chanting.
Da Dong’s face darkened as his gaze swept toward a vase on a nearby cabinet.
A moment later, the vase hurtled toward Cecil.
But Cecil’s reflexes were sharp—he dodged with ease, rolling to his feet while continuing his incantation. His ancient scripture recitations reverberated through the pitch-black night.
While different regions had their own methods for dealing with ghosts, Da Dong had spent enough time abroad that his yin energy had been influenced by the local environment.
That meant these scriptures could still harm him.
Even though the power Young Master had given him was strong, it had its limits.
As he felt his soul wavering slightly, Da Dong’s expression soured.
If he couldn’t beat this priest, he’d simply target someone else.
His gaze flickered toward Jodie, who stood trembling in fear.
A sinister glint flashed in his eyes.
The chairs at the dining table began to tremble and shift, while the kitchen utensils clattered uncontrollably.
Cecil’s face darkened.
Not good!
“Watch your back!” he shouted.
But it was too late.
As Hou Liang turned his head, he caught a fleeting glimpse of a white light—before a sharp knife, seemingly controlled by an unseen force, shot straight toward his heart!
【Holy sh*t! Hou Liang, don’t die!】
【Is this a total wipeout? No way!!】
【Is the protagonist about to sacrifice himself for the plot?!】
Hou Liang instinctively wanted to dodge, but he was still holding Jiang Xi in his arms. His pupils contracted as he forced himself to twist slightly, taking the blade to his arm instead.
The knife stabbed deep into his flesh before being violently yanked out.
Blood gushed instantly.
Hou Liang’s expression changed drastically as cold sweat beaded on his forehead. He reached out to grab the blade, but the overwhelming force controlling it was too strong—the sharp edge inched closer and closer to his heart.
“Dad!”
Jodie’s face twisted in horror as she reached for the floating knife handle.
“Don’t touch it, Jodie!!”
Cecil’s voice rang out in alarm.
He swiftly raised his cross and began chanting. In an instant, the knife clattered to the ground with a metallic clang.
Hou Liang collapsed, his body drained of all strength. His injured arm hung limply at his side, sweat dripping down his forehead.
The knife was neutralized—but Joeci, who had been standing on the stairs, was nowhere to be seen.
Cecil scanned the room, but the figure was completely gone. A realization struck him, and his expression changed.
“Filia!!”
He took a step toward the stairs, but concern flickered in his eyes as he glanced back at the injured Jiang Xi and the others.
After a moment of deliberation, he retrieved a vial of holy water from his bag and poured a protective circle on the ground. His voice was grave as he looked down at Jodie.
“Jodie, no matter what happens, do not leave this circle. If someone speaks to you, ignore it. Understand?”
Jodie’s eyes were red with tears, but she nodded firmly. “Okay, I understand.”
“I’ll be back soon. Call the police and the hospital. Take care of your mom and dad.”
Cecil handed her his phone, patted her head, and hurried upstairs.
What do you think?
