Bio-engineered Dinosaur in the immortal world

Chapter 46: Stalemate

Wei Long vanished from sight the moment he activated his Bio-engineered camouflage, his form blending seamlessly with the environment.

But just as he made the slightest movement—a subtle shift in his stance—the Empower Lion's golden eyes locked onto his position.

Without hesitation, the lion lunged, its massive paw cutting through the space where Wei Long had been a mere breath ago.

With a sharp twist of his body, Wei Long barely evaded the strike, but as soon as he moved, his camouflage faltered, the illusion shattering like mist under a rising sun. His cover was blown.

The lion's eyes gleamed with predatory brilliance. "You think tricks will work against me?" it growled, its deep voice vibrating in the air.

Without missing a beat, the lion struck again.

Wei Long barely had time to register the attack before the sheer force of the impact sent him skidding across the ground.

Dust and debris exploded into the air as he steadied himself, narrowing his eyes.

"Hah… this is new," Wei Long muttered, wiping the corner of his mouth with the back of his clawed hand. "So you can see through my camouflage when I move?"

His mind worked rapidly.

The Empower Lion had been a mere Mortal Beast when it was napping, but now that it was fully awakened, its senses had reached a level beyond his initial estimations. If he moved even a fraction, the lion could pinpoint him.

However… when he remained perfectly still, the lion hesitated.

Wei Long slowly activated his camouflage again, this time staying as motionless as the ancient trees around him.

The lion's ears flicked. Its tail swayed. But it didn't strike.

A sharp glint flashed in Wei Long's eyes.

"Good," he whispered in his mind. "So long as I don't move… I'm invisible."

A test. He shifted ever so slightly, barely twitching his fingers.

The lion's head snapped toward him immediately.

Wei Long gritted his teeth and barely dodged as the lion swiped, the wind pressure alone sending a chill down his spine. If he hadn't dodged, that hit would've torn his head clean off.

The power behind its strikes was monstrous.

The lion snarled, its muscles rippling with every breath. "You can't fool me. You're here. I can sense you."

Wei Long narrowed his eyes. He couldn't afford to keep dodging indefinitely. His stamina was vast, but not infinite.

The lion, too, would eventually grow weary, but waiting it out was too dangerous.

He needed a strategy—something that would mislead the beast entirely.

A slow smirk curled on Wei Long's lips. "Let's see how sharp your senses really are."

He crouched, staying as still as stone before activating his camouflage once more.

This time, he didn't move—not even a fraction.

The lion sniffed the air, ears twitching as it scanned the area. Its golden eyes flickered with uncertainty.

Then, it attacked again.

A paw slammed into the ground where Wei Long had last been seen, but the attack hit nothing but dirt.

Snarling, the lion lashed out again, this time in another direction. Again, nothing.

The beast let out a low, frustrated growl. "Where did you go?!"

Wei Long remained silent, watching. Observing.

Then, with precise control, he picked up a small stone near his feet.

Keeping his movements slow and careful, he flicked it to the left, making sure to keep himself perfectly still afterward.

Thunk!

The stone landed several meters away, disturbing the grass.

The lion's head snapped toward the noise. It lunged, swiping at the source of the sound, only to find nothing there. Its tail flicked in irritation.

Wei Long smirked. Perfect.

He picked up another rock, this time tossing it in the opposite direction.

The lion growled and charged at the noise once more, only to once again find empty space.

It began to snarl in frustration, its powerful legs kicking up dirt. It wasn't just irritated now—it was angry.

Wei Long, meanwhile, remained motionless in his camouflage, watching with amusement. Let's add a little more fun to this.

Carefully, he reached for a dry tree branch nearby.

With the precision of a master predator, he flicked it toward the opposite side of the clearing, making it rustle against the grass.

The lion spun instantly, its claws slashing through the air, striking nothing but empty ground once again.

Wei Long fought the urge to laugh. He had successfully begun to play the Empower Lion like a fiddle.

The beast, mighty as it was, was now swinging wildly at illusions, its breath coming in sharp pants.

But the real test was yet to come.

Keeping his movements calculated, Wei Long adjusted his position, making sure to remain undetectable.

He grabbed a handful of loose pebbles and, with the flick of his claw like fingers, scattered them in multiple directions at once.

The result was instantaneous.

The lion, hearing multiple noises at once, lost all composure.

It roared, turning and swiping at shadows, its massive frame darting left and right in a fit of confused aggression.

Wei Long, hidden in his perfect stillness, watched the display with unmasked satisfaction.

How long can you keep this up?

The lion's breaths became heavier. Its movements grew less precise.

The constant attacking, the wild bursts of energy—it was exhausting itself.

Wei Long's eyes glowed with predatory hunger. Just a little more.

Another subtle trick. He picked up a dried fruit shell from the ground and flicked it against a tree trunk. The sound echoed.

The lion turned violently in that direction—but its movements suddenly lagged. Its massive body twitched.

Wei Long noticed it instantly. There it is.

The lion's breathing was now ragged. Its limbs trembled slightly. It took a step back—but the moment its foot hit the ground, its entire body froze in place.

Wei Long grinned. Looks like the poison's finally kicking in.

He thought that the toxic scales had no effect on it, but it's just stronger that's why it can resist it. But he is sure the poison effect would not last for long.

The lion attempted to move, but its legs buckled. Its vision swayed.

The once-mighty beast, which had stood so proudly moments ago, was now struggling to even stay on its feet.

Then, with a final shudder, the great Empower Lion knelt.

It was panting heavily.

It was really tiring.

Not long, finally, its legs gave out, and it collapsed onto the ground, panting heavily. The golden fire in its eyes dimmed as exhaustion and poison overtook its body.

Wei Long slowly emerged from the shadows, his camouflage dissipating. His sharp teeth gleamed as he chuckled, stepping toward the weakened lion.

"Well, well… looks like even kings have their limits."

The lion's head jerked toward him, struggling to lift itself. "You… trickster…" it growled weakly.

Wei Long crouched beside it, tilting his head. "Don't feel bad, big guy. You fought well." His claws flexed. "But now, it's time for me to claim my prize."

Just as he prepared to strike, he hesitated.

His eyes narrowed.

Something… felt off.

The lion, despite being poisoned, despite being exhausted, despite kneeling in defeat… still held a fire in its eyes that refused to die.

Wei Long's grin faltered.

Why… does it still feel dangerous?
