Chapter 280: Chapter 280 Setting Out for True Dragon Gully (2)
“No worries, no worries. I’ve started packing at home these past few days. I’ve also spoken to the agent and am just waiting for the documents to come through so I can buy the tickets and leave immediately.”
“Hmm, just bring a few changes of clothes. Don’t take too many things. Sell all the household appliances and furniture second-hand. Once the job transfer is done and the keys are returned, you can go. I’ll transfer some money to you later for buying things in Daijing.”
“No need, no need, I have money on me.”
“I gave money to the twins after their procedures were completed—thirty thousand each. They have theirs, and Yu Jiao, you have yours as well.”
“Alright, thank you, Xiao Nai.”
Ye Nai picked up her phone and, with a few simple taps, transferred one hundred thousand to Yu Qing.
“That’s too much!”
“Not at all. Once you arrive in Daijing, you’ll need to stay at a hotel first. Once you complete the onboarding process and receive your assigned house, you’ll be able to decide whether it needs repainting and cleaning, then you will need to furnish and equip it. This will be enough to keep you busy. The service industry in Daijing is very developed; pay people to do things instead of tiring yourself out. Above all, your most important task is to complete the enrollment procedures for Yu Jiao so that she can join the enhancement class on July first safely and smoothly.”
“Understood. I won’t mess up.”
After waiting a while without receiving further messages from Yu Qing, Ye Nai closed the app and drove back to East Ridge Secret Realm to rest, setting out again early the next morning.
Ye Nai, who could cross a province in three days, took six days to finish those two provinces and finally arrived in Tongjiang Province. The whole journey took eight days, leaving her legs numb from driving.
At the toll station entering Tongjiang Province, Ye Nai was stopped. A warrior sat in the booth, glanced first at the computer screen, then stretched out his hand asking for her ID card.
“First time here? What are you here for?”
“A border eradication mission.”
Ye Nai handed over her ID card, and the other party scanned it on the machine, displaying her name, date of birth, and other basic information. Below, it showed Iron-level Hunter, over fifty thousand points, both task completion rate and credibility score were perfect hundreds, and at the very bottom was an ongoing mission, border eradication.
The warrior registered her entry into the province. He then pulled out a brand-new paper map from a drawer at his feet, handing it over with her ID card.
“Half of our province is frontline, half is rear. You can use city navigation in the rear, but once you enter the frontline area, you must rely on a paper map. Do you know how to read maps?”
“Yes.”
“Good, wish you all the best, and a safe return.”
“Thank you.”
Ye Nai put away her things, drove past the toll station, and then noticed a small clearing on the roadside with a row of simple portable public restrooms, with many large and small vehicles parked.
She pulled over to the side as well but didn’t get out of the car. Instead, she picked up her phone and messaged her family, informing them that she was about to enter the frontline and communication might be cut off at any time, asking them to take care of themselves.
The twins assured everything was fine.
Yesterday, Yu Qing completed all the procedures for the job transition, and the house had been sorted out. Tomorrow, she would depart with Yu Jiao for Daijing.
Ye Nai put down her phone and continued driving.
She drove along the provincial roads for half the day. After it got dark, she returned to East Ridge Secret Realm as usual to rest, studying the paper map to locate her final destination and memorizing the route she would need to take repeatedly in her mind.
Before dawn, she returned to the highway only to find heavy rain, which seemed to have started around midnight. She adjusted the speed of the windshield wipers, but they only barely allowed her to see the road conditions.
After thinking it over, since there was still plenty of time, and safety was paramount, she decided against driving in the rain. Instead, she returned to the East Ridge Secret Realm, released the Courtyard House, took off her clothes, and jumped back into bed for some more sleep.
She slept right through to noon, sweeping away the mental fatigue accumulated from days of continuous driving. After washing up and having lunch, Ye Nai carefully opened the Secret Realm to look outside. Hm, the heavy rain had turned into moderate rain.
Ye Nai sat in her van and cautiously waited for a convoy of vehicles to pass by the road before suddenly appearing. With the screen of rain, the vehicles ahead hadn’t noticed that a van had appeared out of nowhere behind them.
She rolled down the window slightly and sent out some spores to scout the way, especially careful on rainy days to watch for vehicles ahead to avoid collisions and those behind to prevent being rear-ended. Fortunately, her motorhome was equipped with an automatic four-wheel drive system that coped well with the wet and slippery road conditions, maintaining good traction.
She drove on until past four in the afternoon, having seen countless military vehicles speed through the rain. Finally, she spotted a road sign that read, “Check-in required one kilometer ahead at the frontline area.”
Ye Nai focused and drove carefully.
As the checkpoint booth came into view, Ye Nai slowed down and pulled over for the inspection.
The military vehicles accompanying her were also inspected, but they could pass directly after scanning their license plates. Only Ye Nai’s personal vehicle had to stop for a manual inspection.
The process was simple, similar to when she entered Tongjiang Province: roll down the window, present an ID, announce her destination, show her face for the camera in the booth, wait for the other side to register and verify her details, then proceed after being directed where to turn at the fork in the road.
One kilometer past the checkpoint, the vehicle’s navigation system lost its signal and went dead.
Ye Nai turned off the navigation and, recalling the key landmarks memorized from the map, maintained her speed and continued forward.
She drove until dark before returning to the East Ridge Secret Realm, took a short break, and then continued with the farming activities.
Compared to the scheduled reporting time, she had already harvested a round of alfalfa. The corn needed more time, but the soybeans were ready to pick, just in time for the edamame season. Any older and they would become soybeans.
Ye Nai drove a combine harvester, harvesting half the edamame and leaving the rest to mature into soybeans.
The harvester she purchased was quite handy, suitable for harvesting stemmed crops and would be useful for the upcoming corn harvest as well.
She didn’t have to deal with the harvested waste; letting it remain to decompose through the Fungal Mycelium in the soil enhanced the soil’s fertility in preparation for the next sowing cycle.
The only annoyance now was the daily presence of herbivorous animals lingering around the two large plots of farmland.
The defensive line built by the Fungal Mycelium, due to the plentiful supply of food stepping right up to it, grew into a vast and thick fungal carpet in the soil. However, it still couldn’t stop the mutant beasts, which continuously attempted to cross the barrier from dawn till dusk.
The moment they crossed the line, they became fodder for the Fungal Mycelium.
The large gatherings of herbivores naturally attracted carnivores, staging a daily battle of the food chain around the farm.
Ye Nai couldn’t blame the mutant beasts as she too found her own crops to be very appealing.
This allure wasn’t just from the natural fragrance of the crops but also from a faint flow of energy.
The concentration of this energy was very mild, even lower than the energy contained in the leg meat of a mother spider after laying eggs in the East Ridge Secret Realm.
This leg meat, with its low energy concentration, offered less stimulation and was more edible in larger quantities for ordinary people. So, could ordinary people also eat more of these crops?
What if the crops were grains?
What do you think?
