Chapter 278 Rooftop battle Part 1
When Uriel asked his friends to wait somewhere else while he spoke to his uncle they complied without even thinking of the possibility that he might be in danger, though it didn't take them long to realize how wrong they had been.@@novelbin@@
As soon as they approached one of the public spaces, Sam noticed something weird about the people in there. They all looked dirty and tired, which wasn't uncommon at all in the slums, but what stood out was that all of them were suffering from anemia, to the point they barely had enough energy to move.
After pointing it out, Luna headed towards one of the inhabitants of that place and asked to perform a medical check, but he only agreed as long as it was performed in his apartment.

They knew something was off, but followed the lead of the man because they deemed him as completely harmless, however, the same couldn't be said about the cryptid already waiting for them in his apartment which resulted in Luna finding out the nature of the unsightly creature, but also on Nika getting wounded.
That's when Nika rushed in to warn Uriel and also, when the problems started for Luna, Medusa and Sam.
They were trapped inside a concrete building surrounded by powerful cryptids and to make matters even worse, they manipulated people into blocking their way forcing them to walk across the long hallways as black tentacles appeared from the apartments.
"At this rate we won't make it!" Sam shouted as he was getting surrounded by pitiful people in such weak state they looked as though a breeze could kill them.
"What do you want me to do? They're using them as human shields." Medusa cried as she was too scared to attack those poor people.
"Follow me." Luna said in a monotone as blood dripped from the orichalcum claws Medusa made for her. She was surrounded by limb and body parts they recognized to be human and there were a few splatters of blood on her face and silvery hair.
For an instant, Medusa was more afraid of Luna than she was of the cryptids lurking in the apartments but the deed had been done and the path to the emergency exit was clear.
"Wait, why are you climbing up? We should go downstairs."
"Uhm, blocked." Luna replied, her drowsy voice and cute appearance contrasted so heavily with her bloodied face and terrible character she was like a demon wearing a human face, but after spending so much time with her they knew it was the same Luna they knew.
"You killed all those people!" Medusa shouted angrily, but only once they were running upstairs.
"It needed to be done, we were just too coward to do it ourselves." Sam defended Luna's actions without stopping his race upstairs, not even when they reached the door that blocked the rooftop causing it to break apart like it was made of paper.
The scenery in front of them was disheartening to say the least. Since the building was embedded into the construction of the wall, half of the rooftop was merged with it and there wasn't really any place where they could run.
The same alloy and concrete wall that protected the city from outside threats now left hem with only two choices, to jump to their immediate deaths or wait for the bitter end on the rooftop.
"What should we do?" Sam asked, desperately scanning their surroundings trying to find a solution that didn't involve using the orichalcum earring to glide away and leave behind his friends.
"Let's wait for Nika, she's a heavenly rank and with her help we'll kill them all." Medusa replied.
"No, that thing almost cut her in half and she was using some sort of armor. I'm a heavenly rank myself and I know I'm no match for those things. Dammit, if only I had brought my weapon." Sam said as the idea of just leaving everyone behind kept repeating itself on his mind.
Thankfully, the first ones to appear out from the rooftop door were Emma, Nika and Uriel but their problems were far from over as they were being followed closely behind by a mass of tentacles and maws that tore through part of the concrete frame that not too long ago held the door in its place.
The changelings weren't the kind of cryptid that would fight face to face and on usual circumstances they would never dare to expose themselves willingly to sunlight, but that didn't mean they weren't able to when needed.
In order to protect their secret, in order to maintain their parasitic way of life they needed to kill the hunters.
Hesitantly at first, the mass of cryptids shyly poked its way out of the crumbling exit, but then it lunged towards the hunters that were gathered in a defensive circle.
Uriel was the first to land a hit, using his longsword Thunderbolt Iron's passive at the same time, but the shock was shared among all the cryptids that were hurdled together and they received little to no damage and Uriel was thrown away with a powerful counter.
Everyone but Emma joined in the battle, but the cryptid's defensive capability was enhanced by the presence of so many of them. The cryptid parried, blocked and countered at the same time and the only thing that kept the formless mass of cryptids from dealing the finishing blow was that they were still getting accustomed to fighting in daylight.
In fact, had it not been for the shade cast by the hulking wall the changelings would have been at a severe disadvantage.
"Sam, use your earring." Uriel said, placing a hand over his friend's shoulder.
"I would never do something like that! I would never abandon you all." Sam blatantly lied trying to put a brave face, but it was useless since everyone present but Emma already knew his true character.
"I'm not asking you to run away, you dumbwit!" Uriel shouted as he pointed towards the top of the wall where the rangers watched over the city.
What do you think?
