Chapter 68: Climbing up to the supermarket
After chattering away for a while, the others woke up too.
Then Sister Cui served meals on time.
Liu Wutong went to line up with her sister, Piaoxu. Piaoxu wasn’t a Superpower User assigned to the salvage task, so she didn’t have a share in the three meals, but she could still get a bowl of hot water.
The fire was kept burning all day long, and now with the rain pouring down daily, the Water Element Superpower Users provided plenty of water, so there was no real shortage of hot water.
However, while Liu Wutong was lining up, the team leader pulled her out.
“You don’t need to line up anymore, we’re not going salvaging today.” Liu Wutong wasn’t the only one pulled aside; she looked around carefully and realized their entire team had been pulled out.
They were now standing in a secluded corner. Xu Jiaoqin said this while sneakily glancing around.
At Xu Jiaoqin’s words, some of the more impatient ones became anxious.
“Why aren’t we going all of a sudden? Doesn’t that mean we won’t have anything to eat today?” The base didn’t just hand out food for nothing; if you didn’t work, you didn’t get food.
“Do you remember the Galaxy Supermarket we went to before?” Xu Jiaoqin said mysteriously. “This morning, an old acquaintance told me that Galaxy Supermarket has moved to the top of the mountain.”
“Really?” The Cheetah Team was abuzz.
They had all been to the supermarket, and just yesterday, they were thinking about salvaging stuff from the supermarket.
“Captain, can we trust your old acquaintance? Isn’t the supermarket outside of the base? How could it suddenly appear on the mountaintop?”
“He’s trustworthy; we go way back. Even if he weren’t, going to the mountaintop only means we’re delaying the salvage task for one day, no big deal. As for the supermarket suddenly appearing on the mountaintop… it’s not like you haven’t seen the supermarket magically relocate before.” Xu Jiaoqin rolled her eyes.
They were among the first to encounter the supermarket and knew that it was originally far away but had moved next to the base overnight.
“Heh-heh, true that.”
“But we don’t have any gold.”
The excitement fizzled out of those who had been thrilled by that reminder.
That’s right, buying things at the supermarket required gold.
And now they…
They looked at each other, the phrase ‘dirt poor’ described the Cheetah Team perfectly.
“If that were the case, I wouldn’t have called you all out here. My old acquaintance told me that the supermarket now accepts not just gold, but also Crystal Cores.” Xu Jiaoqin took out a handful of Crystal Cores. “We might not have gold, but don’t we have Crystal Cores?”
“Really?!”
Xu Jiaoqin: “For real.”
“Crystal Cores, huh? I’ve got plenty,” said the person who spoke as he pulled out his Crystal Cores, indeed a large quantity, colorful and all of them high-level. “No, I have to dig out the ones I buried in the ground too.”
After saying that, he rushed to dig up the earth where he had hidden them. He had many Crystal Cores, and it was inconvenient to carry so many on his person, so he had hidden some in the ground a few days ago.
The rest followed suit, scrambling to retrieve their stashed Crystal Cores.
Gold was a daily necessity, but Crystal Cores were abundant.
The Cheetah Team accepted tasks frequently and often ventured out to kill zombies. Accumulating little by little, they had gathered a lot of Crystal Cores.
Other than absorbing them themselves for upgrading, Crystal Cores could also be exchanged with others.
But it wasn’t good for a Superpower User to absorb too many Crystal Cores for upgrading, as it could weaken them.
Yet, to exchange all of them wasn’t ideal either. They had Crystal Cores, but did that mean others didn’t?
Only Superpower Users could utilize Crystal Cores; ordinary people couldn’t. But if everyone was a Superpower User, was there really a shortage of a few Crystal Cores?
So, generally, they kept the Crystal Cores for themselves.
The supermarket was a place everyone wanted to visit, and they actively prepared the Crystal Cores they had hidden.
Yet there was still one problem to be solved before they set off.
Everyone wanted to go, leaving no one to watch the house.
They still had a lot of things here, clothes, straw mats, bowls, and chopsticks…
If they all left, they would return to find nothing but remnants.
But the person originally scheduled for guard duty was reluctant to stay behind, as the turns previously determined who would go out scavenging, and now it was not a scavenging trip.
Moreover, he really wanted to go to Galaxy Supermarket.
Liu Wutong volunteered to stay, although she really wanted to take her sister with her to the supermarket. Her sister had just gotten soaked in rain yesterday, and since she wasn’t a Superpower User and had a weak constitution, getting wet again might lead to trouble.
In the end, she also wanted to have another talk with her sister.
“Captain, please shop for me. If… the money from the Crystal Cores is enough, please also buy me a pack of White Rabbit Creamy Candy,” Liu Wutong said while looking at her well-behaved sister, remembering how she acted when she had candy before.
“Sure,” Xu Jiaoqin accepted the Crystal Cores she was handed. Looking at the quantity, it seemed Liu Wutong had given all the Crystal Cores she had saved up.
Xu Jiaoqin and the others left in high spirits, joy written all over their faces, as if they feared others wouldn’t know they were in for some good fortune.
When others came to inquire, they would immediately pretend to be serious and shake their heads, their act was too obvious, but they didn’t seem to realize that anything was amiss.
Liu Wutong, watching from the side, had to cover her face.
Liu Wutong took Liu Piaoxu to get a bowl of hot water, and the two of them heated up the fish cakes from the day before, eating them with the hot water.
Liu Wutong ate quickly and finished in just a few bites.
Liu Piaoxu, on the other hand, savored each small bite, carefully relishing the taste in her mouth, chewing for a long time before swallowing.
After swallowing, she would take a big drink of hot water – with her way of eating, she eventually got full with half a fish cake left over. She carefully wrapped up the leftover cake, seemingly planning to save it for her next meal.
Whether she was full from eating the fish cake or full from the water was hard to say.
Liu Wutong moved her lips, wanting to persuade her, wanting to tell her that the captain had taken Crystal Cores to shop at the supermarket, and once they were done, they would have plenty to eat.
But she didn’t know – she couldn’t be certain how much her low-value Crystal Cores could buy.
Whether it would be enough to buy a pack of instant noodles.
Liu Wutong had saved up quite a few Crystal Cores, but they were all Low-level Crystal Cores.
High-level Crystal Cores were rare, and her superpower was not very strong, making it difficult to kill a high-level Zombie. At most she’d cooperate with teammates, but even then, she wasn’t the one contributing the most, so she ended up with only some low-level Crystal Cores.
So she didn’t dare assure they could get anything in exchange.
If she talked about it now, and then they ended up getting nothing, it would just lead to disappointment for her sister.
So, Liu Wutong said nothing.
Liu Wutong was preoccupied with what the captain’s team might be able to exchange for.
Meanwhile, the captain’s team was struggling to climb the mountain.
“Damn, I’ve never hated living at the bottom of the mountain so much,” complained one of the team members, just as a mouthful of icy rainwater poured in.
“When we went down the mountain to scavenge, you didn’t say that. You were praising the leader for making a wise decision in choosing the closest spot,” another retorted.
“Heh heh, well, the situation’s different now.”
“Holy shit! Look! The supermarket! My god! There really is a supermarket!”
Upon spotting a corner of the supermarket, those who had lost motivation to climb suddenly found renewed energy.
After they crawled into the supermarket, they lay down on the floor expertly. Monkey, in particular, was touching the floor tiles, moved to tears. It was exactly where he had lain last time.
Su Yinhe was startled by their entrance; he had seen people come in soaking wet before, but never anyone who lay on the floor the moment they got in.
He squinted and realized they were familiar faces.
What do you think?
