Chapter 80: Chapter 0080: First Visit to the Lu Family4_1 Chapter 80: Chapter 0080: First Visit to the Lu Family4_1 The table was set with three dishes and a soup, complete with the appetizers Feng Qingxue had brought over for dinner. The table was filled to the brim.

Lu Jiang’s father sat at the head of the table, taking a deep breath. His expression was identical to his son Lu Tianzhi’s.

“The dishes are beautiful, delicious, and fragrant. Now, this is a proper meal for a human. Everything was quite similar to swine food compared to what we have been eating before,” he boldly expressed without the slightest concern that he was critiquing his own culinary skills.

Feng Qingxue barely smiled with her mouth closed.

Lu Jiang poured his father a bowl of wine, and Feng Qingxue promptly handed over the chopsticks.

Although the Lu Family had fallen into hard times, they were not lacking any household utensils, presumably left over from their better days. After all, how could an ordinary person possess chopsticks made from rosewood or wine bowls and plates from the official kilns of the Qing Dynasty?

After having a sip of the wine Feng Qingxue had brought and savouring a couple of peanuts, Lu Jiang’s father spoke: “The people who once raided our home didn’t know the value of what they saw. Thanks to them, these kitchen wares were mostly spared. But the brocade, silk, gold, silver and jewels were quickly snatched away. Just because they didn’t know the value of things didn’t mean they weren’t malicious. Many of our antiques and furniture were destroyed or burned. But among them were also those who were cunning and kept things for personal gain. Just wait and see, someday our treasures will resurface in the world.”

Feng Qingxue agreed with that.

Of course, they destroyed many cultural relics to muddy the waters.

These people hid away the ancient artifacts and paintings they had seized very well, due to which they were able to make a fortune decades later with discreet sales.

Feng Qingxue was very much aware of their trickery because her grandmother had once told her that, decades later, art collections will become a rage and the prices for antiques soaring. The precious artefacts and paintings, which were not all destroyed during the raid on her ancestral home, started appearing in the market. Only then did her grandmother realize that not all their ancient artefacts and paintings were destroyed.

Further investigation revealed those artifacts came from the people who raided their home in the first place.

“The most important thing is that we are alive. In these trying times, no matter how precious an antique or painting, they are nothing compared to the value of life.” Feng Qingxue said, while she used a clean pair of chopsticks to serve food to the two kids as words of comfort.

Lu Jiang nodded in agreement, “That’s well said. Life is the most important. Without it, we would have nothing.”

Lu Jiang’s father was becoming more and more fond of Feng Qingxue, “Lass, they can eat by themselves. You should eat some more. Don’t be shy in your own home.”

Saying that, he truly considered Feng Qingxue as part of the family.

“Uncle Lu, please eat. I’ll not hold back.” responded Feng Qingxue.

Among the dishes was a white stew made from crucian carp. Seeing that, Feng Qingxue didn’t make any porridge separately. Everyone served themselves a bowl of the stew. The soup was so smooth and flavorful that it almost melted on their tongues.

After having their fill, Lu Tianjun took his younger brother out to play, leaving the adults to chat inside.

When Feng Qingxue finished washing the dishes and came back into the room, she saw Lu Jiang’s father presenting her with the meeting and engagement gifts.

When opening the jewelry box, Feng Qingxue was taken aback.

“Uncle Lu, this is too valuable! I can’t possibly accept it.” Every single piece was worth a fortune.

“Ajiang, put the jade bracelet on Qingxue’s wrist.” After Lu Jiang’s father said that, he turned to Feng Qingxue and said, “Dear child, don’t stand on ceremony with your uncle. The jade bracelet is not only a meeting gift but also part of the dowry left by Ajiang’s mother. The gold jewelry is the engagement gift I prepared. Nowadays, traditions like sending a betrothal gift are not considered essential, thus I am giving it to you now. Keep it safe and sound.”
