Chapter 281: Chapter 281 Setting Out for True Dragon Gully (3)
Compared to the naturally grown crops, the ones she accelerated didn’t have that faint scent of energy.
That seemed normal, after all. Different time spent leads to different results. The ones expedited within a few days lacked the process of drawing in, transforming, and accumulating.
Such fragrant crops, no wonder they would attract animals.
However, this gave her inspiration on how to domesticate wild herbivorous mutant beasts as new livestock.
In the future, she planned to open a large pasture, planting forage all year round with salt licks provided around the perimeter. Over time, she believed that smart herbivorous animals would distinguish between a full meal and constant fullness, and thus decide to stay.
After finishing the day’s work, Ye Nai took a shower, had a meal, studied the map for a while to find the name of the fork that the checkpoint warriors had told her, confirmed it was the route she should take, and then went to sleep.
In the northeast, summer skies lighten around three or four in the morning. Ye Nai set off at this time, taking advantage of the empty highways to make her appearance unnoticed.
It was still raining today, but it was slightly better than yesterday—a light drizzle.
She drove all day, and it drizzled all day.
The turnoff she needed hadn’t come up yet.
Returning to the East Ridge Secret Realm, she picked a basketful of edamame, boiled a pot of spicy five-spice salt water edamame as a snack, had a good night’s sleep, and went out to resume her journey.
The weather had finally stopped raining, but it was still gloomy as if another downpour could start at any time.
Set out at four in the morning, drove straight through until ten, and saw two road signs one after another.
One sign read ‘Changlong Mountain ahead’.
The other read ‘Checkpoint ahead’.
Driving a little further, she finally saw the turn-off, and she took the fork leading to Changlong Mountain.
At the end of the road, the entrance to the mountain and the checkpoint appeared.
She showed her ID, was cleared after verification, was told to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, and was allowed to proceed.
Entering the mountain was a two-lane winding road, but the road was quite wide, big enough for trucks.
Not far ahead was a convoy comprised entirely of military trucks. Ye Nai trailed at the end of the line, unable to see how many vehicles there were. Moreover, the soldiers sitting at the rear of the last truck, holding their guns, aimed directly at her when they saw her getting a bit close.
Ye Nai promptly hit the brakes, keeping a distance of over a hundred meters from the vehicle in front.
As she was driving, she suddenly realized that the vehicle in front hadn’t moved at all. By the time she braked and stopped, there were only about fifty meters separating them. Even if she wanted to back up, she couldn’t, as a military truck convoy had, at some unknown time, also arrived behind her.
Now her fragile RV was sandwiched between two large truck convoys.
Ye Nai happened to be at a turn on the winding mountain road. Apart from the military vehicles in front, she couldn’t see anything ahead and didn’t know how long she would have to wait.
Taking the opportunity, she quickly ate some takeout, her only meal since setting out at four in the morning.
After finishing a boxed lunch with rice and vegetables, the traffic in front remained motionless.
Ye Nai cleaned up the trash, noticed raindrops appearing on the car window, lowered the window to look outside, and saw that light rain was beginning to fall. The rain wasn’t yet heavy enough to wet the glass.
But that was enough for her to not want to wait any longer.
It’s terrifying when it rains in the mountains. If it were only a light rain, it would be fine, but what if a heavy downpour followed? That would be like risking one’s life to drive.
Ye Nai climbed into the back of the RV, put on her mask and raincoat, got out from the back, and in front of the soldiers in the vehicles ahead and behind, collapsed the RV into her Space and then took out a motorcycle. After putting on her helmet and waving to the soldiers, she drove up the empty oncoming lane.
She rode the motorcycle non-stop for two kilometers until she reached the source of the traffic jam.
It turned out to be a landslide.
The road was covered with a large amount of mud, debris, and huge boulders, completely severing it, and vehicles in both directions were tightly blocked.
Fortunately, no cars were buried underneath.
To restore the road, the boulders had to be removed or flipped off the road, and an excavator needed to shovel away the mud as well.
Ye Nai took a look and noticed that the vehicles blocked at both ends of the road were military trucks, which seemed to be the reason for the good order. Everyone was sitting in their cars, waiting for someone from behind to come and deal with the situation.
She rode her motorcycle to a giant stone and, in front of the soldiers inside the military vehicles, turned off the motorcycle’s engine to store it in her Space, then she raised her hands to place them on the boulder. She collected the stone along with the surrounding mud into her Space, and the obstructed road was instantly cleared and became clean, restoring traffic flow.
The drivers blocked at both ends of the road cheered and honked their horns, thanking Ye Nai.
The vehicles going downhill set off first, while the vehicles heading uphill waited a moment longer. Then someone from the passenger seat lowered the window and leaned out to call out to Ye Nai.
“Hey, little sister, where are you headed?”
“To True Dragon Gully.”
“True Dragon Gully? How are you getting there?”
“Border enemy-killing mission.”
The expression of the person in the passenger seat immediately relaxed a lot.
“You won’t make it to True Dragon Gully today. You’ll have to bivouac somewhere on the way, you know?”
“I know, I saw it on the map.”
“Do you have any vehicle other than the motorcycle? It gets cold further up, cold enough to wear a jacket at night.”
“Yep, yep, should you go first or should I?”
“You go ahead. Our convoy isn’t that fast. Just follow this road; when you see a fork in the road and a clear space, that’s it. One goes toward True Dragon Gully, the other up to the mountain peak.”
“Alright, thanks, see you at the camp later.”
Having finished talking, the road was now completely free since the blocked downhill vehicles had all left. She took out her RV, stepped on the gas, and zoomed off quickly.
Spores scouted the path for her and discovered that the vehicles ahead of her were several switchbacks away on the mountain road, probably due to the earlier landslide; vehicles in the back were blocked while the ones in front had luckily escaped.
The distance cleared in the middle became Ye Nai’s shortcut.
Seeing that the rainy weather was making it darker, she certainly didn’t want to be winding on mountain roads after dark. Using the spores to locate, she performed Space Teleportation and jumped up to maintain a distance of two to three hundred meters behind the vehicles ahead.
Thus, finally around 7:30 p.m., she arrived at the wide-open encampment site for bivouacking.
The convoy she had been following also stopped at this campsite.
Just like the soldiers had told her, from here two paths split: one led to True Dragon Gully, her destination; the other to the peak of the mountain.
Many vehicles were parked in the campsite, a military convoy and a private team with seven vehicles, two of which were refrigerated trucks.
They each occupied a corner, not too close to each other, lit bonfires, and each prepared their own meals.
The convoy that Ye Nai had been following was also a military vehicle; the two teams were lined up together.
When they saw a pickup RV with a private Awakener license plate coming up, they all gazed curiously for a few moments but were busy with their own tasks, and no one approached to strike up a conversation.
Driving her vehicle, Ye Nai found herself a spacious corner, still wearing a mask. Just as she got out of the car, she heard a few whistles and, looking in the direction of the sound, saw it was from the only private team.
What do you think?
