Chapter 67: Let her be with Gu Honghua.
Chapter 67: Let her be with Gu Honghua.
“Well then… then I won’t eat it anymore, and I’ll give my portion to Sister Gu, okay?” Wang Huifang felt wronged being accused by her daughter like this.
“Mom… you! Are you really trying to piss me off?” Liu Wutong was stunned by her mom’s outrageous statement.
Is this something a person would say?
“Sister Gu has helped us so much…”
“And I’m out there risking my life every day to earn food. Why don’t you think I’m helping you more? If you want to save, why can’t you save the food for me?”
Liu Wutong truly burst into an incredulous laugh, raising her voice a good deal.
It frightened Piaoxu so much that she almost dropped her cake.
Being scolded so harshly by her daughter, Wang Huifang’s lips quivered, and tears streamed down her face, as she murmured, “When daughters grow up, they start to boss their moms around.”
Liu Wutong: “…”
Liu Wutong felt like she couldn’t communicate with her mom anymore, “Come on, sis, I’ll take you to eat something nice.” Liu Wutong picked up Piaoxu and took all the food she had just brought back.
“Mom, I’m taking Piaoxu to stay with me for a few days. Mom, if you can save, then save. I have no objections to you living with Gu Honghua.”
After finishing her words, Liu Wutong walked off, carrying her sister.
Piaoxu obediently clutched her cake, nestled in her sister’s embrace.
“Piaoxu, sis will take you to stay at our place for a few days, is that okay?” After putting some distance between them and the crying Wang Huifang, Liu Wutong finally had a chance to ask Piaoxu what she thought.
“I want to be with sister.” Piaoxu clung tightly to her neck. Their mother was acting crazy, insisting on giving the food to Gu Honghua even though they were still starving.
She wanted to follow her sister.
“Such a good girl.” Liu Wutong patted her head. “The rain’s getting heavier, let’s hurry over so the others can warm you up by the fire.”
With the rain pouring down like this, Liu Wutong shouldn’t have been taking her frail sister out in it, but she really didn’t want to leave Piaoxu with their mother, especially given her character. She just didn’t feel safe.
Her mother was becoming more and more deranged.
The rain wasn’t going to stop for another ten days at least.
So Liu Wutong still decided to take a risk.
After the apocalypse, they had experienced several heavy rains, and getting soaked had become second nature.
It wasn’t so easy to fall ill anymore.
Liu Wutong tried to see the humor in the situation.
Liu Wutong gave the food to Piaoxu, telling her to hold it tight in her embrace, while she herself held her sister snug, and dashed into the rain.
When she got back, everyone was resting, all that could be heard were the sounds of snoring and the crackling of the firewood.
Xu Jiaoqin hadn’t slept, to be precise, none of the Cheetah Team had, as they had just come back from collecting sacks.
They were still full of energy.
So as soon as Liu Wutong returned, Xu Jiaoqin saw her.
Xu Jiaoqin stood up and walked over, frowning at the sight of the two drenched figures.
“Why did you bring your sister back?” Every time, Liu Wutong would come back with food and then return empty-handed. Her sister was always looked after by their mom. What happened this time…
Could it be…
“Did something happen to your mom?” Xu Jiaoqin asked in a low voice.
Liu Wutong put Piaoxu down and wiped the rainwater off her face, then shook her head at Xu Jiaoqin, but after shaking her head, she seemed to remember something and nodded.
“Go warm up by the fire,” Xu Jiaoqin said, patting Piaoxu’s head.
Liu Piaoxu was also soaked, but not as severely as Liu Wutong, who looked like she had been fished out of water. As for Liu Piaoxu, other parts of her were wet, but her embrace was dry.
The thing she held was also dry.
Xu Jiaoqin, having seen what she was holding, fell silent for a moment.
Together, a large and a small one, they huddled next to the fire, shivering as they tried to warm themselves.
Initially appearing as though she was on death’s doorstep, Liu Piaoxu now held food in her hands and was leaning close to the fire, her complexion gaining a hint of rosiness.
She didn’t look as fragile anymore.
Liu Wutong, seeing her sister so fiercely guarding the food, felt a surge of sorrow. She regretted that upon returning, she had been preoccupied with her sister and arguing with their mother—why hadn’t she gone and given Gu Honghua and her idiot son a good beating?
“Piaoxu, eat that piece of meat quickly.” Piaoxu had only nibbled on a cake just before and hadn’t touched the meat.
It was the meat she had specifically saved for her sister.
Liu Wutong took the piece of meat and the two fish cakes from the food Piaoxu was holding tight.
“Eat quickly. It’s really tasty,” Liu Wutong said, swallowing her saliva. After talking so much and carrying her sister such a distance, she was hungry.
Liu Piaoxu looked at the large piece of meat and then at her sister, sensibly bringing the meat to Liu Wutong’s mouth.
“Sister, you eat.”
Liu Wutong bit into it, then pushed the meat back to Liu Piaoxu, “You eat. Sister just ate her fill. And there are these two fish cakes—if you can eat them, do. If not, save them for tomorrow.”
Liu Piaoxu obediently nodded, gnawing on the meat while warming herself by the fire, occasionally glancing at her sister.
Liu Wutong patted her sister, then went over to Xu Jiaoqin to discuss some family matters.
“Your mom really is…”
After hearing the whole story, Xu Jiaoqin shook her head with a look that couldn’t bear to see more.
“So this time, you’re not going to bother about her?” Xu Jiaoqin remembered how much Liu Wutong used to love her mom and her sister. To say she’d stop caring now, could she really bear to do it?
“No choice. I think my mom really wants to be with Gu Honghua, so I’ll let her.” Liu Wutong’s voice carried a certain amount of ruthless indifference when she said this.
“Support.” Wang Huifang survived so long in the apocalypse, largely thanks to having a good daughter.
“She keeps saying Sister Gu is such a good person, right? Then let her go and live with Gu Honghua. I’m actually very curious to see if she’s as good as she claims.” This time, Liu Wutong was determined.
She wanted her mom to learn a lesson, and see for herself whether Gu Honghua was truly that good.
“Alright, go warm up by the fire. Do you still have clothes? If not, I have two pieces here. Get some sleep early, we have work to do tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Captain. I still have clothes.”
When Liu Piaoxu finished eating the meat, Liu Wutong took her to change clothes. These clothes she had fished out a few days ago; they had been drying by the fire for a long time and carried a bit of a musty, moldy smell.
But in their current situation, there was no room to be picky.
Without clothes that fit Piaoxu properly, Liu Wutong could only pick the smaller clothes and then wrapped them tighter with some torn strips of cloth.
After changing clothes, she tucked in to sleep with her.
During sleep, Liu Piaoxu still clutched the food tightly, as if afraid it would disappear upon waking.
Liu Wutong felt a pang of distress, but said nothing; she merely held her sister’s hand tighter, regretting even more not bringing the burlap sack back with them.
Early in the morning, when others were still asleep, Liu Wutong had already gotten up early, and so had Liu Piaoxu.
Taking advantage of this time, Liu Wutong hurriedly instructed her sister to stay by the fire during the day, alongside the person in charge of boiling water and cooking.
There was a person dedicated to tend the fire, boiling water, and preparing their three meals.
“Be sweet-talk a bit, lend a hand when you see her working. If you soften her heart, she might even give you some food. Sister Cui might seem fierce, but don’t be scared of her, she won’t scold without good reason. Be polite and obedient, she likes those who listen,” Liu Wutong conveyed, picking out the most crucial advice for her sister.
What do you think?
