Chapter 258 Baiting the skinwalker

"We need to find a safe place. We can't even close the entrance door, if more cryptids appear I'd be force to fight in close combat and I suck at that."

"I agree, does that mean you'll let me go now?" Uriel tried to push her back, only to be caught again by her embrace.

"I've been wondering, are you really an ascended? Your skin is way too soft and you killed all those things by yourself." Charlie reluctantly let go of Uriel and looked at him with suspicious eyes. Uriel's skin was the softest she had ever felt, it was enough to make her feel envy and desire in equal measure, the young archaeology student refused to share his secret.

After the rat thing creatures were defeated there wasn't much to do other than re stocking their ammunition and barricading themselves but as the night progressed Liv started getting antsy. It wasn't until she started walking in circles that Uriel noticed her strange behavior.

Had she not been with Professor Charlie from the beginning, he would have thought she was being impersonated by a skinwalker but the only time he lost sight of her was during the brief moment where they turned off their lanterns.

Still, she was acting too weird and it was starting to get on his nerves.

"Why don't you sit down? If you keep walking in circles you'll start digging a hole in the ground. We're safe now and all we have to do is wait until morning."

"Why don't you mind your own business?" She scoffed at him.

"Chill girl, he just saved our lives. Why don't you show him some gratitude?" Charlie said with a thousand credit smile. "Speaking of gratitude, you saved my life too. Don't you want to..."

"No!" Uriel replied before she even finished her sentence. Between Nika who was always throwing herself at him, Medusa who had a big crush on him and as if that wasn't enough, there was also Luna who still claimed Uriel was her boyfriend.

She too was acting strange, but up until that point Uriel blamed it on her playful character. The fact that she was flirting with was already weird, but even more weird was the fact that although she was a ranger she didn't look down upon him and listened to his input without second guessing him. Uriel had heard that rangers were an odd bunch, but that was just too weird.

'Why would a Ranger with years of experience even listen to what a first year student has to say? What if one or both of them are being impersonated? No, that would be unlikely. If one of them was a skinwalker it would be trying to get us to fight, but if they both were skinwalkers I'd probably be dead already.'

On one hand there was evidence of the same pattern of behavior exhibited by the skinwalkers Uriel had dealt with in the past, but on the other, he didn't miss how the system said 'all the remaining humans'.

'Was the system hinting me that at least one of them is a shapeshifter or is it just playing with my mind?' As usual, Uriel began overthinking the situation but it didn't take him long to arrive at the conclusion that he actually didn't care as long as he got his promised reward.

That meant two things, he needed to use his abilities to their full in order to keep them both safe until dawn and that, should he fail the mission, he would need to kill whoever survives so they wouldn't out him.

After all, he was an ascended but if people he didn't trust learned about his trait his life would become way too complicated.

However, there was also a third option. If Uriel was able to locate the skinwalker he could have a chance of ending everything without a fight.

"We should go to the watchtower." Uriel proposed with the intention to test his companions. Your next chapter awaits on My Virtual Library Empire

"Yes!" Liv exclaimed as though she won the lottery.

"Why? I don't get it, we're safe in here," Charlie pointed toward the barricade on the entrance and the crates of ammo behind them. "It doesn't make sense, unless... you're one of those things and you're trying to get us to go to a dangerous place."

"I don't have any means to prove I'm not a skinwalker, but the same goes to both of you. But if you're not comfortable going there, then I guess we should simply stay."

"No way, It's obviously safer to go to the watchtower, we'd be able to see cryptids from far away and Miss Charlie will be able to shoot them down from a distance." Liv said.

"Well, you're not wrong, but... there's only one entrance to this place and it's easier to stand our ground here." Charlie was clearly uncomfortable with the idea of exiting the well defended armory.

"You don't think it's a good Idea, because it isn't. Besides, you're both missing the point. I didn't want to go to the watchtower, I wanted to bait the imposter out and it's obviously you, Charlie. While this place has only one entrance, it also has a single exit, if we're overwhelmed by cryptids we're dead meat." Uriel accused while pointing his revolver at the professor.@@novelbin@@

"What!? No! I've been with you guys the whole time, it's not me, I swear. Liv, say something!" Charlie pleaded her case, but she also lifted her rifle and pointed it towards Uriel.

"I- I don't know, we came here together, but we were separated for a long time when you went to scout the surroundings."

"I did no such thing!" Charlie argued.

"I don't trust you, Charlie. You've been acting weird and flirting with me, no professor would act that way towards a student." Uriel said as he sided with Liv, cocking the revolver that was still pointed at Charlie.

"Do it! Kill that thing!" Liv shouted

"I might, but before that," Uriel grabbed Liv's hand and a sense of safety flooded her bringing a smile to her face, only to disappear the moment after.

"You!" Liv shouted.
