Chapter 351 The mystery behind Easter Island

The last time the air spirit people showed up on easter island, the dungeon's security measures activated and the Aku Aku were released. Manu, along with the rest of his people, were all dragged into the cave of the cannibals. In the end, Manu was able to pass the trials and those who died during that period either became Aku Aku or were turned into moais.

Both cryptids, although enemies among them, had the same purpose. To keep the Air spirit from giving birth to a monstrosity. But that left some questions unanswered.

Nothing explained why Manu was able to live for so long, why did they air spirit people were so keen on breeding or why did the one who created the dungeon go as far as to put so many safety measures in place.

To answer those questions, Uriel went along a line of thought that was purely theoretical.

"The story says that the first king wanted to have a child with an angel, but they were unable to do so. This place is a laboratory created with the sole purpose of making it possible, but when it finally happened, they destroyed the offspring. Why didn't they kill the Air spirit people then? Why did they go as far as trapping them in the Alamo?

No, they were able to exit that dungeon with no issues, then why didn't they do it before? How did Water warlock knew exactly were they were headed? He was the one who led us here, but why? Or maybe...

"What if Water warlock is involved in all this? What if 'The first king' and 'Father of many nations' are the same person and 'Dearest one' is the angel in question? Then the threat they faced, the one that forced them into exile was one of their own making and the reason why they didn't kill the Air spirit people and decided to contain them must have something to do with that.

Maybe they were counting on history to repeat itself and for a hero to arise, one strong enough that could defeat the enemy..."

"Who are you talking to?" Manu interrupted Uriel's train of thought, but not without reason. They were still inside the dungeon and time was against them, only Uriel had no clue about it.

"It's just something I do to order my thoughts." Uriel replied.

"We must get moving, if we don't exit this place before it's sealed again, we'll be trapped in here forever, or at least until the birdmen return."

"Alright, lead the way."

"It's not so simple, Conti. You did what you have to do, but you still need to earn the tahonga. Without it, you won't be able to exit the dungeon." Said Manu as he ventured further into the dungeon known as the bellybutton of the world.

Since Uriel took a shortcut, the same one that was meant only for those with the ability to fly, he skipped most of the chambers and their perils and taking the same way back was impossible because he couldn't count on Water warlock's blessing anymore which meant that the first trap he triggered will most likely be the last one. Together, they faced the different cryptids that loitered around in the vast chambers of the underground structure.

Much to Uriel's surprise, Manu wasn't just stronger than he initially thought, he was also way more experienced in battle than him to the point where killing the bug-like creatures took him but a couple minutes and all Uriel could do to support was to fire a couple shots to distract them.

The pigmys posed absolutely no threat whatsoever and since Manu was already familiar with the dungeon, he took Uriel across the less dangerous rooms allowing them to get to the final chamber, though it wasn't what Uriel expected it to be.

Instead of an exit, a ladder or even a gate, what they found was a single altar stone altar surrounded by a few stone statues. Contrary to moais, they didn't look like a cartoonish attempt to depict a human being. They were lively and so detailed, Uriel feared they could be the same living statues he saw before in the cathedral.

"Don't worry, Conti, they're just decorations." Manu sighed and put up a serious face.

"Uhm, okay. What should we do now?" He asked, still scanning the room for an exit.

"Before that, I need you to understand that I'm sorry to do this to you. If there was any other way, I'll certainly avoid it, but..."

It was then, that Uriel realized it wasn't just any sort of altar. It was a sacrificial altar, richly decorated and embellished to contrast with its horrid purpose. Uriel's heart began racing as Manu walked towards him, he couldn't yet decide if he wanted to die or not but that made no difference because without Water warlock's influence, Uriel reacted normally to fear.

He knew he had no chance if it came to a fair fight, but that didn't mean everything was lost. Before Manu could take another step towards him, he pulled out the clay figurine and summoned the jaguar, but the creature was still in the stupor caused by witnessing the gargantuan monstrosity that almost swallowed it not long ago.

Then, Uriel pointed his gun at Manu, who didn't even flinch when the bullet struck him.

"To enter this place you needed to prove you were an adult, do you know why?" Manu asked, but continued speaking without giving Uriel a chance to reply. Instead, he continued walking until he was in front of the altar. Though instead of moving against Uriel, he lied down on the altar after a short prayer Uriel couldn't listen.

"It's because only an adult can receive the sign of authority of our people, the tahonga. It's not just a random requirement, the reason for that is simple... in order to receive this artifact, you need to kill its former owner. You need to kill me."
