Chapter 66: Soak the cake in hot water
Fierce Tiger Team members: “…” Damn it, I so want to beat them to death.
The two squads were engaged in a head-to-head battle, while the other teams silently sipped their soup.
Their soup wasn’t pure like that of Fierce Tiger Team, and it didn’t have as much meat as Cheetah Team’s.
They were somewhere in between.
They all knew for sure that Xu Jiaoqin must have gone to give gifts, and not just small ones at that.
Last time too, a squad leader gave a big gift to Brother Zhao, and then while other teams drank plain water, his team feasted on stir-fried pancake strips.
Before, they were resentful seeing how much meat Cheetah Team had in their bowl, but after they saw Fierce Tiger Team’s bowl, they instantly felt balanced.
This wasn’t too bad for them.
Taking a sip of hot soup, munching on a fish cake, watching a lively scene—life was still pretty good.
Hu Dashan’s face looked like an overturned palette of paint, so hideously ugly. His fists clenched, but he didn’t make a move.
The base had its rules. Personal grudges were to be dealt with privately, but they must not interfere with the affairs of the base.
Especially not during mealtimes.
Nothing is more important than eating.
If he dared to start a fight while everyone was eating, it wouldn’t just be the base leadership he’d have to worry about—the remaining Superpower Users would drown him in spit.
Hu Dashan could only swallow his anger, planning to settle the score after the meal.
But that bitch Xu Jiaoqin, as soon as she finished eating, ran off to “exchange thoughts” with Brother Zhao. In front of Brother Zhao, Hu Dashan didn’t dare to lay a finger on her.
Exchange thoughts?
He spat in disgust.
Hu Dashan walked away, cursing under his breath.
Brother Zhao looked at Xu Jiaoqin with a face full of satisfaction, telling Captain Xu to bring him good stuff like tea leaves first thing when she found any.
His words were soothing to hear.
“Jiao Jiao, you’re getting more and more cunning at deceiving people,” Yun Wujiu said with a smile in his eyes watching Brother Zhao whistle away and then looking at Xu Jiaoqin.
Xu Jiaoqin shuddered. Jiao Jiao? What the hell kind of nickname was that?
“Don’t call me that,” Xu Jiaoqin said irritably, pushing him away.
She had truly worked her heart out for Cheetah Team.
These people just ate all day long; without her, the team would have fallen apart.
“Alright then. Captain Xu, let’s go trap Hu Dashan in a sack later,” Yun Wujiu said, pulling out a damp, yellow sack that clearly had been fished out of water that day.
He had been too busy before and let Hu Dashan off easy for a while, but tonight they could go and help ‘digest’ the meal.
“You do nothing productive all day, just busy fishing out sacks,” Xu Jiaoqin commented, examining the large and sturdy sack.
Yun Wujiu: “So are you coming or not?”
“Coming.”
What was meant to be an activity for two soon attracted the other team members when they heard about the mischief; a large group of them set off in high spirits, unconcerned about being discovered.
Well, actually, they weren’t afraid of getting caught.
They would deny everything to the death anyway.
Everyone went except for Liu Wutong. She had originally wanted to join them, but she was worried about her younger sister and mother.
It had been several days since she last visited home, and she calculated that their food supply would be running low.
She needed to take them some.
She hadn’t eaten all the fish cakes she had gotten tonight and deliberately left two, one for her sister and one for her mother. Made from fish mixed with a pasty substance, the fish cakes were fishy due to the high fish content, yet they were considered a rare delicacy at this time.
There was also a piece of meat with some fat on it, lean and tough; she was afraid her sister wouldn’t be able to chew it.
In addition to these, she had saved a bit of cake, which she had scrimped and saved from the rations distributed to them, the Specialpower Users on task. Plus, there were items she had gleaned and then traded with other Superpower Users for food.
She had saved up for a few days, enough for her sister and mother to eat for four or five days.
The Superpower Users on task all lived together in a cave, which was the nearest to the foot of the mountain, making it convenient for them to go out and forage.
Wang Huifang and Liu Piaoxu’s cave was a bit higher up, a little further away. Foraging was hard work that required rest, so Liu Wutong wouldn’t go back often.
She was too tired; each time she returned, she was completely drained, and even if she was worried about her sister and mother, she couldn’t go up there frequently.
Liu Wutong held the food tightly in her embrace, protecting it from getting soaked by the rain.
She had protected it well; as she ran all the way there, the fish cakes were still slightly warm.
Her sister would definitely be very happy.
A smile appeared on Liu Wutong’s face.
She had thought about how delighted her sister would be to see her bring food home, but she hadn’t expected to find her sister lying weakly in their mother’s arms.
Liu Piaoxu’s eyes lit up when she saw her sister return, wanting to get up and greet her, but she was so weak she couldn’t even stand.
Wang Huifang, seeing her eldest daughter return, was overjoyed and hastily left Liu Piaoxu to rush over and ask,
“Wutong, the food, did you bring any food back?” Tears fell as Wang Huifang virtually clawed at Liu Wutong in her anxiety.
“Mom, what’s wrong with Piaoxu?” Liu Wutong took out the food she had brought back.
Wang Huifang grabbed some cake, dipped it in hot water, and then carefully helped Liu Piaoxu eat it.
After Liu Piaoxu had finished a bowl of hot water and half a cake, there was finally time to respond to Liu Wutong’s question.
“She’s hungry,” Wang Huifang said, wiping the tears from her face, her heart aching.
“Hungry? I left enough food last time,” Liu Wutong said tenderly, touching Liu Piaoxu who was nibbling on the cake.
“Well… It wasn’t enough,” Wang Huifang said guiltily. She had indeed left enough food for two, but Sister Gu had come begging for help. Wang Huifang, seeing Sister Gu’s pitiful tears, had given her some of the food, and then there wasn’t enough left.
Wang Huifang dared not tell Liu Wutong this.
Her daughter was grown up and had a temper now.
Liu Wutong frowned, “It’s my fault, I forgot that Piaoxu has grown into a young lady and her appetite has increased. I’ll bring more next time. What I brought this time… should last for three days.” It was supposed to last five days, but now it was not enough.
“That’s not the issue,” Liu Piaoxu snuggled into her sister’s embrace, complaining, “Gu Honghua has come to our home several times.” Liu Piaoxu didn’t directly say how much Gu Honghua had taken.
But Liu Wutong understood when she heard her words.
“Mom! Can you stay away from Gu Honghua,” Liu Wutong said, hugging her sister and frowning at Wang Huifang.
“Don’t talk nonsense!” Wang Huifang disapproved of Liu Wutong’s words, “Sister Gu has helped our family so much, how can we just push her away? You should be grateful.”
Liu Wutong couldn’t help but laugh at her mother’s absurd statement.
Grateful?
This was the apocalypse!
Talking about gratitude in the apocalypse? And to someone like Gu Honghua of all people? Did she think she had too much life to live?
Had she raised her mother to be too naive?
Her mother wasn’t usually so simple-minded and had suffered a lot in the apocalypse. So how could she become so irrational when it came to Gu Honghua?
“Mom, if you want to help Gu Honghua, that’s fine. Just don’t use the food I give you to do it.” Liu Wutong pointed to the food she had brought back, “Do you know how long I’ve saved this up? Do you realize I’ve been soaked every day for this little bit of food? Do you know how much sweet-talking I had to do for the meal servers to get a slightly bigger piece of cake?”
What do you think?
